Something that works for me 90% of the time is right after the final blow (right before it says finish him), hold in the button for the fatality that you want to do. The character then will walk to the distance they need ot be at and perform their fatality.

you have to press the same button you finished your enemy with, and fatalitys are triangle and circle, brutalitys are square, friendships are block, and I forget babalitys and animalitys.

if you are in a combo and do a hit after the life bar goes down to zero and it says finish him/her it won't work. sometimes you might get lucky.
