UPDATE #1: Creative Director of NetherRealm Studios, Ed Boon, has posted a little article in PlayStation.Blog.

UPDATE #2: IGN has uploaded a Video Review for the MK: Arcade Kollection:

You can also read their Full Review in an Article found in their official website. From their article:

"I've been a fan of Mortal Kombat from the very second my mom told me I couldn't play it (lol it's my job now). Spike pits, decapitations, and Shaolin monks transforming into cheetahs define my '90s fighting game experience. So ask me to pay $10 for some old school Mortal Kombat and I'm down for it, even if it's a reminder that these games are cheap, frustrating, and dated."

"As frustrating a challenge as the games present, my nostalgia still came back in full force. Synapses I haven't fired neurons across in well over a decade whirred back to life, reminding me of all the little strategic minutiae of the games. There's something immensely satisfying about re-figuring out how to beat Shao Kahn after almost 20 years. And when you add a friend to the mix the fun increases exponentially. Mortal Kombat may be a weak fighter compared to other games, but it's one of the most fun multiplayer games around. "

Our goal is ensure the best gaming experience possible for everyone playing a Mortal Kombat game. Please stay tuned for updates on when a patch will be released"

New MKast on the MK: Arcade Kollection and Development Tales from NRS!

Rigo Cortes, the MK Community Manager from NetherRealm Studio's has uploaded a new MKast (Series 2, Episode 7) featuring the up-coming Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection.

The video offers an extensive and fun commentary concerning the experiences and opinions of various NRS team members regarding the development of the first three Mortal Kombat games.

The video includes Ed Boon (Creative Director and Co-creator), Carlos Pesina (Raiden), Dan Forden (Sound Effects & Music), Mike Boon, John Vogel (MK Backgrounds), Brian Lebaron, Eddie Ferrier, Tony Goskie (MK Backgrounds), Troy Bowman, Paulo Garcia and Mike Taran.

In relation to the MKast video, Steve Beran, the Director of Art from NRS, has uploaded an interesting article on the PlayStation.Blog website.

In Mortal Kombat Memories: Development Tales from NetherRealm Studios he talks about his personal experiences concerning the games and has uploaded three mini-videos that feature Dan Forden, Ed Boon, and Carlos Pesina sharing further personal (and quite funny) experiences on the development of the first three games that were not featured in the MKast video. From the article:

"One of the best memories I had from the Mortal Kombat II days was when I was asked to be the floating monk in the Tower background. You can’t really tell it’s me in the shrouded robe, but at the time I dorked out hard telling everyone I knew that I was in the latest Mortal Kombat!"

"It was funny how low-budget the whole thing was [MK1]. It was actually just filmed in the hallway where we tested the games with a low-end video camera, a few lights, and a piece of black cloth as the backdrop. It was a very garage-band scenario but I recall just being blown away that I was witnessing the creation of something big, never really knowing how big Mortal Kombat would actually become."

"Making Mortal Kombat 3 was a really great time. We busted our asses. We worked crazy hours and stayed overnight quite a bit. Building the character costumes was probably the most fun. Now we build everything in 3D, but back then we had to rely on sporting goods stores, army surplus stores, Halloween shops, and a lot of duct tape. It was a blast getting the cyborg costumes together: it was a mix of BMX motocross gear, hockey protection, duct tape, and rubber tubing."

Finally, Mortal Kombat's Official Facebook Page updated with a picture featuring NetherRealm Studio's very own Goro Lair!:

"With Arcade Kollection coming out next week, we figured we would share Goro's Lair. The digital version is certainly a lot more portable."

Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection will be available for download in the PSN ($9.99) and Xbox Live (800 MS Points) next Tuesday August 30th in the United States. It will then be available globally August 31st and for PC ($9.99).

Thanks to forum members blacksaibot and totheark, for their heads up concerning the MKast! And thanks to samus_aran3900 for the heads up on "Goro's Lair"!

Mortal Spotlight: MKO Q&A With Darren Shahlavi
Legacys Kano Reveals Previous Brush With MK, Goddard Influence, and more!

Darren Shahlavi is Kano! With a career-defining role as British boxer "Twister" in the 2010 Hong Kong hit, Ip Man 2, Darren Shahlavi confirmed his status as the ultimate martial arts baddie you'll love to hate! A familiar face of film and television, the breakout fighting role made him a natural choice when Kevin Tancharoen was given license to bring MK back to live-action with the anthology webseries, Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

Appearing in three of the nine episodes; Darren Shahlavi will be remembered by Mortal Kombat fans as Kano -- the Black Dragon crook famous for killing Sonya Blade's partner and igniting one of the series' longest running blood feuds. Starring opposite Jeri Ryan (Sonya) and Michael Jai White (Jax); Shahlavi plays key to bringing the classic plot to life, injecting MK's original rogue with a fresh brand of delicious contemptibility.

The role proved to be Shahlavi's second brush with MK, one of the interesting facts he shared in this special interview with Mortal Kombat Online. With a Blu-Ray release coming November, MKO probed the actor for further insight into the role, the work, his history, the future, and which character he'd love to beat the snot out of.

[MKO]: How did you get involved with MK Legacy?
[Darren Shahlavi]: I got a message from Larnell Stoval, the fight choreographer, a few months earlier, saying he may want to get me in on something. Later, I heard they were doing Mortal Kombat as a web series, I asked my agent to look out for it, I also contacted Larnell, who knew about me. Kevin [Tancharoen; series Director] had seen Ip Man 2, where I play a rather brash British boxer, and they both thought I'd fit as Kano.

What is your background in martial arts and acting?
I started Judo when I was seven years old, and once I saw Bruce Lee, I was hooked on martial arts and films. I trained in everything and studied all the movies, too. I was most impressed with the Hong Kong films and when I was a teenager I took part in film fighting seminars, including one that [Ip Man star] Donnie Yen was doing in London, England. That gave me the confidence I could work in Asia as a bad guy, and by the time I was twenty, I was out there, working in film.

What was your impression of Mortal Kombat before Legacy?
I was very familiar with MK, mainly the movie and the soundtrack. I loved it. I trained to the music all the time. I didn't play the game much at all.

The first movie I ever did was a Hong Kong movie that starred Robin Shou a few years before he was Liu Kang. We met each other again in Hong Kong in a bar and he told me all about the filming of Mortal Kombat and showed me pics from the shoot in Thailand. I also visited him on the set of Annihilation in London. He said he could get me a small part in it, but at the time I'd just got a lead role in a martial arts movie called Bloodmoon, where I fought Hakim Alston, the guy who Robin fights with bo staff in MK1.

Kano gets an upgrade in MK Legacy!

Kano's background has been connected to Japan, the United States, and finally Australia. You yourself have an interesting heritage. Is that something important to you as an actor?
Of course my background is very important to me. It is who I am. Born and raised in England, I grew up in Hong Kong and live in North America. I've worked on movies all over the world. As an actor, I'm sure it helps me that my roots may not be too deep, but wide spread.

Did you have a particular place in mind when you played Kano?
Good question, but the short answer is no. I didn't give us a location.

How would you describe your Kano, in general?
Seriously enjoyable, loves to be bad! He wants to be feared rather than loved, without a clue, that will change in time.

Did you feel a specific sense of character or attitude was important for the role?
Absolutely. Untouchable, domineering, masculine yet proud arrogance. A pretty petty little gangster with dreams to be bigger than his dream.

The late Trevor Goddard made a real impression playing Kano in the 1995 film. You share some of his iconic dialogue. Did you take inspiration from his portrayal, or feel any pressure?
When I was younger my best mate Jawaz and I didn't see much of each other, as we lived far apart. We would greet each other with the line, "Hello, baby. Did you miss me?"
I loved what Trevor Goddard did with Kano and decided to play him more internally. I added "I'm gonna miss you, baby" [in Legacy Ep. 1] as a nod to Trevor's Kano. You don't try to top a great performance. Only to differ.

A lot of people are going to recognize you from other recent work -- I personally loved Ip Man 2. How does Kano stack up against another classic bad guy role Twister" Milos?
Kano is Twister's little cousin. Can you imagine going out drinking with them both? It would be a riot. Someone asked how I prepared to play Kano, I said by playing Twister and having so much fun. The audiences everywhere loved to hate Twister, so I knew who Kano was right away -- Twister's little cousin. An ignorant, arrogant, small timer with big dreams, misguided, but going places because of big balls and a bigger mouth.

Your fight with Jax (Michael Jai White) set the tone for Legacy's action. What did you think of the style of action and choreography?
Larnell called me the Sunday before we went to camera and said, "Where are you?" I said, "At home watching a movie with a cup of tea." He said they were rehearsing the fight and waiting for me!

Somebody from production forgot to contact me and tell [me] about the rehearsal, so by the time I got there I was playing catch-up and didn't get any chance to add anything I wanted to the choreography. When we came to shoot it, they had been shooting other stuff all day and we had two hours to rush through the fight. Believe me, at the rate of speed we were going, Kevin, Larnell, our DP Kim [Miles] and the crew, and Mike and I, we did good. We had to skip some of the stuff and normally I would have been saying I need to do some kicks here, etc, but there was no time. Larnell did a great job. I just saw Sektor and Cyrax; the fight was magic. Kevin has a wonderful vision and is prepared to the brim. He has an infectious enthusiasm, with experience and conviction way beyond his years.

If you could have any fight with another character or member of the cast, who would it be?
I want to fight Goro. I want Kano to kick the shit out of Goro, up and down and all around. Big, fast, powerful, well placed kicks, like Hwang Jang Lee against Andre the Giant!

The only thing Jax cares for less than protocol is Kano!

So, what was it like having your eye punched out by another man? Was that something that attracted you to the role, or was it just a little extra bonus?
That's the strangest question anyone has asked me in a while! Never crossed my mind.

How cool is it having a cybernetic eye? How was that special effect achieved and was it as awesome as it looks?
It was uncomfortable. Modifications will need to be made, but I thought it looked wonderful. It actually had an LED and a battery behind my head, so the light did glow. All the crew wanted pictures with Kano that day!

Kano really bookends Legacy, appearing in the first and last episodes. He's a stalwart of the games. Is this a character you would like to do more with?
I'd love to play Kano again, a number of times.
There is a lot that one can do with a young fresh bad guy like that. We've only just begun.

What do you think might be in store for the future?
No idea. Nobody has officially mentioned anything to me.
Legacy feels like a hot girl you got to shag once, and you hope to run into her again soon and really get to know, explore, and play around. Have some fun and maybe get serious.

Mortal Kombat Online must thank Darren Shahlavi for his time and candor! Episodes of Mortal Kombat: Legacy are still available free to stream via Machinima, with digital copies also available on iTunes, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network [full details]. Legacy comes to Blu-Ray with unedited episodes and behind-the-scenes extras November 8 [full story].

Mortal Kombat 10, MK: Arcade Kollection, and 3 MK-Royalty HD renders!

In an extensive article and interesting interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, spoke briefly about NetherRealm Studio's plans for the future installments in the successful franchise. From the interview:

"We’re going to at least have a conversation about a sequel, but we certainly haven’t started or planned out anything,” offers Boon. “I would love to see another one come out in the not-too-distant future. At the same time, I personally wouldn’t want to release one really fast — like next year — because I think you can oversaturate [the market], especially having released a game that’s doing exceptionally well. I would really want to give it time to breathe"

It appears that work on MK 10 hasn't began and that NRS seems to be serious about "exploring other opportunities beyond the fighting genre" (as they told OXM in their interview).

Whether this refers to a new non-fighting game based on Mortal Kombat or a completely new series-franchise is yet to be confirmed. For now, we can all be happy to know that a sequel to MK(2011) is definitely likely and that one of their main priorities is the quality of the game.

On another note, Mortal Kombat's Official Facebook Page has confirmed that the Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection will be available for download this August 30th in North America. It will then be available globally on the 31st. Warner Bros. has issued a press release:

Welcome back to where it all began! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announces the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection will officially be available for download in the United States on August 30, 2011. Launching on PlayStation®Network for $9.99, this will mark the first time the original Mortal Kombat arcade trilogy - Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 - have been brought together in a single collection. On the next day, August 31, 2011, the game will also be available globally for PSN, for Xbox Live (800 MS Points) and PC ($9.99).

Developed by Other Ocean in conjunction with NetherRealm studios, the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection will feature online play, leader boards, achievements and trophies, as well as offering fans the chance to play through the games in their original arcade state. Rigo Cortes, from NetherRealm Studios has told us that some new footage covering the MK: Arcade Kollection will be released today by Pulse PlayStation, so, keep a look out for coming updates!

For now, you can check out a new video with some brief footage (featuring Scorpion and Sub-Zero [MK1], Raiden and Liu Kang [MK2], and Sonya Blade and Kano [MKU]) in their website.

Their video confirms that the Kollection is enhanced with Online Play, Leader boards, and Trophies!

Rigo has also told us that he is working on a MKast video concerning the MK:AK.

Finally, Rigo has sent us over three HD renders featuring the Royal Woman of Mortal Kombat: Sindel, Kitana, and Mileena!

Though she was first confirmed back in December 2010, Queen Sindel's render never received an official release. This is most certainly a nice and lovely treat to all the MK fans. We hope that this means that the rest of the many character renders that were not officially released will be revealed soon in all their HD glory.

Kitana's render file was originally corrupted and featured some anomalies, but, we have now received the corrected file in order to make this update. Though Kitana's and Mileena's renders were officially released back in January, this is the first time we get to see them in their full HD dimensions.

A big thanks to Rigo, Mortal Kombat's Community Manager, for giving us this lovely treat. We appreciate these renders and we can't wait to collect the rest of the pending ones!

Thanks to forum members flawlessvictoryfatality, MKRAYDEN, and John for their heads up concerning the MK Arcade Kollection and the OXM Interview!

Mortal Kombat Online Presents: Fight Klub - Ladder Kombat Tournament!
Single, Tag and Mirror Matches - Achievements and More!

Mortal Kombat Online is proud to present the next iteration of our MKO Tournament - Fight Klub - Ladder Kombat! following up from our previous Tournament and still ongoing Fight Klub! Below is a comprehensive guide explaining the structure of this exciting new venture! The MKO Fight Klub is helmed by it's Director - . Please contact him via PM or e-mail if you have any additional queries.

"Ladder Kombat is your chance to ascend to the top of the charts here at MKO. Offering up Three flavors of play in Ladder Kombat: singles, tag, and mirrors. It Begins on Thursday September 1st 2011 "
"Kombatants. I welcome you. What you see before you is a series of portals that will take you to the realms of our world. We Elder Gods refer to it as the Nexus. As you can see, scores of warriors have been gathered at this location. Your first task is to prove your worth by defeating those around you. Once you have displayed your dominance, I will open a door for you to embark on your spiritual journey." The words of Argus...

SINGLES:

Singles is basically like the current tournament play that you see already in MKO Fight Klub, except this is not a tournament format. Earn ranking points, surpass your rivals, and climb to the top of your rung of the ladder (named after the various realms and important locales of Mortal Kombat). If you're already holding the championship and successfully defend your title enough times, you'll unlock something special!

TAG:

Tag Kombat makes its debut in MKO Fight Klub! We all know that you can bring it in 1-on-1 fights, but can you handle the pressure of a 2-on-2? Prove yourself worthy with double the man (or woman) power and you can also win a tag championship! The same ladders (and "secrets") await you if you play at the top of your game!

MIRRORS:

Have you ever felt that you are the best with a certain character? Think you have the best Kabal on MKO? Here is where you'll prove it! Fight against other people in mirror matches to see who's the best with a given character. Mirror matches carry a different match structure than the singles and tag formats, which are the standard Fight Klub rules (play a best of three sets, each set is best of seven). Mirror matches are first to five. This is also the only format that allows Freddy and Kratos, so if you want to rock them, enter here!

RANKING SYSTEM:

In all formats, you will be ranked based on your wins, losses, sweeps, who you defeat/lose to, and your championships/title defenses. You will be assigned a point value based on your record (hidden, only Fight Klub Director - m0s3ph will know your point total) and this will determine where you stack up against the competition. Don't worry, tournaments aren't going away. You will still earn (or lose) points in tournament matches, so please, continue to enter them! You will also be informed if you are eligible to challenge for a championship. You must be within 10 points of the champion to be able to challenge for the championship. If you are more than 10 points behind, you may still challenge the champion if you wish, but it will be considered a non-title fight.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Yes, we have installed a series of achievements for you guys to discover and "unlock" for bonus points. If you are the first to unlock a given achievement, it will be revealed for all to see. Everyone who has reached an achievement will be listed under that achievement, and everyone who does so will receive the point bonus. Again, it is very important that you report everything that m0s3ph has asked for when sending him match results, because a lot of these achievements have to do with your fights and who you're using. Good luck getting these...

HOW TO PLAY:

The month of September will be used to determine the initial rankings. During this time, you may challenge anyone you want in order to set up matches with them. Here are the rules regarding setting up matches and reporting match results:

  • Challenges are to be made to opponents both in the official Thread AND through the PM system. M0s3ph will do his best to contact users myself, but please, do PM them and if you can also find them on XBL/PSN, even better.
  • Remember, Freddy and Kratos are only legal in their respective mirrors ladders. They are not allowed in singles or tag.
  • If you challenge an opponent and they do not respond to you within three days, it is considered a forfeit. Please try to stay on top of this thread as best as you can.
  • Like we stated above, the standard tournament match structure is the rule for singles and tag, and for mirrors, the first player to win five games wins.
  • Once official rankings are established, you are not allowed to challenge a player who is eight or more places ahead of or behind you.
  • You may not challenge the same player twice in a row or more than 2 times in a span of 5 fights. This is so that you fight various people and also so that nobody can farm weaker players for points. The exception to this rule is if the champion loses their title and wants a rematch. Exception to the exception is if they have already reached the requisite number of title defenses to unlock a secret.
  • You are allowed to decline any challenge you wish without penalty. Exception: the champion must take any challenge if the challenger is eligible to have a title match. If they do not have enough points for this, the champion may decline. Remember, you must respond within three days or else it's a forfeit.
  • We're going to need some more information now when you guys report scores, because we want to establish a deep stat-tracking system and without your help, this cannot happen. We need the following from you when reporting a match result: *- The scores of each set, just like before. Example: 4-0, 4-2. *- What character(s) you and your opponent used for each game, and who won each game. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT IS TIED TO SOMETHING THAT CAN AWARD YOU BONUS POINTS. Obviously if you're reporting a mirror match, this isn't necessary. Just let me know which character you're reporting for. *- Also let m0s3ph know next to each game's result if any sort of finishing move was performed. Please specify whether it was fatality 1, fatality 2, a stage fatality, or a babality. Why, you may ask? A handsome reward can be yours if certain conditions are met.
  • Disputes will be handled by m0s3ph, jack4813, and [Killswitch].
  • These rules are subject to modification at any time, and without notice. No grandfather clause, either.
  • Finally, amongst all these rules and regulations that m0s3ph is trying to enforce, the most important one that he has to stress is... just have fun with this, okay?

Also packaged with him in the Sideshow Toy Exclusive is an exclusive aternate head featuring his Flaming Skull. Scorpion is limited to 700 pieces worldwide and comes with a certificate of it's authenticity. You can pre-order Scorpion for $314.99 through Pop Shock directly or via Sideshow Toys which are carrying the exclusive variant.

This week, myself and queve caught up with the President of PCSC himself to discuss why he had to have Mortal Kombat in his arsenal of products, what he hopes to achieve and the in's and out of the development process and more!

[MKO] 1) Please tell us about yourselves and what was the reason that inspired you to acquire the Mortal Kombat license? Why Mortal Kombat? [Jerry] Pop Culture Shock Collectibles has been around for close to four years now and we specialize in high end, limited edition, collectibles. My philosophy is to only make items I myself think are cool and would want to own. Mortal Kombat is definitely cool, iconic and most importantly, has some of the greatest character design in video games. It was always at the top of my list of licenses I wanted to aquire. In fact, I first approached Midway over 5 years ago to try and get the rights.

2) Can you tell us a bit about the decisions and the design process that takes place when sculpting and creating your statues? The design process begins with a combination of objectives. First, we would like to create the character in an iconic pose. Something they are well recognized doing. Secondly, we want to have it be dynamic and interesting in three dimensions, lastly we want to do something original and not a pose that other companies may have used for their products. One of the trickier aspects of designing these pieces is coming up with an exclusive variant. Its not always easy to find an idea that is cool and cost effective. As far as sculpting, I only use the best sculptors and I always select a sculptor that is not only talented, but loves the source material. Alterton, who is sculpting the Mortal Kombat ? scale line for me, is a huge Mortal Kombat fan.

3) Mortal Kombat has always been praised for its memorable and deep storyline, often referred as the "best and most complex story" in any fighting video game. What is it about the story of the Universe of Mortal Kombat that Pop Culture Shock Collectibles appreciates the most? My favorite part is the unique variety of characters. Everything from ninjas to giant four armed behemoths. Its an incredible playground for someone like myself.

4) Tell us more about the beloved iconic characters that will be immortalized through your statues collection. Can fans expect to see famous MK icons such as: Shao Kahn, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Raiden, Mileena, Goro, and Shang Tsung, among others? Can you confirm some names? All of those mentioned will be made over the next few years. Two of them are scheduled to be the second and third releases and are already being sculpted.

5) Besides the famous iconic characters that most people know, there are also very popular and significant names in the MK Universe. Should fans also expect the inclusion of fan-favorites such as Ermac, Sindel, Sektor, Kabal, Stryker, Jade, Jax, Kano, Cyrax, Rain, Smoke, and Nightwolf, among others? We are going to judge the sales of the first two characters before determining if it is financially feasible to pick from some of the characters who are slightly less iconic. We need to sell 300 pcs to justify the cost of development and production. But I have to say the design of some of those mentioned above, particularly Kano and Jax, really appeal to me.

6) Does your Mortal Kombat license exclusively cover characters and costumes designs from the latest Mortal Kombat (2011) video game? Or will it also feature the various characters and costume designs from the other games such as Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Deception, MK4, and even the MKvsDC Universe game? My license not only covers all of the games but it includes other types of products. In fact, we are already developing a new line based on the classic costumes.

7) Can we expect to see character busts along side your line of full statues? No busts. I prefer to focus on full figures at this time.

8) The MK female characters have an extremely vocal, big, and ardent fan-community, however, there's been very little of them in terms of merchandize and they've been constantly limited to just a few products. MK fans have always been disappointed about this particular issue. Can the community feel reassured that Pop Culture Shock Collectibles will definitely tackle the ladies of MK? Whats amazing is how little MK merchandize there has been in general. And an emphatic YES to doing the women of Mortal Kombat. In fact the third release will be a female character.

9) What is your opinion on the female characters that will get their chance to be immortalized in your incredible statues and/or busts (Sonya Blade, Mileena, Jade, Kitana, Sindel, Sheeva….)? As a designer and sculptor I have to say that a Sheeva statue would be awesome. It would be the centerpiece of a collection....but she wont be the first female character we do. I cant say yet who that will be , but she is already being sculpted.

10) Like Scorpion's spear and Sub-Zero's ice, all of the characters posses a variety of iconic and recognizable special powers and moves. Can fans expect to see the other character statues featuring their popular trademark powers and weapons? For example: Sonya with her Energy Rings or/and Kisses of Death? Shang Tsung and his power over stolen souls? Johnny Cage's Nut Punch or Shadow Kick? Kitana and her famous steel-fans weapon? How will you decide what to feature in each one of their sculpts? Yes, every statue will feature the character using an iconic power or weapon. Deciding which one to use goes back to an earlier answer. Its not always easy making these decisions.

11) How does Pop Culture Shock Collectibles decide on the characters' poses and iconic powers to keep all of their statues designs looking unique and memorable? Will all the characters have different special bases designs like Scorpion's "hell base" in his statue? Designing the bases is one of my favorite things to do. I think this is one of the things that separates us from the competition. Hyper-detailed bases representing key stages for the individual character. Its something I put a lot of thought into. So yes, all the characters will have unique bases.

12) How will you ultimately decide which costumes to use for the MK characters' final design? In MK(2011) some of them feature very popular Alternate designs while others have more popular Primary designs. For example: Noob Saibot's Primary (with his hood and goth-like design) and Sonya's Alternate (with her hat, shorts, boots, and aviators). Generally speaking we are sticking to the standard costumes from MK 9 for the line that begins with Scorpion. However, for the Classic line we may be bouncing around from game to game.

13) Will there be more than one statue and/or busts for certain male and female characters? Will they feature different and alternative costume designs? For example: An MK(2011) Ermac's alternate costume statue and his MK: Deception Primary costume as a bust? We will certainly revisit characters in the new Klassic line, so while he wont be first, fans and collectors can certainly expect to see a Scorpion in a classic costume down the road.

14) Can you tell us when and exactly how often are we to expect the release of your MK character statues? We got off to a slow start because of some hiccups in China but now we are really moving along and we should be showing a new statue every 2 months. Some may be MK 9 and some may be Klassic. We are going to mix it up.

15) Mortal Kombat fans are well known for being very passionate and vocal about their beloved franchise. Do you take into serious consideration the fans' opinions and suggestions? How valued are the opinions of the fans to Pop Culture Shock Collectibles? One of the main philosophies behind this company is fan interaction. I want to hear the input. I am not perfect and I make mistakes. If the fans dont like what we are doing I want to hear it and whenever possible we will change our course. For example, fans were pretty vocal that they wanted a variant skull head for our new Scorpion statue that did not have flames. As you can see in the attached image we listened and we are making that head and it will now come with the Sideshow Exclusive version of Scorpion for NO extra cost. Without the fans we are nothing. Any company that doesnt realize their customers are the reason they are in business is destined to go out of business.

16) How can the fans forward to you their thoughts, opinions and requests concerning your Mortal Kombat statues line? Email would become overwhelming. We do have a facebook page and I read every post/comment on it. Just search on Facebook for Pop Culture Shock Collectibles Inc

17) How are you aiming to please such a diverse crowd? What makes some suggestions and requests more agreeable to implement than some others? Its tough to please everyone. In fact, its impossible. All I can do is take in all the information and try to please what the majority are asking for.

18) Can we expect to see MK Dioramas featuring important and classic MK-story moments and rivalries such as: Motaro VS Sheeva, Kung Lao VS Goro, Sonya Blade VS Kano, Sektor VS Cyrax, Mileena VS Kitana, Nightwolf VS Sindel, Liu Kang VS Shang Tsung, etc? Its definitely being discussed.

19) Are there any plans on creating "Tag-Team" statues/dioramas that bring together iconic alliances such as: Shao Kahn and Sindel (Outworld Rulers), Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade (Lovers and only survivors), Shang Tsung and Quan Chi (Deadly Alliance), Cyrax and Sektor and Smoke (Lin Kuei), Raiden and Fujin (Protectors of Earth), Jade and Kitana (loyal friends), Liu Kang, Sonya, and Johnny (the original "Chosen Ones"), Stryker and Kabal (Police Partners), Jax and Sonya (Special Forces), Quan Chi and Shinnok (Netherealm team), Mileena and Shao Kahn ("daughter" and father), Kung Lao and Liu Kang (Shaolin Monks), Jade, Mileena, and Kitana (Kahn's Assasins), etc? This would fall into the potential dioramas. Possibly at a smaller scale than the current 1:4. I do think it is a great idea.

20) The Universe of MK is also about beautifully detailed arenas and worlds. Are there any plans on bridging to life famous MK arenas/worlds? Even for Dioramas or for character bases? For example: The living Forest, Tsung's Throne room, The Wastelands, Evil Monastery, Kahn's Colliseum, Edenia, The Pit, Wu Shi-Academy, Courtyard, Warrior Shrine, Outworld, etc. I cant say that idea has been discussed but it is interesting. The stages/worlds are pretty amazing. I guess we will see how it goes.

21) Is there anything else in particular that you would like to add and say to your fans? Id like to thank everyone for the overwhelmingly positive response we have from the Scorpion reveal at San Diego Comic Con. A lot of work went into the statue and it was great to see the fans appreciated it. Its been a massive success so far and I look forward to continuing the line for a long time to come.

Thanks so much for your time, Jerry! Us at MKO and the community as a whole can't wait to see what you manage to come up with and rest assured you have our full support!

Mortal Kombat 2011 Sells Close to 3 Million Copies!

Gamespot has posted an article reporting Mortal Kombat's (2011) huge financial success.

The gaming website states that Nether Realm Studio's latest installment has now sold "close to" 3 million copies all around the world. From their article:

"…the success of the game has already paid for WBIE's costs acquiring the Mortal Kombat series' bankrupt original publisher, Midway. WBIE picked up the bulk of Midway's operations and intellectual property in 2009 for a final cost of $49 million"

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president, Martin Tremblay, spoke in an interview with MCV about Mortal Kombat's success. From the interview:

"We are pleased with the success of Mortal Kombat so far. With the launch of Mortal Kombat, we have already paid for the acquisition of the Midway assists, and we are just beginning to leverage this acquisition with much more to come"

Another positive note that is worth to remember: Mortal Kombat has also made the NPD Group's monthly US retail best sellers chart for four months running.

This is wonderful news for all the Mortal Kombat fans around the world. We would like to congratulate NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. for their well deserved success!

Special thanks to our forum member Kabal20 for the heads-up on this article!

""Characters like Sonya, Ermac, Skarlet, Johnny Cage, Sindel, Reptile, Sektor, Baraka, Noob Saibot and Kung Lao are currently in the pipeline with the rest of the Roster expected to follow!"

This week, myself and queve engaged in conversation with Syco Collectibles Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mikael Wallman. We get down to business and discuss upcoming statues, the process behind the sculpting and why they are so passionate about Mortal Kombat!:

(MKO) 1) Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves and what was the inspiration that moved you to acquire the Mortal Kombat license? Why Mortal Kombat? We are a Swedish/UK company who shares a strong passion for collectibles and video games. Mortal Kombat has been a personal favourite of ours for a long time and was our first choice in terms of licenses and we are absolutely delighted that we were able to sign a deal with Warner Bros.

2) Syco Collectibles is very well known and respected for the high quality work of its products. Can you tell us a bit about the decisions and the design process that takes place when sculpting and creating your collectibles? Thank you! Well, after deciding upon which character we are going to do, we go through various options for poses with our sculptor, based upon the reference that we are given by WB and from playing the game and looking at some of the key poses of that character. We then have regular get-togethers to discuss possible changes or amendments to the sculpt. Once the clay sculpt sample is finished and approved by WB we will go to the next step, which is first to make a grey sample followed by what we call a Paint master, which is 90% accurate to what the final product will look like. Once the Paint Master is approved by WB, it is at this point we will put it up on the website for Pre-Orders. We then work with the factory on the Pre-Production sample, which will include all the features, such as lights etc. Once we have approved this we have to send the Pre Production sample to WB for final approval. As soon as we get this along with the final orders we hit production!

3) Awesome stuff, Mikael. Mortal Kombat has always been praised for its memorable and deep storyline, often referred as the "best and most complex story" in any fighting video game. What is it about the story of the Universe of Mortal Kombat that SycoCollectibles appreciate the most? The fact that the MK story is complex makes the game so much more appealing and interesting. Since each character has a distinct story to them, the fans get a wider variety of cool and electrifying characters to choose from! I also believe that the people behind the latest game have done a very good job in making the story mode attractive to both the experienced MK gamers as well as the players enjoying the game for the first time.

4) Tell us a little bit more about the famous characters that will be immortalized through your statues collection: Raiden, Mileena, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Liu Kang, Shao Kahn and Reptile. Can you tell us what are the important points that were taken into consideration when choosing and deciding for these particular characters? Our release schedule is not yet finished but the characters mentioned will definitely be made at some stage. The first thing that needs to be taken into consideration is whether the particular character has a following or not. We might like a particular character but if he or she is not that popular among the thousands of MK fans out there then there’s no point making that character a priority.

5) Can you give us a few hints and clues as to what characters to expect in the future MortalKombat(2011) line? Can fans be assured of the inclusion of fan-favorite names such as Ermac, Sindel, Kabal, Stryker, Jade, Jax, Kano, Shang Tsung, Smoke, Nightwolf, Nitara, and Baraka among others? We will try our very best to do as many characters as we possibly can over our licence period. Without revealing too much I can tell you that names such as Sindel, Sonya Blade, Goro, Baraka, Noob Saibot will eventually be made but there is room for more and the fans will have a big say in what we come out with by voting in future polls etc.

6) The MK female characters have an extremely vocal, big, and ardent fan-community, however, there's been very little of them in terms of merchandize and they've been constantly limited to just a few products. MK fans have always been disappointed about this particular issue. Can the community feel reassured that SycoCollectibles will definitely tackle the ladies of MK? Absolutely! The girls of MK are simply too stunning and cool to not be immortalized in stone, so we are planning to do as many as we can!

7) Can you tell us your opinion on the female characters that will get their chance to be immortalized in your incredible statues and busts (Mileena, Sonya Blade, Jade, Kitana…anyone else)? Again, there are so many fans out there who would like to see different female characters sculpted but I believe most people would be disappointed if Mileena, Kitana and Sonya Blade didn’t feature in all their glamour.

8) Like Scorpion's spear and Sub-Zero's ice, all of the female characters posses a variety of iconic and recognizable special powers and moves. Can fans expect to see their statues featuring their popular trademark powers? For example: Sonya with her Energy Rings or/and Kisses of Death? Sindel with her sonic scream and/or her famous super long hair? How will you decide what to feature in their sculpts? Popular trademark powers and poses is a constant debate in the office and we have received many great suggestions from a lot of MK fans. Of course we want to please the MK fans by being very creative regarding this but we also have to be realistic about what is possible and what is not as we don’t want to compromise on quality or the look of the final product. However, rest assured that we will try our very best!

9) How will you ultimately decide which costumes to use for the MK characters' final design? In MK(2011) some of them feature very popular Alternate designs while others have more popular Primary designs. For example: Jade's Primary (with her mask and golden chains) and Sonya's Alternate (with her hat, shorts, boots, and aviators). This is also a tricky one and something that the fans out there are commenting on a great deal. We will again try and listen to what the fans have to say and for characters with two different cool outfits we might make two statues where one is a more exclusive version.

10) Can you tell us more about your "Klassic's Mortal Kombat" line? Does it cover characters from MK1 through MK4? If so, can we also expect to see the MK: Deadly Alliance and Deception characters and their costumes designs as part of the collectible statues (such as: Reiko, Tanya, Li Mei, Havik, Hotaru, Ashrah, Kenshi, Mavado, Frost, Nitara, etc)? Our license covers MK1, MK2, MK3 and MK9 so you can definitely expect something Klassic in the future. What we will do for klassics will most likely be up to the fans on our different social network sites to decide, providing we get approval from WB off course.

11) How do you plan to keep your different character statues distinctive and memorable? Will some characters be featured in iconic poses? Will others feature trademark special powers or accessories? Will all have special base designs? You will certainly see Iconic poses no doubt about it! We will do our best to have some trademark special powers in some of the statues as well. Accessories however are not included in our licence but if there is a great demand for them we could possibly have that added. Concerning bases all 18 inch bases will be the same whereas the 10” bases will vary in colour though the base design will stay the same. As for the 1:2 Scale Busts the logos on the base will differ depending on what character we do. There will be a few different designed bases for some of the exclusive stuff and dioramas that we’re planning to do.

12) Can we expect to see more than one statue and/or busts for certain male and female characters? Will they feature different and alternative costume designs? For example: An MK(2011) Ermac's alternate costume statue and his Primary costume as a bust. Or an MK:Deadly Alliance Li Mei Primary and her MK:Deception armor alternate costume? We like the sound of that and it is certainly a possibility as long as there’s enough interest out there!

13) Will some of the female characters also be featured in your "Klassic Mortal Kombat" line? For example: Kitana's MK2 retro costume with her iconic steel-fans, Jade's retro MK3 costume, Mileena's famous MK:Deception costume with her veil, Sonya's MK4 Special Forces costume, etc? We will most likely do a ‘complete’ poll regarding the “Klassic stuff” where fans can vote not only for a character but also for costumes and poses etc.

14) Can you tell us when and exactly how often are we to expect the release of your MK character statues? Our plan is to release one statue a month with the exception of a few months a year when we will release two (for example our very first two 10” statues Sub Zero & Scorpion). The plan is to ship at the end of the month but this could change due increased production time etc. We realise that by doing it this way some fans will have to wait a long time for their favourite character to come out but since there are people out there who would like to collect the entire range we need to have a release schedule that is suited to all wallets.

15) Mortal Kombat fans are well known for being very passionate and vocal about their beloved franchise and you've shown us that you are very active and communicative with your fans through Facebook and Twitter. Do you take into serious consideration the fans' opinions and suggestions? How valued are the opinions of the fans to SycoCollectibles? Since we believe that the fans are the true experts we take all suggestions and opinions very seriously. Therefore we always encourage all MK fans out there to keep the ideas coming! As you know we recently ran a poll for our next 18” premium statue and there will be more similar polls in the future for the fans.

16) Considering the large number of requests that you probably receive from all the MK fans: how are you aiming to please such a diverse crowd? What makes some suggestions and requests more agreeable to implement than some others? Good question! We have gotten all sorts of interesting, clever and very funny requests on yours and different forums and it’s great to see how passionate people are about their favourite characters, poses, settings etc. We are very fortunate to have a brilliant sculptor in Mason Cheng but there are sadly not many of him out there and since we don’t want to compromise on quality, things will take time, which means it will be very difficult to do everything that people ask us to do.

17) We can definitely appreciate that fact! Can we expect to see MK Dioramas featuring important and classic MK-story moments and rivalries such as: Motaro VS Sheeva, Kung Lao VS Goro, Sektor VS Cyrax, Sonya Blade VS Kano, Mileena VS Kitana, Nightwolf VS Sindel, etc? A diorama will definitely be made at some point. This is something that we discussed from the very start and we believe that MK dioramas would look awesome! Making a diorama is however very time consuming so we have to make sure that whatever we choose to do is what a lot of fans would like to see!

18) The Universe of MK is also about beautifully detailed arenas and worlds. Are there any plans on sculpting famous MK arenas/worlds for Dioramas or for character bases? For example: The living Forest, Tsung's Throne room, The Wastelands, Evil Monastery, Kahn's Colliseum, Edenia, The Pit, Wu Shi-Academy, Courtyard, Warrior Shrine, Outworld, etc? Absolutely! We also think that an MK arena would look amazing in a diorama so this is definitely in the plans. The headache will be to pick the best ones!

19) Agreed! So are there any plans on creating "Tag-Team" statues that bring together iconic alliances such as: Shao Kahn and Sindel (Outworld Rulers), Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade (Lovers and only survivors), Shang Tsung and Quan Chi (Deadly Alliance), Cyrax and Sektor and Smoke (Lin Kuei), Raiden and Fujin (Protectors of Earth), etc? YES! A cool Tag-Team diorama is a must! Again the hard part will be deciding which one to go for but I’m sure all the good people in the MK community will give us some great suggestions!

) What are the chances of seeing special-mini sculptures dedicated to popular MK objects such as: Shinnok's amulet, Sub-Zero's Lin Keu Medallion, Shao Kahn's throne, characters masks and iconic weapons, an MK bible, the Special Forces ID's, etc? Unfortunately the license we have doesn’t include this but we can try and get it added if this is something that people would definitely order!

21) Let's hope the demand is there (which we believe it is) - Is there anything else in particular you would like to add or say to your fans? Thanks a lot for the brilliant support, feedback and suggestions we have received so far! Without you guys this wouldn’t be possible so we take our hats off and bow. Also a big thanks to Mortal Kombat Online for your fantastic support and encouragement from day one!

You're very welcome! Thanks so much for your time, Mikael; and remember. Mortal Kombat Online is right behind you and we are very excited to see what you come up with in the near future!

"Go make your Votes count on Mortal Kombat's Nomination Page!"

The latest iteration of Mortal Kombat has already recieved tremendous critical acclaim as well as being the biggest selling game of April 2011 and one of the biggest sellers of the year thus far! In other superlatives, Mortal Kombat appeared at EVO 2011 and won the respect and audience, proving itself tournament worthy! The game has also been supported by Downloadable Content in the form of additional Characters and Costumes, which too has been met with positive reaction! It stands as one of the few opportunities outside of tradeshows like E3 and GamesCom for the vibrant industry to get together under one roof to celebrate and recognize the year’s greatest gaming achievements."

The GamesMaster Golden Joystick Awards 2011 Ceremony takes place on October 21st at the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza in the United Kingdom so be sure to cast your vote and spread the word!
