TOURNAMENT BATTLE - ROUND 1:
Cyrax versus Frost
#14 Supreme Ranking #31
9 wins 5 losses Record 4 wins 5 losses
Round 3 (2013) Best Result Round 3 (2016)

Cyrax was part of the Lin Kuei techno assault of MK3. A prototype cyborg designated LK-4D4, he was programmed to hunt the renegade cryomancer Sub-Zero. MK Gold found him rescued from desert submersion, somehow altered. The soulless killing machine regained his humanity thanks to the Special Forces, charging into the new era of Deadly Alliance as the Outerworld Investigation Agency's resident scout. Rendered in full 3D with an expanded cyber-arsenal, Cyrax fought the good fight, becoming an unlikely ally to the vampires of Vaeternus. After the battle of Armageddon, Cyrax was destined to relive his automation in the rebooted timeline. The reboot introduced Cyrax as a reluctantly transformed Motswana net warrior, this time successful in capturing Sub-Zero. MKX comics told of his redemption, freed from his programming by Sub-Zero. He sacrificed himself to destroy Sektor and the corrupt Lin Kuei.

Frost was one of Sub-Zero's new Lin Kuei recruits introduced in Deadly Alliance! A female cryomancer of natural kori technique, she earned her place amongst the new clan by winning a tournament. While receiving teachings from the new Grandmaster, she plotted to steal the power of his Dragon Medallion. Greed was seemingly her undoing, but she briefly thawed for Armageddon, causing troubles for the demigod Taven who found her encased in ice. In the rebooted timeline of MKX, Frost is again seen impetuously challenging Sub-Zero's orders when he seeks peace with Scorpion's Shirai Ryu. Tie-in comics reveal her past as an underground death match fighter, but her future remains unknown.

Two generations of Lin Kuei clan fighters, each finding reasons to resist the decree of their masters. Their powers threaten to consume their humanity - which soul will find the means to endure? Choose their destiny! FIGHT!

Cyrax.

Never one if my favourites but he's always been fun to play and decent enough storyline. I hadnt realised he died in MKX comics.

Frost is a really awful rip off character. She has nothing unique about her. Just another bad guy wanting power. Pretty much my least favouritr character of all time.

I must be drunk, 'cause this time I'm actually voting for Frost.

Cyrax does have a solid storyline that's expanded in MK9, but it doesn't really amount to much in the end as he's automated anyway.

I DID like how Frost was repackaged in the comic as an MMA fighter ("Beverly Hills brat"), and while she's a female carbon copy of Sub-Zero, her saving grace is that she's the first character in the series (I think) whose storyline explored legit mental instability.

TOURNAMENT BATTLE - ROUND 1:
Taven versus Reiko
#56 Supreme Ranking #44
1 win 5 losses Record 11 win 5 losses
Round 2 (2015) Best Result Round 2 (2015)

Edenian demigod Taven was at the center of Mortal Kombat Armageddon: one of two new characters charged with a quest to defeat the elemental Blaze and unlock the powers to curb kombat's threat to reality. Taven navigated his way through some of the series' most iconic realms and opponents as a playable character, and star of Konquest mode. Now that the timeline has been restarted, Taven's fate is unknown. MKX arcade ending cameos allude to a history repeated, with Taven awoken from his godsleep early by Kenshi and Takeda. It remains to be seen if he will oppose his brother, or begin a chain reaction towards another Armageddon.

Though not a god himself, Reiko debuted as leader of Shinnok's infernal armies in the slaughter of the Heavens. Donning Shao Kahn's helmet in an infamous MK4 ending, Reiko remained a figure of speculation for many years. Returning in Armageddon, Reiko was now a General of Outworld, fighting to protect Quan Chi whilst harboring his own aspirations for power. Appearing in MKX tie-in comics, Reiko's cunning manipulated the short reign of Empress Mileena, and saw him serve Havik in exchange for newfound powers. The blood magic bestowed upon him was not all it seemed. His body tore itself apart, destroying him in the process.

Their influence has rippled through Mortal Kombat's history, threatening the balance of the realms, and the fate of the very gods themselves! Their pursuit of power has been denied, but could their history be rewritten? Choose their destiny! FIGHT!

I'm throwing my vote to the Gold Dragon himself. Reiko's an underrated character as well and had a great appearance in the comics though I wished he showed up as MKX DLC or have a bigger impact on the MKX plot. Those were missed opportunities in my opinion.

I can understand why people perceive Taven as a bland character due to the writing. Plus the plot in Armageddon in the form of a quest along with depicting Taven as a naïve character was forced. But come on, the way he shittalked Wu Lae ("Oh, I'm free to go? After I defeated your entire clan? HOW GENEROUS OF YOU!") and Shujinko ("foolish old man") in Konquest Mode were one of his most memorable character moments. A deadpan snarker as a protagonist was definitely refreshing unlike Liu Kang and Shujinko.

The shame was that Taven never got the chance to interact with other important characters in his realm like Kitana and Sindel which I thought was another missed opportunity and would have intertwined the Forces of Light gathering with Taven's subplot.

If Taven was to be brought back, I think you can make him less bland by expanding his story. Talk about his birth, how he and his brother got their tattoos (my theory was that Orin and Caro marked them after mastering their training under their dragon mentors), and his relationships with the other characters like Daegon, Orin, and even Jerrod when he was alive. Plus mention how he and Daegon helped fend off Kahn's first invasion of Edenia before being put into comas. Depict Taven more as a hardened war veteran, but still retain that snarkiness he had in Konquest rather than that naïve rich kid in Konquest. Show him dealing with inner conflict since he comes from both worlds: should he be more like a god with his power or more compassionate like the mortals from his mother's side? So basically Taven would be Captain America combined with a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.

Also, I think Orin should travel along Taven rather than be stuck in that cave and be killed off so we could see more interesting interactions and character moments between them if NRS does bring them back. Have Orin be more like a sarcastic version of Alfred Pennyworth, but also impart words of wisdom.

Plus have Taven interact with more of his own people and other characters including Rain, Kuai Liang, Kenshi, Fujin etc.

Taven also definitely needs a redesign with his costume and his face so he looks more younger and not like a greasy 40-year old like in Armageddon and the MKX ending lol

So that's my take.

Even though he has the charisma of cardboard, I'm a sucker for the underdog. Besides, I kinda got my fill of Reiko in the comic. I did main him in MK4 and loved his character design. Maybe it was the sideburns. :D

I voted Reiko. The obsession with Shao Kahn was played out a little too hard in the comics but he's still a fun character and one of the first ones I picked up in MK4.

TOURNAMENT BATTLE - ROUND 1:
Ashrah versus Dairou
#52 Supreme Ranking #73
0 wins 4 losses Record 0 wins 3 losses
Round 1 (2014) Best Result Round 1 (2012)

Ashrah is a demon heart clamoring for the warmth of light. Once a member of the Brotherhood of Shadows, she was hunted by her own sisters at the order of Quan Chi. Introduced in Deception; Ashrah wore the skin of a mortal, wielding a heavenly kriss with which she sheds the taint of evil with every demon she slays. The death of a powerful demonic force would allow Ashrah to permanently ascend from the Netherrealm, but such a kill did not come in her second and final appearance in Armageddon. Unseen during MKX's Netherrealm war, her fate in the new timeline remains unknown.

Dairou was once a member of the Seidan Guard, until he succumbed to a moment of rage, unlawfully killing an assailant after his family was murdered. His years of service to the Orderrealm were forgotten in an instant -- sentenced to the very prison he once filled! Freed during a Resistance riot; Dairou debuted in Deception as a mercenary resistant to the anarchy of Chaos, but no longer loyal to the law of Order. As a sword for hire his services were now available to the highest bidder, making him an unlikely agent of Darrius -- the man responsible for his family's deaths! He was present during Armageddon, but Dairou's fate in the rebooted timeline remains unknown.

They are warriors whose lives have been changed by the sharp edge of the sword. Through the blade Ashrah found purpose and redemption, and Dairou found chaos and the loss of everything. Will they ever reach absolution? Choose their destiny! FIGHT!

For this one, I went with Dairou.

Although I wasn't overly keen on his involvement in the MKD Order-Chaos thing, I still think he has a bit of untapped potential. I liked his concept as a samurai from MKDA more than the mercenary thing though and that's what I want them to explore. Especially since Erron Black seems to be the mercenary for hire in current timeline. It would also be good to see what motivates Dairou in the long term. Hopefully he appears in the new timelines since he hasn't been killed off in the comics.

To me Ashrah is a bit of a waste. Her Brotherhood of Shadow demon wanting to be good was a bit of a rip off of Sareena, who is much more interesting to me due to her ties to the mythology characters etc. Ashrah's involvement with Nitara in MKA was a bit better but I cant really see what they would do with her now, especially since the vampires aren't even mentioned in this timeline yet. If she doesn't get the 'big kill' then she stays a demon and gets the same story over and over looking for it. If she does, well it kind of ends her arc. There isn't really anywhere else for her to go - although I know that can be worked on - it just doesn't interest me personally. I just don't see a niche for her. At least Sareena has her involvement elsewhere to go with, especially since her Mythologies arc was canon in the current timeline.

But yeah there technically is potential in both, but Dairou just interests me more and I can see him getting a more interesting development overall.

Really good points! A lot of this era characters are underrated. I was more excited for Reiko but now that MKX is over I am starting to get more interested in Taven and Daegon.

More good points! I think the thing MK could do is get back to telling stories about individual characters and rivalries. Story mode doesnt do that and so a lot of characters dont seem to have much going on. I think its nice when characters just have rivalries or short term goals and we get to see that play out. Then maybe something new could come along later or if they have unique gameplay they can just be side characters with rivalries. Maybe Ashrah and Sareena would be good enemies. It was a shame Ashrah didnt apear in MKX as part of Shinnoks army and work from there.

I would also like to see Dairou just be a ronin type of mercenary. He could be really interesting as a guy who shows up and you never know whose side he is on. Kind of like Deathstroke or guys like that in DC. He gets my vote, but I like Ashrah too. Both are underrated.

Ashrah is one of my most favorite underrated characters. The fact that she has the same redemption arc as Sareena should not be concluded to make them similar. The only reason Ashrah got out of the Netherrealm was because of Datusha, this so-called holy weapon that slays demons yet makes the user somewhat akin to a religious zealot (world filled with sinners, better cleanse them lol). Compare that to Sareena who escapes on her own accord with the help of the younger Sub-Zero Kuai Liang (Another missed opportunity for MKX were those two interacting in Story Mode.)

Also, Datusha and her nun-like costume should be the main thing that makes Ashrah stand out as a character especially in relation with the Moroi subplot with Nitara. Along with Sareena, I wouldn't mind throwing in both Ashrah and Nitara in MK11 just to see how both characters duke it out.

Or Ashrah could be serving a new race of angelic creatures and that sword was a test for anyone trapped in the Netherrealm to free themselves, but now the freed person has to undergo a trial of temptation, resisting the sword's power while being sane at the same time.

So Ashrah's got my vote.

It'll never happen because NRS can't see the forest for the trees anymore, but Dairou truly should be repackaged into a free-agent role in the MKverse, kicking butt and taking names and disappearing as quickly as he arrived, all while not officially taking any side. Even a minor role in the comics -- if that ever comes back -- would suffice.

The Order/Chaos thing didn't pan out while Erron Black has since taken over the "mercenary" role in the series, but Dairou comes off a little less gimmicky than Black (and, dare I say, Scorpion, in regards to his backstory). My second-favorite character after Ermac.

Someone earlier posted that MK needs to focus again on individual characters rather than relying on story modes to advance storylines. I agree with that a thousand percent.

TOURNAMENT BATTLE - ROUND 1:
Nitara versus Kenshi
#41 Supreme Ranking #7
2 wins 4 losses Record 13 wins 5 losses
Round 2 (2012) Best Result Runner-Up (2015)

In Deadly Alliance, Nitara revealed there were more creatures to fear in the shadows of Outworld than previously known. In the wake of the Emperor's apparent fall; Nitara sought a mystic orb responsible for binding the vampire realm of Vaeternus to Outworld. She achieved her goal through cunning manipulation, revered by the restored Moroi Empire, but the threat was not over. In Armageddon, she was the target of a mystic kriss sword wielded by the demon Ashrah Able to suck the lifeblood from her opponents, the winged vampire remains a unique addition to the series. Though unseen in the rebooted timeline, MKX tie-in comics feature the fruits of her blood magic, acquired through unknown means by Quan Chi.

Kenshi too debuted in Deadly Alliance, part of a new generation of warriors. Wearing a red cloth over blind eyes, the master swordsman now saw the world through the mind's eye. The victim of manipulation, Kenshi lost his sight freeing his ancestor's souls at the behest of Shang Tsung. The arrogant fighter learned valuable lessons in humility and the art of mental kombat. He used his telekinetic abilities to serve the Outerworld Investigation Agency, fighting to defend the Earth from external and internal threats. In Deception, he found an ally in Sub-Zero as the souls of his ancestors returned to his sword. In Armageddon, they guided him on an individual path, continuing his vendetta against the Red Dragon and the fight against Shinnok. The reboot timeline saw Kenshi make a DLC return alongside the fighters of the original trilogy, before he made a full fledged return in MKX. Comic tie-ins told of his continued battle with the Red Dragon, who were responsible for the murder of his parter Suchin - the mother of his son. Kenshi continues to fight as an OIA agent and father.

As new additions to Deadly Alliance they introduced a new era to Mortal Kombat! One plays with the minds of men, while the other masters the minds hidden abilities. Choose their destiny! FIGHT!

For me this one goes to Nitara.

She was my favourite new character of MKDA and I have been so disappointed she hasn't returned properly. Her Armageddon story was ok but not the direction I wanted her to go in. It would be really interesting to see what another race will do in the current timeline. I cant help think though that D'Vorah has sort of taken her place in the current timeline as the new alien female. Anyway, if she does return I would like to see her stay a neutral character, but also be a slight antagonist of the good guys. In her MKDA Konquest mdoe, there is a reference to Khameleon and a potential rivalry, I would love to see that play out as I would so love Kham to be back too.

Kenshi was really interesting in MKDA too, certainly not anything we had seen before. but sicne then its all went downhill for me. He had a rather weak MKD and MKA story, and they all but forgot about him for the most part in MKX. He just seemed to be there.

Went with Kenshi. I'm willing to forgive his being reduced to a plot device for his kid in MKX.

I voted for Nitara last year, but she's beyond the "potential" stage at this point. Her dipstick is pretty much dry now in terms of storyline relevance.
On a side note, it was nice to see a little Dairou love on the forum if not in the poll itself.

TOURNAMENT BATTLE - ROUND 1:
Kitana versus Cassie Cage
#8 Supreme Ranking #40
14 wins 5 losses Record 1 win 3 losses
Quarters (2013) Best Result Round 2 (2015)

Kitana gave MKII a fan force thrust as one of the new warriors fighting out of Outworld. As the rightful heir to the Edenian throne, she quickly joined the side of angels, aiding Earthrealm in its battle against The Emperor. She fought her own mother as a klassic return in MKTrilogy, and made another late run in MK Gold, her realm now freed but under threat from the fires of the Netherrealm. Deadly Alliance launched Kitana into a new era of pre-emptive aggression alongside the Shokan. She fell in kombat, becoming a resurrect slave of The Dragon King playable only in MK Unchained. She was back among the living in Armageddon, doomed to relive her history as Shao Kahn's surrogate daughter when Raiden created a new timeline. This time Kitana perished fighting her own mother, resurrected as a revenant pawn of Quan Chi. In MKX she remains in the Netherrealm, freed of Quan Chi's influence and eyeing control of the inferno.

Cassie Cage leads the charge of a new generation of kombat! Born into a timeline where Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade were the only survivors of Outworld's Invasion; Cassie combines her parents skills into a brash, youthful defense of Earthrealm. A member of the OIA, she battled the Red Dragon clan in MKX tie-in comics, briefly becoming a slave to Havik & Reiko in the process. In MKX Cassie is again her own woman, confronting the terror of the Netherrealm's invasion, and growing tensions between Outworld's new emperor Kotal Kahn, and the forces of Earthrealm. The power of her birthright helps her defeat the fallen Elder God Shinnok, a hero for a new age.

They've both exemplified new generations of Mortal Kombat heroes, fighting to overthrow some of the deadliest forces corrupting the realms. Their heritage brings great power, but whose is greatest? Choose their destiny! FIGHT!
