Liu Kang, Sonya, Raiden, Reptile, Jarek, Quan Chi, Kitana, Mileena, Cyrax and Jax all die in one of the MK4/Gold endings. If all those endings would be true, the MK universe would have lost quite a few characters, don't you think? Usually, the next game tells us which endings really did happen. In MK4's case, only the endings of Scorpion and Raiden were true. And Kai's, probably.
