I first remember them being in mortal kombat trilogy and the snes/genesis versions of umk3.

I checked faqs and didn't find a listing for brutality in the arcade version with the exception of an emulation. Does anybody remember them being in the stand up version?

there were no brutalities in the any of the arcade versions. they were just thrown in randomly in the snes/genesis versions of ultimate and were made for trilogy.

it wasnt necessarlry a randomly reason for brutalities being in the snes and genesis version of umk3. the short and simple answer is because midway needed to compensate for the losses those said versions were going to have.

Yeah i figure it was an easy way of adding something without really taking up any space on the cartridge. Then for Trilogy, it is a simple matter to add them for everyone, even all the old people, since it requires no extra graphics whatsoever. In short it was a simple way for them to "add" something without really doing anything.

very well put busta. grin. thats why they took the animalities out in the 16-bit umk3's. and it was also another way to make it different from the saturn version since sega had somehow got exclusive rights to the arcade port of umk3.

Never had the console version, so I didn't even realize that the animalities were removed! But I can understand why they did it, since they needed to cut corners as much as possible to fit stuff in. Someone pointed out here a while ago that they doubled up the graphics for Liu Kang's MK Machine fatality and Nightwolf's MKII machine friendship; i forget which machine they used, but they dropped the same one for both finishers. When it came to the cartridges, they were desparate for space. So for animalities you need all the animal graphics in there, but Brutalities just need some basic coding and that's it (plus the "brutality" logo graphic)... so by "trading" brutalities for animalities I guess they got a decent amount of extra space to work with. Normal MK3 was already pushing the limits of cartridge space, so i guess they had to no choice but to remove some more graphics to compensate. And of course they took out the graphics for Sheeva as well (plus the graveyard stage, I think). And they were always cutting corners on the sound effects... even N64 trilogy had to double up a lot of sound effects to conserve space.

for the arcade and 32-bit mk3 and umk3 games they used mk1 for liu kang and mk2 for nightwolf. on all 16-bit versions of mk3 and umk3 they used the mk2 machine for liu kang and nightwolf. graveyard was missing in mk3 and umk3, with mk3 taking out even more stages. there's more but i think the snes umk3 had more stages taken out than the genesis version. but the mk3 games was only missing the graveyard.

And they left out the classic versions of kano, raiden, jax, and kung lao, and they took out MK3 sub from N64. Further reason why that version is crap.

the only thing MKT N64 Was good for was Khameleon. she at least is a part of the story now unlike here male counterpart. But regardless PS version is better.

MK2KungBroken and I were playing some UMK3 last night and it would have been cool to make custom brutalities, like if you get enough hits after you kill them they explode and you get the brutality graphic.

That's a cool idea. I'd actually attempt a Brutality then. As it is, I've never bothered with them because I thought it was too much memorization and not enough payoff. I'm afraid that if I bother to learn those 10-hit autocombos, it will push something useful out of my brain.

lmao. the only brutalities i know by heart is rain's and noob's. but thats because i dont think they had fatalities in the 16-bit umk3's. i dont know any others. i had the genesis umk3 before i even got trilogy on saturn. for some reason i dont really care too much for the ps1 version even tho it has overall better gameplay.

well i dont think this thread asked about which versions of mk u have but ok. i never did get umk3 on saturn (i did rent it a few times tho) but i got trilogy on saturn. the brutalities was a nice idea and i think that if they were to bring them back it should be set up to where u gotta do something like a 10-hit combo in order for it to be done. it was good thinking on midway's part to use the brutalities to save space and compensate for the lack of animalities. does anyone think it was a good idea to take out the animalities and put in the brutalities for snes and genesis umk3?

Actually, each Brutality is 11 hits.
I never liked the Brutalities, they were too much of a rip on KI. Also I could've swore I've done Animalities in the SNES UMK3. Doesn't matter though, I don't really care for the Animalities either.

UMK3 for SNES, Genesis, and Saturn and MKT for Saturn are a few of the things that should never have existed.

Brutalities are in the arcade version of UMK3. I've played it in the last year so I remember well.

Don't lie. They are not in the arcade version.
