Sometimes I think I'm one of the five people on Earth that like 3 better than II....So here's somethin' for y'all.

What things about II were better than 3? What improvments, if any, were made in 3? Or do you just completely hate 3?

There is something about 2 that is lacking in 3....
but I don't know what it is... MK2 was always the best
until I discovered team battles which means my new
favourite is MK3!!! grin

mk2 and mk3 where the best in the mk series i hate people that say mk3 was the downfall of mk. bs mk4 was. mk2 and mk3 will always be the best no 3d mk game can top them
Well MK3 wasnt a bad game (UMK3 is a great game, it is the real MK3 for me)
but the stylechange from MK2 too MK3 was maybe a little bit too hard, I mean those street backgrounds and characters like Stryker, Nightwolf, Sindel, Sheeva (No I dont hate them, but I dont think the people wanted to see such new chars, the wanted to see instant classic newcomers like in MK2 (Baraka, Kunglao ect.)) the different non-mystic background music, the changed gameplay (from very defense slow style gameplay to RUN button agressive gameplay) and many little other details wasnt what the MK fans expected after MK2 I think.
Another fact for me is that you need to play UMK3 much longer to get a feeling for it and actually to enjoy it fully, MK2 was more easier to get in I think, and the better atmosphere was a + too.
And yes, MK4 was the real downfall, a poor try to convert MK into the 3D dimension, none of the new chars. in MK4 are memorable, the gameplay was broken, the feeling was wrong.
(That,s all my personal feelings I only talk for me)

The difference with me is that I played MK2 first, but that was WAY before I got into it, then 2 years later, I tried MK3, so techincally MK3 was the opening of the MK series for me. I love MK3, a lot of the characters were subpar, but that only increased the value of the good ones, so I love MK3, MK2 looks a lot better, but MK3 play a lot better for me, I still have the original MK3 for PSX, I play it... As well as the one for Genesis, but I have all of them for Genesis. The point is, I love 3, and yes, 4 was the major downfall, the only thing I like about 4 is the ending cinematics.

I find 3 to be superior in virtually every way. Gameplay, combo system, character roster, story, backgrounds, soundtrack...all are better in 3.

Except the Fatality Realism, that was just memory saving and laziness on behalf of Midway.

The main thing for me is the quality of the Fatalities. I memorized every Fatality in MKII. Only a couple in MK3.

MK3 seemed to have somewhat of a darker atmosphere, what with the music and the fatality tune. Especially the music that plays after the fatality. Some great stuff.
And the gameplay is easier for me on MK3 for some reason.
I still think MK1 is the best.

I think hands down MK3 is better. But, thats because I love the gameplay of it so much. MK2 was a cool look and feel, a nice experience, but the gameplay was nothing compared to MK3.

I don't hate Mk3....but they kinda over did a few things that sorta soured it for me.The combos were a little cheap. The friendships, babalities, and(shudder)animalties took away from what most fans wanted the next MK to be.I mean its hard to take a game seriously when one second your character is beating someone to death and the next he turns into a bloody penguin. And Mk3 was done half assed in my opinion.I mean I didn't realize that when you blew someone up they were supposed to have 6 legs, 3 arms, and 5 skulls. Some of the fatalities were just too cheesey. Mk2 was dark and sadistic and didn't apolgize for it.Mk3 gave me a mixed feeling. You feel like your out for blood one second then laughing the next. It's like finding out that hot chick you liked was a dude....God I'm sorry for that.

Or us guys could play both MK2 and MK3 for the arcade pathetically large amounts and still realize that MK3 gameplay is faster, tighter, and better :)

MK2: Mathematically better graphics, but sounds and music are purely opinion on what you like, this in many people's opinions doesn't make it a better game, it makes it a better show.

MK3: Faster, tighter, crafted, but some people don't think that makes it a better game, even though those are things that describe the gameplay, not the visual and audio aspect.

The reason people think MK3 was worse than MK2, is because most of those people played those games on the 16-bit consoles. MK2 was an alright conversion, MK3 was absolutely horrible on the consoles, save for Playstation.

If you judge the arcade MK3 and the arcade MK2 side by side, MK3 kills MK2 in every way. The music, gameplay, and graphics all improved in MK3. MK3 improved upon everything that made MK2 a hit, and added more play value in. You can discover all there is to discover in MK2 in a week, but it takes alot longer than that with MK3 which has 10 times more secrets. Until we find Ermac in MK2, when you discover Smoke, Jade and Noob Saibot in MK2, that's it, the game has been blown open.

MKII

I like that music after the fatality too for who ever else mention that. If you play MKTrilogy, switch between Jax from MKII and MK3 and other players one the select screen back and forth, it is clearly seen that the the MKII players were bigger and looked better graphically.

The portal stage from MKII, the stage with the spikes on the ceiling had some awsome music, then there even tighter boards like the living Forest that fit well and made you want to do nothing but FIGHT!

As someone else mentioned earlier not having certain characters disappointed too. MKII just had the perfect image with Raiden on the side with lightning and the game was as exciting to play as it looked.
