MK1 sparks controversy? How?

Okay, two things. First off, don't assume I hate MK. I love Mortal Kombat games and they make a great fighting game series. Second, don't just say "because it was bloody", because there were many games that were so much gorier and yet, MK sparked so much controversy.
My only question is, how in the name of God did MK get so hyped up because a guy got his head knocked off in it? The goriest thing in the game was a guy's head exploding or an impaled head. I realize that the people against the game thought it might give kids bad ideas about fighting, but it's not like some kid is going to get his spine ripped out or get kissed by a girl and burst into flames.
As well, the graphics weren't realistic in any way, other than the impaled heads. I do know that at the time, they couldn't do photorealistic graphics, but I mean, COME ON. You can't claim that a few pixels covered in pixelated flames is REALISTIC. Even before '92, there were movies that had people's chests bursting and arrows impaled in people's throats, and yet, Mortal Kombat is deemed more realistic than that?
Anyone with me here?

Yes, there were games that equaled MK's violence level, there were actually games that surpassed it, but the reason why MK was struck with the controversey that it got, was because it was the only game that was widely popular and had the violence and gore to go along with that. So basically it had a huge spot-light on it.

There weren't really many games that violent with wide release in arcades and I don't know if there were any for the home consoles before MK1.
What else was there in the arcades beforehand? Pit Fighter?

I still think it is lame to call MK1 bloody. I mean, common, its a great game even by todays standards by to call it that is rediculous. The amount of blood that was in MKDA, and other games that came after it are clearly more excessive. By the way MK1 RULES!

Well duh. Of course the newer MKs are going are going to be bloodier than previous MKs. The point is that MK1 was "bloody" for it's time of release, compared to any other fighting games that were at at that time.

You don't know that. Anything's possible.
Especially if you're Santa Claus.

Also, I point I forgot earlier, was that there was a general controversy at the time about who was responsible for the content of video games. MK1 came out before the ESRB rating system. At them time parents could still argue that video game companies were totally responsible for the content of their games and could argue that all games released en mass were aimed at children so it was shocking that someone would make a bloody gory, adult video game.
Shortly afterwards, when ESRB came around, video game companies could wash their hands of the whole ordeal.
Parents: "You can't have blood and gore in your video games!"
VG Company: "We warn on the box that it is for Teenagers, not children. You should monitor what your children play more!"
Once everyone was over the violence hump, the concerned public went after general vulgarity as was demonstrated by Primal Rage for Genesis, which was pulled from shelves after a mother's campaign won out in court. Apparently the golden shower fatality was too much. Everything else was acceptable by that time though.

Yeah, I got the game one week before it was taken off shelves. It's probably one of the best games on the Genesis, and I'm glad I got it.
I was 7 at the time, and the golden shower made me laugh. I wasn't grossed out about it at all. That mother was way too strict about the crudness of it.
