Ok, here is the dealeo... MK3 took out most of the favortie characters... mainly the ninjas. Scorpion was gone and that was a biggie. I liked MK3 a lot when it came out and I rented it at least four times and played it in the arcades every chance I got. Then UMK3 came out and my favorite, Scorpion, was back along with others that were missing and new pallete swap Ermac. Now Trilogy added to this, but no one has addressed Trilogy yet here, so I will. I like Trilogy a lot more than MK4. I like UMK3 as much as MK4 and MK3 slightly less than MK4.
I played MK4 when it cam out before Jax, Rieko, and who ever the other person in the midle three boxes were. Might of been Cage. Anyway, I loved the addition of the weapon combat and stage projectiles. The fatalities were better in MK4 in some aspects. They got rid of a lot of the sillier fatalities, and got some classic ones to go 3-D.
The run button was to to fast for some, but I think the speed it what could make this game so intense. Ok, yes the characters didn't move like their size and weight would suggest and the heights didn't differ which was cheap. But it was easier to learn and really fast, the classic moves were implemented good into 3-D. PLus Scorpion's toasty move was useful and cool and not just another projectile, but a limited projectile. PLus the prison fatality rocked.
One down side is the characters. A lot of useful space was wasted on useless characters. Jarek would be one, though useful in fighting, they should of just put Kano in there. Tanya/Kitana the same. Reiko/Noob Saibot the same. Or just take out Jarek, take Reiko's teleslam away give Noob Saibot his ghost ball move and teleport and give reiko some new moves along with his ninja star move...
Another downside to MK4 is no boss character... Shinnok did not measure up at all... Goro was okay on the home versions or Gold, but Shinnok was a huge disappointment if you play MKM:S-Z and see him in action...
So comparing MK3 to MK4, I personally think MK4 is more fun to play. UMK3 evens out due to it being really hard on the arcade and Jade always has her way with me... ok UMK3 might be up on MK4 do to it having more characters that are worth a shit... but if I ever get the unglitched version of MK Gold, I'll enjoy that as much as UMK3, but not quite as much as MK Trilogy... later

I like MK3 alot more than MK4 for 2 reasons:
The atmosphere in MK3 was good
There is more variety in MK3 than MK4.
MK4 is okay but it was rushed.Personally I think MK4 was going to be 2D.

That's kind of like asking, what would you prefer to eat, a piece of cantelop, or a piece of feces..
that was 1 of the funnest posts ever.lol but both mk3 and mk4 make me puke in my mouth.lolol i get soo bored playing them after like 15 mins.. mk2 i can play all nite and still be in to it.. which i do play mk2 every day all day..
but to choose between mk 4 gold and mk trilogy.. i would have to say mk trilogy.. mk 4 introduced great characters..but the game play was extremly bad it felt like the mk team was smoking crack while creating it... they were on speed creating mk3 lololololol
