I think some of the fighting styles in MKDA didn't fit the characters that used them, while others fit very well. I'll make a list of all the characters and their styles (hand to hand only; too lazy to do weapons) and whether or not, IMO, they fit, and why.
Shang Tsung-
Snake- Excellent fit. Very symbolic of his debvious personality.
Crane- No. I don't think it fit him at all; it probably would have been better for a good guy.
Bo Rai Cho-
Drunken Fist- Perfect fit, obviously. BRC is one of the rare MK characters that seems to be designed to fit a specific style.
Mi Zong- Meh. Decent fit, but it's hard to give a second style to a character that seems to be based on a specific one.
Quan Chi-
Tang Soo Do- It seemed like a pretty good fit, IMO. It just looks right
Escrima- Again, it seemed to fit pretty well.
Li Mei-
Baji Quan- With a new character like this, it's hard to say. Classic characters will already have a unique feel to them that their style will either fit or not, but new characters are more likely to be defined by their style.
Lui He Ba Fa- Same as above. As a rather obscure style, like Baji Quan, the character will define the style to the unfamiliar as much as the style will define the character.
Scorpion-
Hapkido- It fit pretty well, except as a ninja you'd think he'd use ninjitsu.
Pi Gua- Didn't fit too well. This is a more powerful style, not too fitting for a swift, precise ninja like Scorp.
Sonya-
Kenpo- It fit pretty well, except I would expect such a familiar character to use a more familiar style.
Tae Kwon Do- Good fit. Familiar style for a familiar character.
Kenshi-
Tai Chi- Perfect fit. He looks like he might be blind, because he's not looking at the opponent. He also looks like he's concentrating internally, which is also fitting.
San Shou- Not so good fit. Why would a blind guy kickbox?
Mavado-
Long Fist- Good fit, but same problm as Li Mei.
Wing Chu- Poor fit. Would have been better for a good guy. Also, poorly implemented.
Johnny Cage-
Karate- Fitting. Makes sense that an actor would use such a popular style.
Jeet Kune Do- Semi-fitting, as it was developed by a martial arts actor.
Sub-Zero-
Shotokan- Looks fitting enough, but historically not so much. Why would a member of a Chinese clan use a type of Karate, a Japanese style?
Dragon- More fitting, especially with the whole "Dragon Medallion" thing in his story.
Kano-
Xing Yi- Looks fitting, but I have a feeling it's poorly represented. I see Kano as very agressive and undisciplined; why would he have an internal style?
Aikido- Same problem. Aikido is purely defensive. Not fitting.
Kung Lao-
Mantis- Meh. A mantis is a creepy insect, so it doesn't seem fitting for one of the main heroes of the game. Maybe he could trade Mavado for WIng Chun.
Shaolin Fist- Very fitting. After all, he is a Shaolin monk.
Nitara-
Leopard- Fitting, I guess. Swift and deadly.
Fu Jow Pai- I guess it fits okay.
Drahmin-
Netherealm- It should be expected that a fictional style created scpecifically for a character would fit.
Oni- Same as above.
Hsu Hao-
Shuai Chiao- Decent fit. Powerful style for a bulky character.
Wrestling- Not fitting. Hsu Hao is one of the most obviously Asian MK characters yet. Why give him a western style?
Frost-
Tong Bei- Same problem as Li Mei. Obscure style for a new character = hard to say if it fits.
Yuan Yang- Same as above.
Jax-
Muay Thai- The only reason I see it fitting at all is because when MK2 was being planned, Jax was originally intended to be a kickboxer.
Judo- Fitting for a military man; I've heard Judo is often part of US military training.
Kitana-
Eagle Claw- Fairly fitting. Graceful and elegant.
Ba Gua- Again, fairly fitting. An internal style fits well for a princess.
Raiden-
Nan Chuan- Fitting; a powerful style for the Thunder God.
Jujutsu- Another good fit. One of the oldest, most purely Japanese styles for an ancient, Japanese character.
Reptile-
Hung Gar- Kinda fitting I guess. Swift and powerful, with a fairly primal appearance.
Crab- I'm not sure if this would be considered a fictional style or not, as Crab kung fu is considered extinct. If it is considered fictional, it was a bad choice. A style called "Zaterrian" or "Saurian" would have made more sense.
Cyrax-
Ninjitsu- Not very fitting. Although he is a cyber-"ninja," he's not a true ninja because he's a Lin Kuei.
Sambo- REALLY unfitting. Why would they give a cyberninja a Soviet wrestling style?
If you read this whole thing, I think you. I don't expect any of you to make a thorough list like this, but post any opinions you have on why certain styles fit or not. Also feel free to include weapons; I'll probably make a second list specifically for weapons later.

Damn, why does nobody respond to some of my threads? I spent a good chunk of time making that list, and nobody even replies? WTF?
Well, I have more time to kill, so I'll make the weapons list.
Shang Tsung- I guess it fits him. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would fit better.
Bo Rai Cho- Pretty good fit. I don't really se Bo as a swordsman; only thing is, the Jo is Japanese, and Bo has more of a Chinese feel to him. Then again, he's from Outworld, so I guess anything goes...
Quan Chi- Sorta. I guess the fact that double broadsword is an advanced style reflects his skill in sorcery (although I did just download a VERY impressive wushu double broadsword demonstration by a kid who looked like he was 10).
Li Mei- Only fit because she's a Mileena rip-off.
Scorpion- I guess it fits pretty well.
Sonya- Not a very good fit. Why would a US special forces member use a Filipino stick fighting system?
Kenshi- Obviously a good fit. He's the only character whose story revolves around a weapon, so of course it fits.
Mavado- His weapons are the only thing I like about him. But I guess they fit okay.
Johnny Cage- Since the Nunchaku is a popular movie weapon, it fits.
Sub-Zero- As a fictional weapon, it's granted that it fits.
Kano- Well we've always seen Kano using big knives, so in that sense it fits, but the fact that the Butterfly is part of the Shaolin system makes it a little strange.
Kung Lao- Simple bu deadly weapon for the main hero = good fit.
Nitara- I guess it fits her pretty well, although I don't like how in Konquest they make up a partially fictitious history for the Kama.
Drahmin- WTF, he uses his iron club in his other styles too. But I don't know what else he'd use.
Hsu Hao- Yea, I suppose it fit him pretty well, as the sun-moon is a Chinese weapon.
Frost- Like Sub-Zero, fitting to use Kori powers to create a weapon.
Jax- I dunno, in a sense it fit, but it doesn't make much sense IMO. Like Sonya, why would a US SF member use a weapon from Okinawa?
Kitana- Obviously, it fit, as it was her trademark since MK2.
Raiden- Good fit. I read somewhere that even in MK2 they wanted to give him a staff, but didn't for some reason.
Reptile- Another fictional weapon, as it very well should, makes a good fit.
Cyrax- I'm sorry, but MK is NOT Star Wars. Leave the light sabre to Luke, Obi Wan, and all the other Jedis, and find some cool gadget to give to Cyrax for a weapon.
Come on, I hate seeing my threads die. Disagree with anything in either of my lists? Speak up!

Great thread. Personally, I agree with a lot of your choices, and I can think of one person who would've been a better choice for Shang's Straight Sword: Li Mei. If she didn't use Sai people would actually focus on her character and moveset and realize that she isn't a Mileena ripoff. The straight sword would fit her character very well as she seems to be based on Jen from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Well I'm glad I at least got a couple replies. Bezou, you bring up an interesting point about Li Mei. I never really thought about her that way. I only saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon once, and wasn't a big fan of it, so the connection never really crossed my mind, and to be honest I don't remember it well enough to see the connection now. I don't really think the straight sword would fit her though, it just seems too bulky for a small character like her. The sais just make more sense- small, quick and deadly.
And Frost4584, no offense but you need to expand your horizons, and play as more characters. What'll you do if Frost isn't in MKD? Also, your reply didn't have much to do with the topic of this thread. I'm not talking about how the characters play, I'm talking about whether or not the styles given to each character fit the respective "personalities" they've developed over the course of the series. I don't mean to bring yo u down or anything, but some of my posts have a history of people misinterpretting the topic, and I don't want to see it happening again.

Sorry if you didn't see what I was saying. Sure it may be your opinion that I don't stick to the topic at hand as you say. I don't know where you got that from. I see a topic I respond to it as honestly as I can , in the proccess not flaming anyone as I do so. As with your thread , I replied to it I explained why I thought Sub-zero and scorpion styles were good or bad and also wether those styles seem to fit them. I don't see where you couldn't get what I said. As a result I just deleted it, since in my point of view, a outragous reason to question my posts here at MKonline.I know that I'm not the best speller in the world, heck I even go back and edit my post a few times because sometimes I leave out a word, but I know what I say and I do make posts that express my point of view and comment on other peoples thoughts and ideas. Please just forget that I even posted it.
I would like to comment about you thinking I need to open up to other people in MK:DA Frost is my fav person to play with, thats my own fav character to play with, thats who I feel most comforable with. I have played with pretty much everyone in MK: DA some I liked playing with some I don't. If Frost isn't in MK6 I'll pick someone else that I feel comforable with. I stick to topics at hand, so please back off. If you have a problem with me , just like Versatile has thats fine, I don't care.
MKonline community has gotten mean spirted these days.

Sorry, I didn't mean to flame you or bash your post or anything, it's just that you seemed to be focusing on how effective the styles were. Effectiveness is certainly an issue worth discussing, but it's not the topic I intended for this thread. I don't remember exactly what you originally wrote, and since you deleted it I can't reread it, but I don't remember you saying anything about whether you thought the styles were appropriate for the characters. Maybe you did mention it, and I didn't realize it, and if that's the case then I apologize. A while back I made a thread asking what characters people hated, but grew to like. Most people just answered with characters they still hated. It kind of annoyed me, because I don't like seeing my threads misinterpretted.
