I was a youngster so I wasn't even thinking about that. But if I were to go back in time and place the current me where the younger me was.I would probably think maybe but it won't happen. Why do I say that?:
MK1 was REAL popular and alot of people thought it couldn't get any better. Then MK2 hit, thats when alot of people changed there minds.Plus then I didn't know MK had a STRONG group of fans.I found that out when MK2 came. After that I just kept thinking it'll get bigger and bigger as time goes on.

This is my local story:
MK was the biggest when MK2 was out...it started to fall slowly around MK3, but was rekindled with UMK3 for awhile. The die-hard fans stuck around though, the ones who really enjoyed MK3's fighting engine. MK4 was popular for a few months, but died out very quickly and ended MK's glory days in the arcade.
Indeed, MK was rejuvenated by Deadly Alliance...and is going to be revolutionalized by Deception.
Long live MK.

I dont think mk will ever be as popular as it was back in the day the last great mk was mk3. Although i do like umk3 and mkt.It will never be the same like it use to be going to the arcades and playing mk1-3 those moments where priceless.Mk became to mainstream and to cartoony after the movies,cartoon,ect..Mk going 3-d was the final blow its more like a kiddie game now.
I honestly didn't expect Mortal Kombat to be this big. I was hooked on that game and I dreaded the day when Mortal Kombat burned out. I thought it was all over when Mortal Kombat Trilogy came out. I thought wrong, Mortal Kombat is not quite big as it was but I believe it could get there with the new game.

I didn't expect it, I was sure at the time that MK3 was going to be the final MK game.
thank god that MK4-5-6 were created and I hope it will continue

Absolutely not, when MK1 came out, thats all anyone talked about, and when it was starting to die down, thats when MK2 came out, and became even bigger. All the MK's after that never got the attention. And when MK went 3D thats when it all died down.
EDIT: I read the question wrong, to answer your question, I thought MK was over after MK3, then they kept on popping out more, but I dont think that MK is big anymore.
