Ever since this mysterious amulet was introduced I've always wondered why it was so powerful, what made it special, and so forbidden. Well while writing my fan fic (still in developement) I came up with a theory and wanted to get some feed back just to see what everyone else thought about it.

Well, the amulet is decribed as one of a kind, said able only to be created once. Shinnok made it so that he could enter earthrealm with no interference from the other Elder gods. To me this implied that the amulet was able to amplify his power beyond that of an Elder.

Well...what if the amulet was created with the energy or the soul of an elder god? Imagine if there aren't just one or two elder gods, but a group of 10 or 12 of the most wise and powerful beings/gods in the universe, together forming the Council of Elders. By killing and stealing the souls of some of the elders and transfering them to an amulet shinnok was able to harness their power and use it as his own. Thus making him he most powerful and feared entity in the universe.

I dont know if its the full extent of the amulets power but I can already tell you that it has the power to instantly kill someone and open up a portal to pretty much every realm there is out there. Oh and to control the dragon king's army. Hmmm that makes me think-- what if Shinnok had ties with the dragon king since it is his amulet that controls the amulet?

It never was Shinnok's amulet - he was given a duplicate by Quan Chi. If anything, Quan Chi has the connection to the dragon king.

Anyways, I like your theroy. In the world of MK, it sounds very feasible.

What do you mean? It was alway Shinnoks amulet. He had/created it and lost it before MKM, before Raiden put it in the mountains, and before Quan Chi could ever make a duplicate.

The Question is did the Dragon King ever have possession of the amulet?

The Amulet is refered to in the spell Tsung used to transfer souls into the undead army. But was the spell found in the tomb or just a spell Tsung pick ages ago. He could have added the verse about the amulet just as way to control the army. Would you want an army of undead warriors and no way to control them?

Or was the Dragon King a saurian (Raptor) who live in Earth Realm at the time of the war. He could have picked up the amulet during the battle then fled. It doesn't say that Raiden found the amulet immediatly after the battle, just that the Earth was plunged into darkness. Plenty of time for a King to rise and fall.

You have a most interesting theory! Shinnok first used the amulet to harness the forces of earthrealm against Raiden, god of thunder. In the words of Raiden, "....I waged a war that plunged the earth into centuries of darkness and banished Shinnok into a place called the Netherealm...."
The Amulet can be used to do many things.
1) Unbalance the forces and powers that be...
2) Teleport from one world to another
3) Control the undefeatable army of the long forgotten dragon king. (Thanks to Shang Tsung's soul transplantion spell as seen in MKDA)
4) Shinnok used it to create beams of energy balls in MKM against Sub-Zero.
5) Shinnok used it to morph into a huge beast of destruction in MKM.

To be honest, it's powers are really unknown. The amulet could only be created once. However, the sorcerer Quan Chi made a duplicate of it in MK4, and gave Shinnok the phony one, and at one point, he even fooled Raiden with the ole switcheroo....
In other mortal kombat history, Raiden knowing full well the dangers of this amulet, was the one who personally housed it deep within the temple of elements to begin with, as seen in MKM. As long as Skinnok remained in the netherealm, and as long as the amulet was well protected, and far from the presence of any mortal or immortal being, then there would be no problems.
Few have actually laid their hands on this mystical amulet. Here are the names of those who have actually touched it as far as I know: Raiden, Shinnok, Sub-Zero, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, and Kano believe it or not. That is 6 people, and out of those 6, someone is bound to know something about it.

I think whether Shang Tsung or Kano touched it or not remains to be seen.

MKM explains this. The elder gods were going to take Shinnoks powers before banishing him to the Neitherrealm. Rather than loosing his powers he put them in an amulet. In theory that amulet should make its holder about as powerfull as an eldergod.

Shinnok had power as an Elder God before he created the Amulet. The Other Elders stripped him of his godly abilities (I don't mean just the amulet). So he is actually more like an Ex-God
