I was always curious as to why Jade had the staff, Kitana the fans, and Mileena the sais. Why did NRS choose each weapon for each character and what would a potential back story be? Maybe Shao Kahn chose each weapon for each girl to train with and master. I don't know

You're right. You don't know. And neither do we.

Why don't' you ask Ed on his twitter?

Ed's a programmer and producer, he wouldn't know character design stuff, and even if he did, he'd just answer with a joke.

Mileena has sais because the girls' original MK2 designs are based on Elektra from Daredevil.

Kitana probably has fans because Tobias thought "Huh, what's a weapon from ancient Japan that's demure and girly looking but also dangerous?"

Jade's moves created for UMK3 don't seem to have any rhyme or reason, they just came up with a bunch of random stuff.
As far as backstory, I would just suppose that the girls trained in whatever best fits their personal style of fighting.
As both a princess and a ninja, Kitana would have the killer-geisha thing going on where she'd want the fan to carry around in social situations and look pretty and fan herself with and shit like rich chicks do...but oh-shit-it's-also-secretly-a-deadly-weapon! Also, all of her magic powers/fan moves use wind it seems like, so I wonder if those are powers inherent to her or if they come from the weapons, or if she picked the weapons first and then learned wind-magic to go with the weapons.
Mileena just really loves stabbin', that one's easy.
And Jade is apparently a show-off given her sassy-black-girl-everything-is-"too easy" MK9 personality, and there's no better weapon in the world for showing off than twirling around a long stick like you're in a marching band.

As a drummer I can say twirling sticks always shows off the badass in you. I wouldn't mind knowing but it's very obvious just by basing off their backgrounds on how they became who they are. My question really would more so be why does the size of Kitana's fans need to change every game? And render?

I just think it would be cool to get a little back story. Or even some speculation would be cool too.

I think my favorite design were the MKDA fans.
