Not only did Kung lao defeat goro, he also defeated shang tsung.

To answer youre second question, it sais that mortal kombat was a tournemnt held for ages, there must have been numerous. Remember Goro was champion for 500 years and nobody could beat him after the fall of kung lao.

it is true that there were other kombats. but for earth it wasnt around as long. shang tsung won 9 times before kung lao beat him. then at the next tournament kung lao was defeated by goro. so 500 years and 9 tournaments later we're at mk1. mk revolution has the full story of mortal kombat up until mk4.

kung lao never beat goro, goro beat him. i dont know where you got your info from, but its wrong.

ill keep it brief:
shang tsung won the tital of grand champion. he remained champion until the arrival of kung lao. kung lao defeated shang tsung. shang then retreated into the depths of outworld.

years later, shang returned to the tournament prematurely aged...he brought with him goro, a half human dragon and former pupil, to compete for the tital of grand champion. goro defeated kung lao and the tournament fell into shangs hands.

goro was never defeated until liu kang in mk1.

and about how often the tournaments are held, its once a generation. 1 tournament every 50 years. 1 tournament every 50 years, for 500 years = 10 tournaments. mk1 being the 10th tournament.

It's hard to tell if the "win 10 in a row" thing is real in the first place. It was never in the story of the first two games.

In the original Tsung is just corrupting the Shaolin Tournament. There is no mention of needing to win any in a row or needing to do anything to help Shao Kahn. He is just the evil master who corrupts an otherwise pure tournament to feed off souls. The original game is not even an Earth vs. Outworld deal. It never was until MK II. The Shaolin tournament was not made to be Outworld vs. Earth. It was just a noble battle between the best warriors on Earth. Two otherwordly fighters(Shang and Goro) arrived, won it, and started ruining it, but that's it.

In II we learn that he was corrupting it to unbalance the furies and allow Kahn to enter Earth. Again, there was nothing about needing to win 10 in a row. He simply had to tip the scales towards chaos.

There's nothing about it in MK3 either. The only thing it says is that Tsung had tried to win the Earth Realm "through tournament battle".

The first time the "Outworld must win 10 in a row" thing came up was in the movie, which is obviously non-canon(Sub-Zero and Scorp clearly did not work together, Cage did not beat Goro, ect.) and the first time it appeared in a game was MKT. Another time it came up is in DA when it says that Bo' Rai Cho winning back then would have been a victory for Outworld. Even then, I'm not so sure that means the 10 in a row thing is right. It could just be Bo'(an outworld warrior) winning would tip the scales towards chaos, even though he himself is a good guy. Finally the only other mention of it I can think of is in Rain and Sindel's stories in 3 when it says Kahn had taken over Edenia via tournament battle. Again though, it doesn't specify how. We don't know if he took it over by winning 10 in a row or just invading their own tournament and corrupting it enough. Even if he won their realm through a battle we don't know if the same applied to Earth.

So basically, like most things in the MK story, it's very confusing and lots of speculation is needed. The older games make no mention of it at all and it's pretty clear the idea was simply to win enough and ruin it enough to tip the scales. The newer games since the movies seem to point towards needing to win a certain amount. Who knows? Honestly, I don't think Midway really cares.

But anyway, I hate how they change canon to fit the movies. The Kitana/Liu Kang romance, 10 wins in a row, Reptile's new appearance...all of that stuff is from the movie. Lame.

no one knows how long shang was champion. the only thing that is mentioned in the game (and the comics) says "times changed when a scorcerer by the name of shang tsung entered the tournament and became grand champion. he remained champion until the arrival of kung lao"..it never said anything anywhere about shang winning 9 tournaments.
