I prefer the old school layout. I mean the style in mkda was ok, but it just doesn't feel like mortal kombat. I remember the first time playing deadly alliance I was disappointed.I know mk6 will probably have something new, but Im so used to the (HP,LP) style that was in the old mk's.

Using that old style would make MK not be able to compete with the likes of other fighters. How much depth can I game using that style possibly have? To me, it gets old after awhile, and seriously damages the replay value of the game. The team has finally decided to focus on the gameplay, which I am for one am very thankful for.

Ok, allow me to elaborate further. In the older MK games, each character was limited to the same set of moves, outside of combos. The same looking punch, kick, etc. But in MKDA there are three fighting styles, for each character to choose from, making the gameplay alot more interesting to view. Now we have not only combos and special moves that differ from each character, we have actual kicks and punches as well. Though, I would like to see some variety in the aerial attacks next. Don't misunderstand though, I've always loved MK, but I just think its time to move on to bigger and better things when it comes to the fighting system.

It doesn't matter to me. I'll adapt. I have been since I have been 8 years old. I liked the old layout and all. I also like the new layout as well. To me there is nothing wrong with either ones. If the MK team changes the layout again, I bet it will be cool, laterzzzzzz

no, cause with that layout, all characters had the same moves and the only thing that made them different was their specials...so, no.

The old 2-D style made the old games much funner than the tekken-style in MKDA. I haven't played MKDA is god knows how long, while I play Mortal Kombat Trilogy like 4 times a week.

im one not to care what configuration they put in, maybe they should have an option to switch to the old style to appease both gamers.

I prefer the old layout, it fits your hand so perfectly. You could put the buttons just a little closer together, make the Run button Change Stance, and put the SM button just right of HK or above Block so your long ass middle finger can hit it with ease.

Perfect!

I'm getting my X Arcade today...what layout do you use Konqrr???

MKDA
VF4
Tekken
SC2

also I imagine that a forward dash like VF4, etc. Is better than run for MKDA.

I like the old layout as well. Each characters normals do not have to have the same properties. Look at TT, Juns standing 2 launched o_O. In MvC2 the normals are quite different for each of the characters, as well. So the argument that the old system created stale/rehashed attacks is irrelevant. Other games have addressed the issue of normals effectively. There is no reason why MK cannot do the same if the old system were to be adopted back.

Personally, the old system just made more sense to me. Anywho, Ray, get that dash feature in there for us, mmmm k.

Psst, don't forget about the oki, either. - gives thumbs up.

Ray, Here's my X-Arcade layout for MKDA:

1,2,CS (go TTT!)
3,4,SM
BLK,Unused

It took me awhile to get used to, but now it works great. I still prefer the old layout though.

And like Satyagraha said...Ray, you need to make sure that Okizeme and Throw escapes are in MK6!! Groud attacks and a variety of get up moves (roll f/b/u/d, attack low/high, get up no attack) are essential to fighting games now.

I liked the old layout. But this layout works just as good. A style with all kicks wouldn't make much sense using a HP button.

It doesn't have to be HP,HK...etc.

In a game like MKDA, they would be referred to as 1,2 respectively.

Yeah...thats the setup I'm gonna use. I was thinking about it last night playing SC2. I like guard accessible with my thumb.

The X-arcade is great! Best investment in a minute.
Kudos konqrr.

so lots of good games in the last few weeks. Bought them all.

Silent Hill 3
Alter Echo
Chaos Legion
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
Soul Caliber 2
Pokemon pinball
F-Zero

there where more games to get, but I couldn't afford all of em!

Don't worry about 6 guys...it's a long way off.

I haven't talked to Ed lately. I'm really trying hard to make ESP as good as it can be. Concentrating on the task at hand, building my rep. as a designer.

I've been intentionally staying away from 6 because when I do get my hands on it. I want it to be fresh. I want to take in the whole experience so that I can give Ed the most honest and objective opinion I can.

Fresh eyes are extremely important. Because if you stare at or play a game for too long, you just lose all sight of what is really good and what is crap.

I'm doing my research too!

VF4
SC2
Street Fighter
Tekken
DOA

I'm playin them all...I've learned so much in the past year guys. I've been at Midway a year now and I couldn't ask for more...
I'm getting a really good idea of how to do design. The job I do is coming up with gameplay systems and features and defining them. Designing the levels of ESP and almost all facets of gameplay. I spent alot of time on camera and controls and really just trying to nail down good ergonomics, simplicity AND fun.

Believe me guys I mentioned almost everything you guys wanted at the end of MKDA. Me and Ed sat down and had that talk. I gave him my wishlist for 6...

look at it like this guys...
I have over ten years experience with MK
I worked on DA
I know the whole MK team...seemingly in good standing
I have a year under my belt already...
when ESP is done I will have a year experience as a designer.
Things are gonna be fine guys I wouldn't worry about it.

Thank you too. You gave lots of good information there even though it was just your opinion. It's good to know our ideas, suggestions, complaints, and everything inbetween will get noticed. Like you said, keep an open mind going into 6 and don't just be a "yes" man for the team (easy for me to say). You get what I'm saying though. It's better to tell Ed problems fans will have with a product or sure to be complaints than to not tell him at all. Maybe he'll listen. Maybe he won't. But atleast he'll know.

So keep us informed occasionally. Even if it is just simple like "I told the team today..." or "they told me...". Pitched ideas, anything. If you can do that without getting in trouble that is. But hell, for now, you're our only source for information or possible information until they go wild with the media.

Ahhh ok. Thought it was the labels of the buttons too. Well isn't that what it basically is now? All they did was replace run with cs and added the special move button. It's pretty much the same.

Damn. Ray, I'll admit, when I first came here I thought you were an arogant son of a bitch. Then a while back I simply said to myself, "Dude, stop being such an e-tard!" I practiced a little of that peace and love that I preach. You're a pretty cool cat. I'd drink a tall, cold glass of beer with you any day.

HELL NO!

The new fighting system of MK is THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO THE GAME! I was so BORED of the old HP, LP, LK, HK, BL, RN, all characters doing the same thing, fighting the same way....there was nothing special there! But now with the awesome Real fighting styles MK has gotten so much fucking better! I love MKDA, and like Leno said, the styles is the best thing about MKDA.

Now, U can actually call it a REAL tournament, its just a very unique thing to do! I love the styles.

yeah thats one of the beauties of Twisted Fate...the HP, LP, HK, LK layout remains, but each attack is totally different with all characters. And there is no silly Run button, you just double tap (forwards AND backwards).

Well, this is the MKDA forum, and this topic refers to MKDA.
I hope your little advertisement won't cause the thread to be closed, as it is a fair question.

As for the real question at hand, I prefer the new style, the old system is so old and outdated.
I am glad they are now using the universal 1,2,3,4 system (more or less anyway).

Wow, Kazmer! It sounds so easy too! But isn't it hard to carry around with you?

Kazmer (with an australian accent) : Course not, Zenny, cause twisted-fate has the fabulous feature that lets you fit twisted-fate into almost anything! Purses, briefcases, school backpacks, you name it!

Wow Kazmer! That sounds super fantastic! But what's it gonna cost? I mean, isn't this going to turn out really expensive?

Kazmer (with an australian accent) : Course not, Zenny, course not! Cause you can take the whole set, the whole twisted-fate kit...for 300 dollars!

C'mon Kazmer, you can do better then that!!!

Kazmer (with an australian accent) : Aright then Zenny...what about... 50 dollars and 49 cents!

Whoa Kazmer! That's a super fantastic price!
