The problem with the "M" rating is that it covers a ridiculously large range of content. It's ludicrous that a Mortal Kombat game gets the same rating as something like Grand Theft Auto. If I had a kid, I'd have no problem letting him/her play MK, but I sure would think twice about GTA.
Another problem is that a lot of parents probably assume that any "M" game has content equivalent to an "R"-rated movie. 9 times out of 10, that couldn't be further from the truth. For example most parents wouldn't realize that "mature sexual themes" in a video game usually just means "cleavage." But since the ratings system is so inadequate, we get these vague descriptors that lead to parents or vendors just making these blanket generalizations.
I think the prescence of GUNS is a big deal these days too. I can't think of any other reason why Halo would get an "M," since it really isn't gory or anything. A lot of parents who freak out over an "M" rating might be fine with a game that depicts guns... but once they see that "M" they just assume the game will be throwing R-rated content at their 9-year-old so they refuse to buy it.

I think kids should be able to play MK and GTA.It's the parents job to know what their kid can handle. If I had a kid I would let him/her play it but I'll tell them there is a difference between Reality and Video Games.

I think that Mortal Kombat is not the equivelent of an M rated game. I mean, kids probably start playing MK at nine or Ten. The ESRB should have a rating that's says Teen 15+ like they did with the star wars episode III game. That was rated Everyone 10+
