about the only really games you can play online are Mortal Kombat 2 on the Playstation 3 downloaded from the psn for 4.99. if you don't have a internet router you should be able to just stick in your ethernet cable and you can connect online, etc. you may know all that stuff. you will have to create a playstation network account though which involves giving an email address and then creating a username.

you can also play MK: Deception and MK: Armageddon for the PS2 online as well but I haven't played those online recently so I don't know if I a lot of people are online playing.

Ultimate MK3 used to be on xbox live but was taken down. I heard that if you bought it b4 it was taken down it can be redownloaded but I'm not sure if still lets you play people online even if you have it. you used to be able to play MK: Armageddon on the 360 and original xbox of course but microsoft took down the servers earlier this year. that version IMO look really amazing on the 360 so it's a shame it can't still be played online anymore, but no one ever seemed to be online to play it when I logged on.

I believe you can also play just about any of the arcade games on MAME...I used to do this many years ago. I forget a lot of how that works so that may take some research but it's not super hard.

my advice....if you have a PS3 and MK2 is available to purchase in your region then it is more than worth the 4.99 price tag. the online matching system is not the best and you have the occasional connection problem but right now I'd say it is your best bay for online mortal kombat play...at least until the new game comes out and the new HD remix comes out. hope this helps.
