Various reports seem to contradict, as one interview will throw the word "emulation" around while another will use the term "port."
Are the people just using the terms interchangeably or what? Keep in mind that it's very possible to have some games in the collection be ports, while others are emulations (Midway's "Arcade Party Pack" for PS1 was like this). The question is, which will the MK games be?

No matter how you do it, if it's not the arcade, or identically emulated hardware, it's a port, and in a sense, emulated hardware is still a port too. Port just means a transfer and adaptation to play on another platform. In this case, it's not possible to run the games in the indentical fashion they were meant to be played in, but it is possible to reproduce the illusion that they are perfect. Trust me, I'll notice any flaws in the games once it's out lol and I will be sure to post them.

They will in fact be better than if played on Mame because there won't be any sound glitches. Graphics wise they can't be, but just as good yes.

I kind of assumed they'd have to leave it the same as the arcade, at least graphics wise because of the whole thingy with the actors. I assumed they couldn't use all the old sprites in MKT because not all the actors were still on good terms with Midway. That leads me to think they wouldn't be able to change this game so much as just sell it again, in the same way it was sold before.
As far as the graphics, I think for the most part people will think its lower quality because they'll be playing it on normal TVs that will make it look blurry and bad. Thats why the DC version of MVC2 was said to have less then arcade graphics by so many.

As I understand it, emulating would be a lot easier for the programmers. Once they've got the emulator down, they would just use the exact code ripped straight from the ROM, and they're done. That's what I think of when I hear the term "emulation," anyway.
But if the screen doesn't prompt you to Insert Coins or the Attract mode demos are different or anything like that, I'd consider it a "port." Basically any deviation form the original code equals a port in my book. In some arcade collection I have, if I remember correctly, Paperboy and Gauntlet were ports, while Roadblasters and Marble Madness were emulations... or something like that, I'm probably getting mixed up but you get the idea.

That's very true.
My advice to everyone if you want the best picture is to have a high end tv and component hook up since it will create the best picture possible for non-HD games.
I' curious and eager to see how close that setup would get you to the actual arcade picture.

About the characters and legal issues, you would think that after the lawsuits of MK1 that after MK2 they would have done something contractual to prevent anything like that from happening again.

Or get a VGA adapter for your system. That would do just fine as well. Thats what allows the DC to get the full arcade resolution on so many games.
