We suggest taking a similar approach, and keep Liu Kang as our main protagonist. In fact, we pick up with him like we find Wolverine in the first X-Men movie – fighting for money and purpose. Swap out a bar in Canada for a makeshift fight club, though, as our world is populated with young Turks and quick kicks who have heard of the infamous Outworld tournament, and thus participate in fight clubs around the world to prove themselves worthy of participation in it.
I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but laugh my ass off at this.

I am complete now.

Good read, but the guy's got some wacky ideas, as well as inaccuracies about Kung Lao, from both the game and the film.
It wasn't Kung Lao who died in the first film, it was supposed to be Chow Kang, and for some reason, he was renamed to Chan. Kung Lao's only Liu's brother in the religious sense, as they are both monks. Oi, this guy needs to bone up on his MK history.
Kung Lao: One of the disappointing aspects of the movies is that Kung Lao's role was greatly downplayed. The character died within the first moments of the original film, with his death serving as Liu Kang's motivation for entering the tournament. This time, we'd like to see Kung Lao actually join his brother in kombat. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks proves the franchise is often at its best when these two join forces.

Uggg they keep trying to reboot movie franchises. MK shouldn't be rebooted, it should just feature Sonya & Special Forces, Sub-Zero & Lin Kuei or something like that. We saw Liu Kang's story.

The article writer clearly isn't very familiar with any of what he's talking about if he thinks Kung Lao was the brother in the first flick, or that Liu Kang as a cage fighter with a lover that gets killed would make any sense at all. I really don't know how anyone could ever come up with that idea...maybe he just doesn't know what a monk is?

He may not have known his history 100%, but for the most part I liked his ideas. Having the fighters use their powers, and also to make it more gory. His roster was also really good to.

None of those are HIS idea, though. Everybody wants the characters to use their powers like they're supposed to and have R-rated gory fatalities and be true to the games, and the roster he picked is the exact roster of the MK1 game, except that he forgot Kano, which would screw with Sonya's story.
The only parts of the article that are original ideas he came up with are the BAD ideas and the parts from the first movie and games he couldn't even remember right, like thinking Liu and Kung Lao are brothers. The guy is a goddamn moron and frankly, it's unprofessional of IGN to publish an article so amateur. Journalists, even editorial writers are supposed to do some damn research.
But then, I'm not surprised, IGN's quality and professionalism has never been quite what it should be for the size of their readership.

The ONE THING I would love to see happen is this:
GIVE THE HUMAN CHARACTERS THEIR "SPECIAL POWERS"!!!!
And here's how you'd do that:
Before they enter the tourney, they have a group talk with Raiden. Raiden explains that "as they are" they don't stand a chance against a demon sorcerer and his pals from another realm. SO, as a gift from the gods, Raiden bestows them with powers to compete against such supernatural forces. BUT he explains that he cannot tell them what their powers are or how to use them, and they have to figure that out for themselves (kinds like how real video gamers have to just figure shit out by pushing buttons)...Then as they each compete, they start discovering their special inner strengths pending on how focused they are..."POOF!" that's how you can logically incorperate their powers into a movie!!! This way, they can be more of a "suprising threat" to the bad guys....The problem with the MK movies, is that they pitted normal humans with no powers, to fight angainst supernatural oponnents...That was a bit-o-boring...I want a frickin special effects extravaganza with a great story!!!

In a way I agree. One of the best MK cutscenes was from Shaolin Monks. I felt the intro in MKsm was how the MK movies should have been. Having the heroes vs the villains in an all out brawl in that palace was badass.

Although I did enjoy the intro to Shaolin Monks, don't you think it would be a bit much to have a ton of characters like that? Isn't that where MKA messed up. If you weren't familiar with the characters from the games, you'd find yourself going, "Who that guy?!"..."Oh wait..Who's that guy"...."No, who's that guy?!"...lolol....
They should just start with the original 7 in the first movie, then add a few more, just like MK1 into MK2...In MK2 you got 5 of the originals (which we know the story to), 2 were captured, and only 5 new characters whould have to be explained...In MKA they had a whole slew of MK3 characters who didn't recieve any backstory and probably lost the "un-mortal kombat" audience...
Think about it...let's take the scene with Baraka...in the game he has the very important task of wiping out Liu Kang's temple with his horde of minions, thus reulting in luring Kang to fight in Outworld...In the movie, just to toss him in there, he was nothing more than what?...the guard of Kitana's little cage???!!!!....It would be nice to slowly introduce the characters and give them their due-and-proper...THEN, in the exciting conclusion of the saga, after you've established all of the characters, it would be safe to have an all out chop-em-up brawl like in the intro to MK:SM...
That's my opinion

Well I agree with you. I wanted the ending of the first film to have all of the fighters fight each other. I also would only want the fighters from MKSM, because those are my favorite. My biggest problem with MK movies is that killing characters is tough. So many people have their favorites, and so many people don't want them to die. If they die they probably won't be in the sequel with the exception being Scorpion who would just go to hell and come back.

I'd go with something like this for a roster

Reboot the series featuring the tournament on Shang Tsung's Island but give the audience a sense of how grand it was and don't make the plot focused on just Liu Kang and Shang Tsung, make it an ensamble cast. Movies these days run at about 2 and a half hours and people don't really complain any more about the length of it. You have seven characters that you can fully flesh out in that amount of time. Show us why Liu Kang is in the tournament, why Johnny Cage is in it, Why Sonya is in it and have them in the beginning only be out for themselves only to find out this tournament is fucked up once they see the first contestant get killed. Give us a reason why these guys would team up together and also show us the dynamic relationship between Sub-Zero and Scorpion, they're not slaves like the first movie suggested they're all in this for their personal reasons. Have it be accurate to the games where Liu Kang is the one to defeat Goro not Johnny Cage. You give me a character driven story with the Mortal Kombat universe and you'll get my 10 bucks any day for me to go see that. Mortal Kombat is now under Warner Bros. So that means big budgets to create this movie. Show the younger generation why Mortal Kombat was so popular to begin with and it's a guaranteed success at the box office and could make sequels because you got plenty of story material to cover with plots ranging from MK1 - All the way to Deception.
