Music of the first game...

I own the Sega Genesis version of the first MK game and one of the things that I loved and remembered about that game is the music. Heck, I even made a .wav file of the opening music.
Now, I have listened to the soundtrack for the SNES version and I must say that it is quite inferior regardless of graphics, IMO.
So, what's your opinion of the differing soundtracks of the first game and which did you prefer?

Super Nintendo has more channels, higher quality midi instruments, and an overall better sound processor. It's impossible for it to be worse than Sega's mathematically, so any discrepencies in the music reproduction is circumstantial. Personally, I feel that SNES has out and out better music in every MK game, it's a shame cause sometimes the themes cut themselves out from time to time, you'll notice it on a stage like the Tower, or the Living Forest, where bits disappear in the middle of the music cause I think it's trying to do too much. If you could directly rip the tracks and play them in full without any interference they would sound even better. Sega's songs top out at like 3 channels I think, even though the processor can handle 6, split amongst the music and sound effects, quite sad, and beyond that, the music sounds like a PC speaker half the time. I wonder what the MK games would look like if they were rereleased using every possible upgrade chip that SNES came out with over time and probably didn't take advantage of for these games, like the SuperFX2 Microchip. Apparently they used it for SFA2 and the game came out pretty well. There was also a Transformers game never released that was going to use it. Hopefully DreemerNJ will read this cause he loves the music from MK1 and I know he'll have a lot to say, but, Mike what did we call the Genesis sound processor?

Interesting. Regarding 16-bit MK games, I always favored the Super Nintendo versions minus the exception of MK one because the Sega Genesis version had the blood code and a much easier way to get to Reptile. I don't think the Genesis MK mucsic topples the SNES but then again I could be wrong.

mk1 for snes is terrible! yep, the musics and sounds are closer to the arcade but the entire gameplay is just unbelievable, about Reptile, actually in SNES version you dont have to wait for shadows over the moon, just because there are none in the game, all you have to do is get the pit stage, and beat the opponent double flawless and perform fatality. Good point for SNES is that you can play as Reptile via gameshark, but i still choose genesis version, it has different songs but i like them, they reminds me the oldschool kung-fu movies lol the gameplay is better also

The Amiga pwned all in the home versions in terms of sound. But then again it wasn't 16-bit, and it had a great sound processor for the time...(Me and my impartiality for MK1 and 2 on Amiga
)
If I were to choose which was best on a 16-bit console, I would choose the Sega CD version. Ok, the sounds were from the CD but the game was still run through a 16-bit console
Honestly, if I'm actualy gonna stay on topic, I'd say Genesis. I have it in my head that the music was better on the Sega version than the SNES - but perhaps thats cus I have bad memories of the Snes version...

I didn't know that Reptile was playable via a gameshark. Thats awesome and kinda makes me want to play it for that. Tell me, when you do play as Reptile, is it just how he is when you face him? Faster motions, sub and scorps moves?

actually yes, the Sega CD is the same like Genesis version but with CD Audio, better frame animations and some character animation fixes (like sub-zero standing pose).
About Reptile kode its 656A-47AF. Its actually a couple kodes in one. If you're playing a one player game, start as anyone you want. After you beat the person from the 1st match you will start another match, this time against Reptile. You will keep fighting Reptile until you turn off the Game Genie. If you do turn off the Game Genie you will kontinue your game as usual. If you turn the Game Genie back on, after you beat your opponent you will fight Reptile again. If you lose a match to Reptile, and you kontinue, you will kontinue as Scorpion. But if you lose and don't kontinue, you can watch the computer play against itself as Reptile vs. Reptile (one says Scorpion). If you want to start a new game, let the computer beat itself and don't kontinue. You will then go to the title screen.
If you're playing a 2 player game, player 2 can play as Reptile, sort of. Start a 2 player game and have player 2 choose Scorpion or Sub-Zero as their fighter. Then have player 2 beat up player 1 and don't continue. The next match will then be against Reptile. Have player 1 join in. Player 1 will automatically start as Scorpion. Then when player 2 begins playing, Scorpion or Sub-Zero will be in Reptile's green uniform and it will say Reptile in your energy bar. But even though you look like Reptile, you still can't do both Scorpions and Sub-Zero's special moves. You can only do one or the others. If you choose someone other than those two fighters, your character will be a strange green color.

p.s. can someone tell me how can i post link and image without typing them like a text lol thanks!

When I get a chance I will record the SNES and Genesis musics and post them so everyone can hear them since a lot of people have foggy memories. Mine's crystal clear though.

Actually, one site already has both soundtracks for download. However, you need a player that can play .SPC (Super Nintendo music) and .GYM (Sega Genesis music). The site also has links to available players and plugins for WinAMP. I recommend the Meridian Advance player myself.
Anywho, here's the link. http://www.zophar.net/index.phtml

I didn't like the SNES version of MIK1 as compaired to the Genesis version, because on SNES the fatailities were faked. (Raiden shocking you to a skeliton, rather then the real fatality of Raiden blowing your head to peices).
The removal of blood, and it being replaces with grey "sweet" was also horrable.

Yes I did indeed love the music for MK1. And I still do love the music as produced by the SNES version. Its funny that this discussion popped up because last time i was at my parents house I found an old old audio cassette of Video Game musices I made back before MK3 came out. it features the MK1 select screen music from SNES, my favorite MK music to date. I actually prefer the SNES version over the arcade now that I;ve listened to the arcades a few times.
Genesis was just horrific. So so so sad. I believe the proper term for the sound system on the Genesis was the Garblizer. It garbled everything. In fact there was a fun game genie code for MK2 for SNES that was referred to on the internet as "Sega Sound" because the code knocked down the music and sound effects to make them terribly Genesis like, which meant terrible.

When MK1 for the home systems was released, out of all four playfroms the closest to the arcade music, animation, and everything but the gore was of course the SNES. Genesis lacked the music, sound effects, but had the extra gore in tact in the game through a code. The hand helds were no where near the arcade perfect ports. The first release on PC was a disc version of the game where sound effects were awesome, and the sound was okay. When the Sega CD version of MK was released we had the first exact arcade music of the game. I know because I still own my copy. It will also play as a normal CD so you can have all the original MK1 music, plus some music from the MK Movie hidden in the end. Then came the PC, and Saturn's MK1/MKII combo disc. The Saturn's is almost virtually unable to locate, but it did pop up on Ebay for a heafty fee, and a local flee market where I live had a copy for a big price. According to Acclaim, a handful did actually get shipped out. Anyway, these versions had identical arcade everything for MK1. MKII was sound effects perfect on PC, but music was all Midi style. The Saturn's MKII was close to arcade perfect on the combo disc. It was missing some true arcade music, but all the sound effects missing on the solo Saturn MKII release were all placed back inside. Now we have MK1 on the X-Box, and PS2. Evern though one stage music is hard to hear, and there appears to be some stuttering problems once in a while, it is arcade perfect. But that is every version of MK1 I have played, and what I thought of them. But if you are looking for a CD to play in a stereo to listen to the MK1 arcade music, then find a copy of MK1 on Sega CD, and you have it. For MKII, and UMK3, and MK3, buy MK Trilogy on PS1, or Saturn, and you have all of that music as well.

MK3 for PC has the best arcade port music. They were slightly adapted in some parts to fit the CD format cause they are tracks, not midis that can loop and be mathematically edited to line up, so they in fact fade out eventually. They are 99.9% exact to the arcade and I love them. Playstations are good, but slower for some reason for the MK3 musics, which I think sucks. MK2 musics are dead on though pretty much, same fade out concept. There was even a music CD released I think with just about all the MK themes after MK3.

I must be one of the only other people that likes the Genesis MK 1 music.
It sounds different from the other versions. I don't know if the SNES had the different music too because it's been so long since I played that version.
I remember playing MK 1 on the Genesis a few months ago after playing it on MAME for a while and going "man, it's definitely not how I remember it, but damn I still love the music."
To put it bluntly, the genesis music was different from the arcade and for some reason, it always had it's charm with me. That and MKII to the Genesis.
