Samurais
12/20/2013 09:34 AM EST
A samurai can be seen fighting Lui Kang in the end of the first MK film 1995. Shang Tsung summons dead warriors to fight off Lui Kang in the final fight in the first film, one of them being a samurai. MK has not included a samurai in any of its game, I mean a pure samurai. Here are some ideas... The silver samurai is probably the coolest samurai ever. A samurai starred as the last boss in Wolverine 2013 film. A samurai also came runnerup in the deadliest warrior.

We can make samurai in a lot of ways, so choosing which type would be the discussion here... we can have a futuristic samurai, that is basically like a tron samurai.

I was thinking since Motara went down quite easily, how it would be good if there was a more powerful Centaur than Motaro. What kind of modified Centaur would u like to see. There are lots of things they can do like make a Two-headed Samurai Centaur with plant manipulation (nature powers) or Earth Powers like Tremor. He can be the sub-boss.

I'm not feeling hotarus samurai look. He looks like a final fantasy character haha. Also li mei is not a samurai she sports a samurai costume. Although I really like that costume over her primary, I will accept that samurai costume. And as I was saying purple and silver looks so elegant in that li mei pic. Definatrly rain should have those colours. I think if they made a female samurai they can get away with li mei look. But if they're making a male samurai then hotatus look won't cut it.it doesn't work for me, it needs to look more samuraiish, with a helmet. The silver samurai looks better than hotarus samurai look.shao Kahn doesn't look like a samurai to me. A samurai wears armour on whole body just not on their shoulders.

Dairou is a Samurai! Seriously, he was based off the concept of being a rogue samurai in DA, and was later included into Deception as a former Seido guard. So, we already have one and don't need another. Make him more of an ex-samirai? If you want, sure, but we don't need more characters to fill classes that are already filled (ninja was already abused for almost 20 years).

I ctrl+F'd "Kenshi" and nothing came up.

Double-you, Tee, Eff.

Hotaru's armor, Li Mei's alt, and Dairou aren't samurai enough for hanky, fine, nothing's good enough for him and he's not aware of what the characters that already exist are supposed to be, which is why he makes these blind, stupid suggestion threads asking for things WE ALREADY HAVE...

...but the guy whose entire character is based around an actual Katana sword, which belonged to his Japanese ancestors, isn't samurai enough that anybody thought to mention him? Why, because he's a modern man who doesn't wear old medieval armor?

Well, if armor is the key to what you're looking for, blacksaibot already pointed out Shao Kahn, and the "only on his shoulders" comment isn't going to fly with anyone because he's also wearing it on his head, waist, arms, and legs. His armor is entirely based on Feudal Era Samurai styles (except in MK9 where they fucked his look all up) whether you think he's not wearing enough of it or not.

Or wait, maybe he doesn't count because he's not from Japan?

Or because he is the lord of his kingdom rather than serving a lord?

Or because he uses a hammer instead of a sword? Samurai used LOTS of weapons, y'know. Hotaru's Naginata is a samurai weapon.

Does it HAVE to be someone who's Japanese AND has the armor AND the sword AND serves a master (Ignoring the fact that Ronin count as samurai too)?

If it has to tick off every fucking box because you're such a perfectionist, hanky, then why not make your own fucking game at that point, or just go play as Mitsurugi in Soul Calibur?
Here's another thought...All of Onaga's mummy soldiers are samurai. They may not be from Japan, but they clearly have the right kind of armor, which they wear over their entire bodies unlike Kahn, they have both katana swords AND spears, and they serve a master. And the REASON Li Mei wears that armored costume is she became one of them.

Why is it that ninjas all sport a similar ninja look but when were taking about samurais they all sport a different look from dairyu to hotaru to live mei to show Kahn. I want a proper samurai with all armour exactly like a samurai. I want the silver samurai to be the costume for any of these idiots hotaru or dairyu, Zhao Kahn is dead so screw him. And a female samurai is not sexy. Don't do it. A female pirate is sexier. Maybe both these threads should be combined.

Because of palette swapping. The ninjas were created when game machines were so primitive that it was necessary to save hard drive space by making one character with their face covered and then just making copies of them with the colors different to create more characters.

But there were no samurai in those games (other than Shao Kahn)because those games were about a hand-to-hand martial arts tournament, and samurai use weapons and armor, not hand-to-hand.

Ever since MK4, the ninjas HAVEN'T dressed the same, now EVERYBODY has their own different costume, which is why all the samurai they introduced look different from one another.
You could try learning to deal with it instead of being a big baby when you don't get your way. Shao Kahn, Kenshi, Hotaru, Dairou, and Li Mei ARE all Samurai, whether you like it or not. There's no need to make more of something we already have 5 of. (Come to think of it, we have 6 because the God of Fire in Mythologies wore full-body samurai armor.)
And whether or not a female samurai is "sexy" has nothing to do with anything. These are fighters, they have personalities and backstories that dictate how they should dress, they're not fashion models with no brains whose only job is to wear what they're told to wear and look pretty like a human Barbie Doll while people snap photos of them. The fact that you treat them as such makes you a shallow person who pays no thought or respect to what the characters' roles actually ARE.

Is it really that hard to spell Liu Kang? LIU KANG!!! The I goes first, then the U!!!

And out of everyone in the first film, I would like to see Art make an appearance rather than ANOTHER samurai. That mofo was awesome, even if he did die to Goro... well technically Shang Tsung since he took his soul.

I'll be happy with one samurai that looks like silver samurai. It needs to be male samurai though. I don't care if there's 5 other samurai in mk. They are not part of mk anymore. They will be if they're included in next mk. So saying my idea is a bad one when we have 5 samurais means nothing because we don't know if any of those will be in next mk.

Kenshi and Shao Kahn were in MK9, what is wrong with the organ in your skull that's supposed to store knowledge and make thoughts happen?

Honestly, because there's a lot about the character that doesn't make me think he's as much a samurai as Dairou;
-origins are both European and Asian;
-descendant to royalty;
-powerful telekinetic, with all of his moves and abilities stemming from those powers;
-his creation being an homage to the "blind swordsman" type hero more than a samurai.
I basically see Kenshi as Ermac and Daredevil combined, and just so happens to have a haunted sword.

1) Yes, Kenshi is of mixed heritage. But since the ancient sword of his ancestors is a Japanese katana, I think it's safe to say the Asian half is the more influential one.
2) The "blind swordsman" archetype IS a kind of samurai. The original that the trope springs from was a Japanese character whose stories are set in the Edo period called Zatoichi.

And not that it's particularly relevant to Kenshi, but Daredevil is a ninja. In his origin story, he learned how to fight and use his super-senses from a member of a clan, and he was at one point at time leader of the Hand. Daredevil is so much a ninja, in fact, that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were originally a Daredevil parody. Eastman and Laird deliberately mimicked the writing and art style of Frank Miller, both sets of characters were created by radioactive ooze that fell off a truck, their master is named Splinter while his is named Stick, he fights the Hand and they fight the Foot...
And historically speaking, ninjas are mostly samurai who traded honor and katanas for guerrilla tactics and peasant weapons, so...

You can argue all that perspective of somebody who knows a thing or two about ninjas, samurai, and all that other stuff, and I'm certain you aren't wrong, but I didn't know any of that, so I didn't think of him as samurai. Heck, when introduced into the series, he and Scorpion shared that "ninja sword" in DA, and he has telekinesis, so I can't think of him as a samurai when he has closer ties to various ninjas in the series. With that being said, the concept of Dairou was brought up as being a rogue samurai in the DA concept art, so that stuck with me too about why I think Dairou's more samurai than Kenshi. It's that simple.

That's not true. They look a little similar, but Kenshi's weapon is longer and curved, while Scorpion's ninja sword is shorter and straight.

The names of the attacks associated with both the Katana and Ninja Sword are the exact same, including button commands and what they do to an opponent during battle. Aesthetically, yes, they look a little different, but that's like saying Scorpion and Cyborg Smoke don't both have spear moves because Smoke's looks like a trident. It's the same thing, just very slightly tweaked because, again, the moves and names of the moves are the same.

When talking about what makes someone a samurai, aesthetics are the most important part.

A katana is a very specific shape, regardless of the fact that the way you fight with it is functionally no different than with any other single-edged longsword.

No. I take it as an insult. Afro Samurai looks like a joke to me. I have suggested far better ideas like Vampire Samurai and Futuristic Samurai and even Silver Samurai.

Heck even this Bug Samurai is better than Afro Samurai
