I have Mame32 0.66 running on my pc (800Mhz Intel Pentium III, 192 ram). I have both Mortal Kombat (rev 5.0) and Mortal Kombat II (rev L3.1) ROMs. They are working, but they're SOOOO damn slow, drives me nuts. In a fight I usually have 8 frames or so in MKI. Does any one know how i can speed this up by changing some settings or something? Oh, and my operating system is windows XP. Any tips are welcome, thanks!!

Turning off the sound helps me. And be sure to set it to draw every frame. I can run all the classic MKs on my comp (P3 450, 128mb, Win2k) and they all go full speed, nice and smooth, so long as sound is off and frameskip is set to Draw Every Frame.
Also, you might want to fiddle with different versions of mame. Maybe the PPro version or something. I know on my comp each one acted slightly differently with the latest version with Kaillera included ran pretty good, but the PPro non Kaillera version ran better.

Hi man I know what your taking about my friends have two computers one is a 800mhz and another is a 1.5 ghz and the 800 mhz computer the mortal kombats ran really slow I hate having to turn the sound off it sucks but on the 1.5 ghz processor the game ran perfect with sound on no slowing down nothing the ram was 512 if this is important but from my experience a computer that is at least 1.0 ghz will run the mortal kombat games perfect.
Quite true, you need at least 1.0 gig processor and 265 memory to play MK decently. Be sure to shut off all unecessary icons on the lower right hand side of the screen to free up your memory, it will play quicker. I have a 2.5 gig processor and 1.2 gig memory and I have no problems with any game what so ever. This is only for the ultimate gaming system, otherwise go for the 1.0/256 at least.

Intel 450 will run MK1 fine with harldy any frame skip and sound on. MK3 not so good. I don't know about XP thought but I heard that there is a special version of MAME for faster processors (800 MHz counts as faster) which might help you out. Check for it man!!

I just tried UMK3 on my girlfriend's comp. A P3 733 with 128 megs PC133 ram and Win98SE. UMK3 runs full arcade speed, totally smooth with the sound on and at good quality.
So I guess its more then just the Processor speed and amount of memory that affect the smoothness of it. Perhaps vid card. I tried it on a comp that had Shared Ram and that ran like it was on a 486.
You should probably have a bunch of free ram. Win 98SE without a lot of crap burdening it down seems to do good but if there is a lot of junk installed emptying the system tray won't be enough and adding more ram won't help cause over 256 does little good for Win98.
I use Win2K and it does a decent job, lets me play umk3 smoothly with sound off, but I only have a P3 450. I'll have to try it out on WinXP.
Also, you could always download the DOS version of mame, make a DOS 6.22 boot disk and run it there. Without the huge OS loaded in ram it may run better.

I think it's basicly the vid-card and the amount of RAM you got! I tried MK2 on various machines:
here's a comparison:
P200MMX
lameass PCI thing card
64 megs of RAM
--> it didn't even boot with sound
P2 350
Voodoo 3
128 MB Ram
-->about 25fps with sound
P4 1.3 ghZ
geForce 2MX
256 MB (rd)Ram
--> perfect!
P4 2.53 ghz
geForce4 ti 4200
512 MB rdRAM
--> perfect - even with 1600x1200 resolution!!

RAM doesn't have much to do with it. I have 256 MB of RAM, and usually have a ton of programs running along with MK1 or 2, with no problems.
It's the processor speed that matters. My 600 MHZ 265 MB PC won't run either MK 1 or 2, but my 1.5 GHZ AMD will.

I dont believe there is, I haven't seen it and it isn't on the list of games emulated by Mame. As for MvC it was relatively easy for them to emulate because it is CPS2.
