How did the Earthrealm people survive getting their souls taken in MK3?

I know it's probably something as simple as "their souls were returned to their bodies," but losing ones soul always seemed to be something of a fatality for someone in this series. Also, it seems like Shao Kahn completely devoured the entire bodies of Earthrealm's denizens as well, not just their souls. We don't see any bodies lying around, the streets and buildings are completely vacant.

I'm more concern about how they reacted afterwards to this. It's like, "Oh, the entire population of Earthrealm had their souls taken away from them, what do we do now?"

Like, how does an entire realm just not do anything about it? They more or so just moved on like nothing happened (unless I'm missing out a huge story part that I have yet to read on any website that carries Mortal Kombat canon). Because right after we dove right into Shinnok and his plans, Earthrealm wasn't really that much talked about, more so Edenia and Outworld.

The bodies not lying around was probably just artistic license on the part of stage designers. I'm sure the bodies are supposed to still be lying in the streets.

As for how they got put back...

Well the US government formed the OIA immediately afterward...which invented a device that makes portals and eventually used it to send spies into Outworld like Kenshi and Cyrax to let them know if another attack was ever forthcoming. What else would you suggest?

And 5 to 8 whole years pass between MK3 and MK4. In-universe, Kahn's invasion was old news and the realms had done a lot of rebuilding and recovering and started to move on by the time Shinnok came around. I understand the frustration that the recovery and "how does the world cope" stuff all happens offscreen, but, well...it's not a movie like Avengers where you can have an epilogue full of news reports and eye witness interviews and politicians talking, it was a story told in two-paragraph text endings...

@Razors:

Where did it say 5-8 years passed between MK3 & MK4? I believe you, just wondering where you saw that info.

Scorpion's bio establishes that MK1 takes place 2 years after his death, which would be Mythologies.

Mythologies' backstory states that it take place 10 years before MK4.

Kung Lao's bio in MKDA states that it takes place 10 years after MK1.

So based on, y'know, simple arithmetic, that means MK1 is 8 years before MK4.

Now...MK2 and 3 MIGHT have all taken place back-to-back after MK1, which means MK3 is ALSO 8 years before MK4, OR there could be months-to-years in between each game. That part's a bit vague. We do know Johnny had enough time to make a movie based on the events of the tournament before he died.

One theory to nail down dates suggests that the first three games occurred in the year of their release, which would mean MK1 is set in 1992, MK2 is in 1993, and MK3 is in 1995.

Which would place MK4 in the year 2000 (which is not the year the game came out, but is 8 years after MK1) and MKDA in 2002 (which actually is, conveniently, the year MKDA was released.)

Mk9 covered this issue. Earthrealm's remaining souls were protected by Nightwolf's magic.confused

That was MK3 that said that, not 9. In 9, the souls are never stolen in the first place.
And to be fair, they never specifically said it was Nightwolf who made the souls of the chosen ones unstealable, they implied that Raiden or the Elder Gods did that. Nightwolf just protected the souls of his reservation and made it a safe place. The rest of the warriors didn't arrive there until later, after the world was already fucked.

This picture makes it look like Kahn is completely consuming their bodies based on the fact that they're becoming physically transparent. Also, the only instance of how the logic of soul taking worked that was shown before Deadly Alliance was in MKII when Tsung does his soul-steal fatality and that took the flesh and vitality of the body entirely, perhaps to show that his emperor's ability to consume the essence of mortals is far superior.

You do have a point. I never really thought about the see-thru-girl part of that picture all that deeply.

When Shao Kahn stepped through the dimensional gates to reclaim his bride Sindel, he immediately began stripping the souls of everyone on Earth. Sometime during these events Raiden was given the power to protect the Earthrealm warriors from having their souls stripped away as well.

According the original story in MK3 the arcade one, it was Raiden who protected the Earthrealm Warriors.

When you think about it since MKII really wasn't a Tournament but was a scheme devised by Shang Tsung to lure the Earth warriors to Outworld these warriors would be protected since they were in the Outworld. Nightwolf used his magic to protect himself and his lands from Shao Kahn's invasion. Stryker if I remember correctly was protected by Raiden.

Flash forward to Trilogy because in Ultimate MK3 the majority of the newer added fighters were all Outworld fighters with the exception of maybe one being the masked Sub-Zero. Anyway...according to the story Johnny Cage's soul was blocked to the afterlife due to Shao Kahn's merger so he was not allowed entrance until Kahn was defeated. My own personal opinion the merger also resurrected Classic Sub-Zero (I believe Classic Sub-Zero is Bi Han and in Armageddon he did return to fight Noob). That is my opinion but Raiden was the one who protected the remaining Earthrealm warriors according to MK3's story.

I personally don't count trilogy as a canon story game lol
