Yep, that's the way I do it too. I've played Kabal almost exclusively and I've only come across one other Kabal player. (When I happened to pick Smoke that one time.)
But it's funny how people don't know how to react to my instant-air fireballs and Nomad Dash canceling into a block or a saw blade. That's just because, for some reason, people don't play as Kabal that much.

I really don't understand the lack of Liu Kang players. He kicks all kinds of @$$ if you know what you're doing with him. I love my Liu Kang/Johnny Cage tag team.

Sindel is my main and nine times out of ten when I pick Scorpion will instantly appear, I for one commend anyone who picks less then obvious characters.
I will admit though I really suck at this game no matter who I face I tend to loose so playing online is rather an embarrasment ;)

i pick random 90% of the time so i can b good with everyone...i also end up fighting a lot of scorpions and smokes as a result...Mileena still my fav tho
Good topic OP. I only just started playing online (PS3). I fully expected a bunch of Scorpion/Noob spammers but I have to say the room I was in last night was decent...lots of variety in opponents. One guy had a pretty good Scorpion, and used a variety of moves. I main Mileena and Reptile for the mist part, but getting better with Kabal and Sektor. Out of like 12 matches, I fought Scorpion, Lui Kang, Nightwolf, Raiden, Noob, Sonya, even Kratos....better variety than I expected.
I absolutely raped Noob, Raiden and Sonya with Mileena, but overall I went 6-6...still learning how to compensate for timing issues with online play...what will work, which combos aren't worth trying. Another note, aside from a few matches, the lag was not bad at all on ranked matches! King of the Hill was pretty much unplayable...hope they get that patched and functioning better because it looks like a lot of fun.

to OP... good thing that fighting so many Scorps got you the experience to feel realy confortable when ppl pick him up...
But the main reason why you beat them ez is cause those ppl are not so great.
When facing a high lvl player things get different... no more random teleports and mid range spears....
Anyway.. what im saying is that it dosnt matter who ur opponent pick... if he is better than you,,he will prolly screw you up.... Scorp,Smoke or not...
I would love to play againts ur Sheeva...
I learned how to play whit 5 diff char at a very very high level so far.... Scorpion is one of them..... Kabal is my newest baby..........

Perhaps, but I've faced so many Scorpions I literally have a defense or counter for every last single one of his moves and combos. I crush expert Scorpion players almost as easily as novice ones simply because I have Scorpion's whole moveset locked down in my head.
So I wipe the floor with those with 5/11 win-loss ratios just as much as those with 237/10 win-loss ratios.
Doesn't matter how good the player is, the "system" Scorpion uses, from his teleport, to his spear, to his combos, is something I've pretty much cracked, and I only get into trouble if I fail to properly execute my own moves or I fluke my timing and leave myself open. After over a hundred matches, I have never lost to another Scorpion player.
When somebody picks Kung Lao, Ermac, Mileena, or Sonya, THEN we have a REAL fight going. But Smoke and Scorpion? They've become total non-issues and I get confident I can beat them 90% of the time with ease, no matter their skill level, simply due to knowledge of how to exploit their weaknesses.
Part of every good battle is knowing the flaws of your opponent as well as your own strength. I might be singing a different song if more people were accustomed to Sheeva's potential and how her moves actually work, but, again, she's so rarely fought online that even high-level players have significantly less experience fighting her than, say, another Scorpion or Smoke player.
Is it possible for someone to create an online room/tournament that allows every player except those that are being extremely overused and make the whole experience completely boring?
I think that would be a cool possibility. Have a room where everyone who joins fights everyone except the players who insist on choosing the likes of Scorpion (for example).
That would challenge/force people to play with others and it would also serve as a a "nest" for those players who want variety and fun playing with and against various characters and not the same overused ones.
Someone make this happen!

I did the same thing with MKD. I usually picked the characters that nobody really uses and made them my mains: Sindel was primary, followed by Tanya, Kira, and Havik (then a lot of people picked Tanya due to her 50/50 guessing games). I do it for a few reasons, one because I usually love the characters that are least loved (just turns out that way sometimes), and two, it is SO funny when a person picks a "good" character, I pick a "bad" one, and just mop the floor with them.
I have yet to get online with this one, but when I do, I will seek you out to give you a non-Scorpion experience

To OP...Ur right in the way where Scorpions have very little to surprise you and that Sheeva will trick the fuck out of almost evry players cuz we are so not used on how to properly escape her stomps and punish her..ect....
But again scorpions game is based on his hellfire and ex versions of it(makes it almost impossible to jump out of it)....baiting ppl to jump mid screen and throwing the spear to catch ur opponent while he or she is still in the air is a key play whit him....online this aint ez cause of lag issue but OFFline this work perfectly...u can throw spear and catch ppl jumping on reaction...
Scorp on the inside is not bad at all... his 1,1,1 is safe and fast,he can play mind games whit it connecting a grab in between and if the 1st two hits connect, then u thhrow the spear.... and if u block those (1,1..1.. 1,1,1) this build super fast meter for him along whit the chip dmg....
Im not saying that Scorpion is top tier or anything there..just that in the hands of the right player, that he can make you work much harder then what you normally get.....
To that i wanna add something about ppls W/L ratio.... based on my personal experience, i would say that 95% of them are not that good at all....in fact they are just good enough so that they wont lose to casual players...but they will stay away as far as they can to top players cause most of them have fragile egos and they dont want to "ruin" their W/L ratio....so they play you one game or two and then run the crap out....
and that among the 5% that are actualy top players,2 or 3 % of them dosnt realy like to play other top players because they hate losing...and again... they try to protect their record as much as they can....

I play with Kano and Shang Tsung online a lot for this very reason. I feel like i'm better with other characters that are played online more such as Smoke and Kung Lao. Knowing better combos and such. However, I get easier wins when I play as Shang Tsung and Kano(and love it when people bitch about Kano's xray because they decide to constantly hold down block and act as if his xray shouldn't have worked. Its a grapple.) It has to be because people lack the experience against them.
i been doin a lot of hidden cursor + random select
thou my mains are quan chi and baraka(thou people tend to pick characters that keep there distance when i pick him hmm), one reason i like tag mode is so i can have 2 diffrent defences that work for diffrent things .

I know exactly what OP is sayingg, good discussion!
I often use Quan chi and Mileena for the best part of my online play. Purely because of the reason OP stated. Not many people understand Quan Chi's movelist when fighting against him, and his Mindfuck move set gets the opponent everytime. b+3, 1+2, possibly my favourite set up ever.
I also main Sektor, which, near the beginning of release, didnt see any other players of sektor out there. Nowadays, im seeing alot more, but none of the ones ive played realise what he's actually capable of (Besides Brilliant projectiles and a fantastic Teleport punch.).

I LOVE picking characters that people don't use. I dunno why really, I just find it cool. And I like when others do it back, HOWEVER I still suffer from mild MK fanboyism and only pick characters i find cool. So right now I'm using Cyrax mainly, but have started using Sub Zero because even though plenty of people use him his style suits me better. I'm better when I play defensive and his combo's are relatively short and easy to pull off online through most lag. Still though, I haven't played as any of the girls (a little Sonya tho), Nightwolf, or Sheeva because I find them lame as fuck. But as my skill progresses I'm slowly starting to pick characters more on how they play and if I'm good with them than their story/appearance shit.
On top of this I'm indecisive as fuck and frequently practice with different characters. Like I watched Tom Brady's Sub Zero and got all hyped to main him, that lasted like a week and now I'm hyped to main Reptile and try out lamer characters I wouldn't normally use, like Lui Kang, because I've lost to a bunch of them.
But to the OP I think its badass you use Sheeva and are good, must feel good to pick a character everybody has deemed worthless and then proceed to rape with her. I still have PLENTY of trouble with aggressive Scorp players who know how to use the hellfire and don't randomly teleport. But I'll improve since theres so many of them to practice against.
I have yet to play against a Shang, Quan, or Sheeva and Kabal, however rare, gives me nightmares cause I don't know how the fuck to beat him, specially with Cyrax.

People are using sektor now? I've been using Sektor and Ermsc since forever and people are now telling me that my mains are "cheap".
Who's next? Kabal? Liu Kang? Stryker?SHEEVA? EDIT: I have fought less than 4 sektors and I play this game almost daily, I haven't gotten many ermacs either.
