Oh! You know what they should do? They should make a "true canon" Mortal Kombat cartoon movie series! It would start at MK1 (probably MK1-3 like MK9) and go through MK:A. Then they'd start MK9 and so forth. I think this would be for the best since many people are divided over what the actual canon is. I, for one, would just like a definitive, canon retelling of the whole series.
Now this would be THE Mortal Kombat canon, so they would have to make it count. Whatever rivalries, retcons or "laws of the universe" (who can travel to the Netherrealm; is Raiden, or any god, im/mortal while outside the Heavens; etc.) they want to create, they have to start it in MK1 and continue it all the way through. So is Mileena as old as Kitana, or is she a "newborn?" Does Quan Chi already have the amulet and tattoos or not? In the MK9, altered timeline "episode," is Sub Zero a cyborg or not? These are just some of the series continuity issues they will have to establish and KEEP established throughout the whole series. I think this would be a great way for them to tell us the story we've always wanted out of the MK universe. They just haven't been able to deliver that truly great story, even with a universe and characters bursting with potential. Plus, they won't have gameplay to worry about; they can focus solely on the characters and the narrative.
So, what do y'all think? Yay, nay... heyyy!
No trolling, or I'll be forced to have my zombie roommate, Randall, eat your brains! G'day!

Ugly Americans reference compelled to respond.
I would very much like an animated series, or at least an animated movie. Warner Bros. has a great animation team and I wish they would give Mortal Kombat a chance.
And obviously I hope they keep to the canon, and I don't think it would be too hard to combined the elements of the two timelines.
For instance in the old timeline Mileena was thousands of years old and Kitana already knew Khan wasn't her father. The new timeline Mileena was just born and Kitana just discovered Khan wasn't her father. if you combined them than Mileena was born thousands of years ago, but they do the MK legacy thing where Mileena originally looked human, but then lost control and went tarkatan. That way Kitana can discover the truth after seeing her.

Adaptations never stick to the canon. Even MK games can't stick to their own canon, look at MK9 and Shaolin Monks.
The best hope for an accurate adaptation is always comic books, and even then the problem is largely that MK's storyline is so obscure, there's probably no comic writers out there who are both good writers AND know how the games' story goes.
For instance, the script for Shaolin Monks was written by Jim Krueger, the writer of Alex Ross's "Justice" miniseries. And it's not just an inaccurate MK game, it's awful all on its own, the dialogue is horrible and the plot doesn't make any sense.
Another problem is even those of us on the internet who keep an encyclopedic knowledge of MK's storyline argue amongst each other about what is canon and what isn't. If we experts can't agree on what happened, how's an outsider going to figure it out in order to depict it?

That's why I'm saying just create ONE MK canon. After that, everything else (including games) is irrelevant. It would be the definitive canon for the series, the end all and be all.
And who says Boon and the current MK writers couldn't also work on this?

After MK9, who would want them to? It'd be full of plotholes. They've lost their touch.
John Tobias might be the only one worthy of this task, and after all, he already is a comic book writer and artist by trade...though I fear his writing style may be a little too corny and old fashioned, dialogue-wise, for a modern comic.

Don't worry, I'm working on it! My authority is complete and unquestionable.
