Well, this is my opinion and mine alone, but here are a few tips:
Baraka is a great starting point for biginners, or if you wanna play cheap.
Remember to press Back , back, back, low punch for an awesome blade cuting move!
Next, press down back high punch, and that wil throw a blade pulse!
That may put him on the defensive. Also, remember to press back and high punch to use the blade like a knife.
Actually, these moves are not cheap, they are rather honerable

My advice would be to learn basic move properties with MKII, juggling, etc, and then forget about it and move onto UMK3.

Very honorable.
My advice: Practice on the Tournament mode on the Highest Setting or work your way up. Learn a few tricks or, the underhanded version, use GameShark.

Pick whatever character. And play a lot using just the regulars moves. Don't do spears or teleports or fireballs. Just punches, kicks, roundhouses, uppercuts, sweeps. Learn the things you can use with any character. Once you've learned that a bit, you can start including special moves to complement the regulars.
Constantly, repetatively depending on special moves is a definate way to lose.
