1 button Fatality problem (MK Trilogy for PS)

Why is it that sometimes, when you have the 1 button Fatality code on, it sometimes doesn't work and the only way to finish the opponent is an elbow to the face or just wait. Can somebody tell me what the problem is?

You're pressing a the directional pad. You don't have to press it, just press the "R" buttons, or the control pad buttons. Pressing the directional pad will cancel out the code for that match.
