Mortal Kombat Movie Announced - Set for Release in 2013!
TANCHAROEN DIRECTS!

It all began with that infamous Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer, which was intended as a proof-of-concept and pitch to Warner Bros. by film director and choreographer, Kevin Tancharoen which become the catalyst for the widely acclaimed Mortal Kombat: Legacy digital series, which garnered just over 60 million unique views over on YouTube collectively.

Mock Poster

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that a full-length feature film for Mortal Kombat is currently in development with a release window of 2013 under the film giant - New Line Cinema who have given Kevin the green-light to begin the films development.

"Mortal Kombat is heading back to the big-screen.

New Line is hiring the filmmakers of the popular Mortal Kombat digital series, made earlier this year by corporate sibling Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, to take on a new adaptation of the classic 1990s fighting game.

The short was viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube, and although no movie deal materialized, he was asked to direct the 10-episode web series, which debuted in April, attracting more than 15 million unique visitors.

Off that success, Warners and New Line execs thought it was time to try to revisit a big-screen effort. (New Line made a Mortal Kombat movie in 1995, which grossed more than $70 million domestically and helped launch a directing career for Paul W. S. Anderson. A follow-up movie in 1997, however, fizzled.)

Uziel is returning to write the new movie, which is still in the development stages. There is no actor attached and the new story will not serve as an extension of the game or digital series.

Dave Neustadter and Walter Hamada are overseeing for New Line."

Whilst there are no actors currently attached, it'd possibly be a relatively safe bet to anticipate some cast members to return from the Legacy series. Oren Uziel who was enlisted to write for Legacy, has been confirmed to pen the upcoming feature film.

ComingSoon.net had the chance to feature an extensive and interesting interview with Kevin Tancharoen in which he shares his views and excitement concerning the news. To check out what Tancharoen had to reveal and confirm about the next MK movie, check out his interview at ComingSoon.net.

This week, I engaged in a mini-interview with Syco Collectibles Head Sculptor, Mason Cheng, who provides us with insight and knowledge of the sculpting process and who he is most looking forward to immortalizing in stone:

[MKO] 1.) Hey Mason. Incredible work with your sculpts so far. Syco Collectibles must be very proud! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the world of sculpting? [Mason] Thank you very much! I learnt my trade in Art College and I have now been working as a sculptor for nearly 13 years. I guess I’m just a normal guy who is fortunate to do what he loves!

2.) How did you end up getting involved with Syco Collectibles? Well, it was actually quite a coincidence! I had some sculpts that I’d made displayed in the window of my ground floor apartment. Jonathan and Mikael happened to walk by and my figures caught their attention and we started to talk. I agreed to do a test sculpt for them in order to show them what I could do. They were very pleased with the result and I’ve been working for Syco Collectibles ever since!

3.) Could you run us through the process of sculpting the characters? What makes it fun and are there any obstacles you encounter along the way? First of all I start with a wire frame and make a basic shape of the pose. Then I shove a load of clay onto it and start to build and form the basic body. From there I can start to build the correct proportions and form the body and muscles. After I feel that this looks correct I will start to smooth out the figure so it is very smooth and ready to start all the details. Once this is complete I will start adding all the details on to the face and the hands. I will then start to add the clothing onto the figure and finally the texturing. What makes it fun, interesting and challenging is to be able to create something from just looking at images. As for obstacles, the main thing is that the feeling has to be right. It’s very hard to explain but if the feeling is not there it will affect the final result and being a bit of a perfectionist I’d have to start over again...

4.) Approximately, how long does it take to complete a sculpt ready for it to become a mould and to qualify for the paintmaster? It depends on the size and on how detailed the character is in terms of costume etc. Normally I sculpt a 10” statue in about one month but again it varies a great deal.

5.) Have you played Mortal Kombat previously? What's your favourite aspect of the franchise? My bosses made me play it (for educational purposes they said haha). I really enjoyed it but my wife wasn’t as happy since I missed dinner that night!

6.) Do you have a favourite character? I’ve learnt to like a few. All the females are cool and gorgeous but if I had to pick one I’d say Kung Lao.

7.) Who in particular are you most excited to start sculpting and why ? I’m happy to sculpt any character to be honest. There are a few that would be quite challenging such as Baraka and his teeth but I like a challenge! I can tell you who I really enjoyed sculpting was Liu Kang. Since most characters I’ve sculpted before have been more ‘Western looking’ it was interesting to sculpt someone with Asian features like myself.

Great stuff! Thanks for taking the time to have a chat with us, Mason; and keep up the phenomenal work! We look forward to seeing more of your sculpts in the coming months!

Vincent Proce reveals six new concept art designs for MK9 characters!

Ex-Midway designer, Vincent Proce, has released another collection of concept art featuring new Mortal Kombat 9 character-designs for Reptile, Johnny Cage, Cyrax, Mileena, Nightwolf and Sub-Zero. We now know that he has working in the new MK game before he left the company. From his blog:

"It's been a long time since I posted and the MK fans out there have been asking to see some of the concept art that I did for MK9.

I was only asked to do a few and with some very specific direction, but I also took the liberty of presenting a few concepts more to suit my own taste, hoping they would want to take the game in that direction.

The first three concepts I did (Reptile, Johnny Cage and Cryax) I had no interaction with the team and are the ones in which I branched out on my own.

I had just rolled off of another project and moved right to MK9 and these were the first pieces I showed to the guys. The first version of Cryax had a face that Ed Boon pointed out to look like Howard the Duck (he was right it did have the shape of Howard the Duck) so I changed that, but that was all I changed."

"The next three I did (Milena, Sub Zero & Nightwolf) were directed by the team to look like what they did in MK2. I think they all turned out pretty good, but I was a little disappointed with what I did with Sub-Zero, he was always my fav of the MK characters and I think I could have iterated on him a few more times.

These were the last images I did for Midway Games before I left. I do have a bunch of earlier concepts from different MK pitches that have never seen the light of day. I will post them when the time is right I suppose…"

Back in September 2009, Vincent released a series of re-imaged and upgraded MK1 character designs featuring Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Raiden, Kano, and Sub-Zero with some personal commentary concerning each character:

You can view his first art in our News-Story article which also features MKvsDC Artwork.

You can also head over to his blog to support Vincent Proce and see his original post concerning the first four characters he revealed. You can click here to read about the fifth character he uploaded in March 2010.

Even though Vincent Pro has long left the Midway Company and MK team, he has said that he "would still like to one day redesign all the rest of the original characters" if he ever finds the time.

Hopefully this is not the last we will hear or see from Vincent's work. We all look forward to all those early concepts from different MK pitches that have never been revealed.
