Just a couple thoughts I had about the inimitable Announcer of Mortal Kombat, without whose voice and exclamations of "FIGHT!" and "FINISH HIM!!" and of course, "FATALITY!" Mortal Kombat would not be half of what it is. First of all, does anyone else miss Steve Ritchie as the Announcer/Shao Kahn?

In the newer games, I don't recall the same feel as in MKII and UMK3 when Ritchie's Kahn/Announcer would yell "Excellent!" "Superb!" "Well Done!" "Outstanding!" or laugh in glee whenever you hit an opponent with an uppercut or a long combo. They should have brought that back in MK9, it was an inseparable part of the MK vibe, at least back in the day.

Secondly, in MK9, the voice of the Announcer sounds very familiar. It sounds, in fact, like whoever is doing it is also the same guy who did the voice for Goro in the first MK movie. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure it's the same guy. Which would be cool if it was.

It's not the same guy who did Goro. Movie Goro was Kevin Michael Richardson.

The MK9 announcer is a lesser known dude named Jamieson Price. He also did Noob Saibot.

Anyway, the way they do the announcer in the modern games bugs the shit out of me.

See, the announcer USED to be the voice of the end boss. Because of the whole "tournament" concept, the end boss was also the guy judging the fights. It was Shang doing the announcing in MK1, Shao Kahn doing the announcing in MK2 and 3, and Quan Chi doing it in MK4. They even brought Steve Ritchie back to do both Kahn and the announcing in Shaolin Monks, which was awesome.
I especially loved how in MK3, if you got beat fighting Kahn, he never said "Shao Kahn wins", he said "I win." That was awesome.

But at some point, they just decided they liked Herman Sanchez's Quan Chi voice so much they said "fuck it, he's the announcer in everything now" so they used the same voice for Deadly Alliance thru MKvsDCU, even when Quan was dead during Deception and voiced by a different guy in vsDCU. Because the announcer is no longer a character in the story, it's just a gameplay element. And that disappoints me.

And here with MK9 they had a chance to go back to the originals and have either Shang or Kahn's VA be the announcer too, but no, they just got some other dude. Lame.

If there's one thing I absolutely hate, it's when people refer to MK4's announcer as Quan Chi. Just because they used the same voice doesn't mean it was Quan Chi; like you said, they just thought his voice rocked. Besides, in MK4, you never hear Quan Chi say, "I Win" like Shao Kahn did in the previous games, so either he's always referred to himself in the third person (he doesn't), or for the first time, they made the announcer a completely independent character because in all honesty, who gives a fuck?

Couldn't agree more Steve Ritchie had an awesome voice. He was the perfect voice for Shao Kahn, and his days as the announcer will be sorely missed. The Mortal Kombat announcers have always sounded cool but none will match Steve Ritchie. If only they brought him back for MK9 like they did with MKSM.

The new announcer actually voices Noob Saibot/Elder Sub Zero. I too thought it was the Goro voice actor from the first movie. Here's the announcer's IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0528936/

Quan Chi's voice in MK4-thru-Armageddon was the single most unique and distinctive sounding one in the entire series, man. The announcer sounding exactly the same cannot be a coincidence.

I know it seems like something to read into, especially since Quan Chi was a big part in the last 4 games before the reboot, but to quote oracle:

Sometimes the most logical explantion is the correct one, and in this case, it's that Quan Chi's voice sounds awesome.

Well I'm gonna continue to go with "Quan Chi announced MK4" on account of every game prior had the main villain calling the "finish him"s and he was the true villain of that game and Shinnok was just a puppet.

The announcer is MK is a huge part of the game. Steve Ritche was the best, no contest. I think Hernan Sanchez did a good job too. This new guy isn't bad, but he just doesn't feel right.

I agree that the announcer should've said more things like "Superb!", "Excellent", or just an evil cackle after landing an uppercut.
