I had to say it. i fucking love MK4. Way way way better than shitty ass MK3. Brutal fatalities (mk3's were silly and retarded) awesome characters (no stupid robots)...I just love it. Now THIS is what I want as a bonus on MKA. Or at least in MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES 4 if that even comes out.

MK3 > MK4
MK4 PWNZ ALLLLLLLLL. MK3 izzz teh SUXXXXORRRZZZZ. Get over it, go rot in hell, God is Not here today is right, believe it.
Actually, MK3 was aright (not as good as MK4, though.) but MKDA was horse shit, believe it. Why did Tobias have to leave and take all the smart people with him????
Anyways, to back up my point, MK4 was the last GOOD MK fighting game. Then Deadly Alliance came along and the following things happened:
1. You could no longer tell which button was to kick and which button was to punch. In all previous MK games there was a familiar and reliable control layout. Everyone uppercutted, roundhoused, and swept the same way. The three styles innovation was alright, it was just executed poorly. Not only that but the gameplay was slowed down dramatically and no longer had the acrobatic flair of previous MK's. Add to that all of the brokenness and lame, two hit combos and you can see that gameplay totally went to the tubes after Numero Quatro.
2. Shitty graphics. The characters looked like plastic. If it wasn't enough that they looked like plastic dolls they moved like them, too. Make that constipated, enema-addicted plastic dolls with 5 points of articulation. The blood looked fake, and the fatalities were horrible. If I wanted bloody popcorn, I'd go have a nosebleed in a movie theatre. Absolutely ridiculous, no excuse at all for this shit. Example: punch someone in the face and blood will rain as well roll down his/her entire body baseball sized droplets. Chop someone's head off and mysteriously, no blood. Am I the only one who sees something wrong here? And nothing tops the enormous "puddles" of blood that looked like lumps of red Play-Do.
3. Horrible new characters. A drunk fatass and a goth vampire chick. Sterotypical, unimaginative ideas that could be trumped by a school bus full of pre-pubescant children. Accoirding to popular opinion, the best new character was Kenshi and he was avarage at best. Not only that, but they butchered old characters like Reptile, transorming him into a stereotypical, cliched lizardman, and to top it off, didn't even do it right. I've seen better lizardmen in Everquest.
Anyways, onto just a few of the reasons MK4 ruled.
1. Excellent graphics. Yes, it was PS1 era graphics, but they still managed to look darker, and more realsistic than the crap in DA.
2. Excellent use of camera. Camera can make or break a game and MK4 certainly capitalized on it. Nothing says 3D like cinematic camera angles and whacking your opponent into the glass.
3. Drop-dead gorgeous fatalities. IMO, this game shares the spot for best fatalities with MKII. Classic: Liu Kang's Jurassic Park-style dragon mauling, Quan Chi's brutal leg rip and beating, Sub Zero's epic spine rip and many others were entertaining time and time again. Add to that the excellent cinematography that showcased these gory feats with top-notch camera angles and expertly applied replays as well as perfect cinematic timing and you have youself a winner.
4. Quick, solid gameplay. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This game perfectly incorperated everything that was good about the 2D MK's into a 3D enviroment. Granted, the leap to 3D was mostly cosmetic, but what a leap it was! Sure, there were sidesteps but the gameply owned anyway.
I'll probably post more later as I come up with it. Cheerz!

I don't think you listed a single supportable fact.

as much as i love mk4 its not better than umk3/mk3, its a fact
MK4 is the disgrace of MK. Poor movements, outdated FMVs and graphics SAVE for the exceptional effect shading on the fires and the luminescence,
broken gameplay, uniteresting characters with substanceless endings or
retcons (Scorpion died in MK4 for me) ... the creative failure that Tobias became in MK4 (clues were already in MK3).
MKDA or even MKD over it anyday.

mk4's gameplay is far more balanced than mk2 and mk1

If you wanted to be... um... "open minded," I suppose one could argue that Maximum Damage and identical normals make MK4 the most "balanced" of the series.

Maximum Damage. Heh. You're gonna love psykosonik's MK4/G vid

yeah, max damage makes few infs possible, and few mk4 characters broken as hell in mkgold

I forgot about MKG actually. Isn't Sektor top (god?) tier in that?

Gah, MKDA and MKD are utter trash. DA was where MK fell off for me, not counting MKSF, never played it, don't want to. As far as the MK fighting games go, DA is the worst one in my book.
And in case you're wondering how I grade the games, it's on an artistic scale. MK4, to me, was definitely more apreciable as a piece of art. MKDA lacked the whole MK feel. It didn't have the same gritty coolness that every MK had before it. If MK1-4 were a shark prowling the water, MKDA would be a feeble old man flailing desparately to survive. Everything about it just screamed "trying too hard." Miserable comic relief, stale fart jokes, uninspired, lame in every way. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I expected better--a lot better. The gameplay is slow and convoluted, the controls are unnessesarily complicated and the overall presentation was lacking. It seemed like they were just making a game for the sake of making a game. No creative vision or any real substance to it at all. It seemed rushed, the art, for the most part, was horrible, it didn't have the same attention to detail or commitment to quality that previous MK's had.

I totally agree...I bought it for Playstation before I even had a Playstation to play it on.
MK 4 was aight.. I liked it... MK3 on the other hand...... ehhhh... I barely play it to this day.
As far as the DA argument..... they shoulda kept the original 5 button configuration from MK1-4..... that was one of my major gripes with MKDA and even Deception.. which I liked.....

Ya know wut, i agree. I hear a lot of Mk4 Bashin, and I personally dont c wut everyone is bitchin about. In fact, dare i say it, I think mk4 is the best mk to date. Before u all start sharpinin ur saws, hear me out. It has all of the features that made Mk classic, with the addition of gorgeous graphics and without all the things that mared previous entries ( i.e. tobias and boon trying to be funny, gross character brokeness, e.t.c.).
And Anansi, u said it man. Da and D BLEW!!! I miss the old graphics, and i think adding the new combo system was the worst decission in Mk history (even over reptiles monkey animality....). The characters loose all of there swiftness and feel clunky as hell. I wont deny the greatness of Mk1-3, but put simply, Mk4 ruled. End of story.

actually there are some reasons to like mk4 : 1) the speed of the game engine is really fast, really much than mk3 and umk3, 2) for the first time the endings are videos and it's quite funny to watch, 3) the appearance of weapons is a good idea, it's rather entertaining especially in vs mode, 4) it's a mk game that can be pretty quickly mastered, so anyone can take the controller and play a good match with his friends without having to study a 100 pages pdf format tutorial guide, 5) mk4 contains probably the best fatalities (quan chi's leg grab, shinnok's hell hand, scorpion's morph into a scorpion...) and the appearance of the 3D makes them much more believable than before.
mkg and mk4 are definitely not bad games, even if they have many bad points.
anyway mk3 is now completely boring to play, it's only a retarded version of umk3, so in some way it makes sense to prefer mk4 than mk3.

You're serious?
So you're saying you'd rather have a game like MKII, where every round was like this:
FIGHT!
*Walk over*
*Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Roundhouse*
*Jump towards*
*Sweep, Sweep, Sweep*
And you're done.
Face it - you know nothing about fighting games, and I can tell just from that one comment.
