I didn't even know Sambo was a fighting style until MKDA but I knew it was a racist term. For those who don't know, it was a popular depiction of blacks in the early part of the century as lazy, stupid and child-like, intended to keep blacks "in their place." I highly doubt the creators of MK are racist, it's more likely the style was given to Cyrax with no pun intended, probably by someone unaware of its other meaning, and by the time people picked up on the way it could be taken it was too late, and deemed not a big deal. I think whether you see it as coincidence or intended insult has to do with what you know about the word. I'm not a big gamer, and I didn't know it was used in other games, but I learned about "sambo" as a racial slur in a high school media class in a lesson concerning racial propaganda, so that's the association I have of the word. Someone unfamiliar with this meaning but familiar with the fighting style are less likely to think about it in racial terms.

OK, I exaggerated. But seriously racist people make up less than 3 percent. I don't care if you don't want to believe it, and don't forget the world is bigger than the USA.

Racism is a form of prejudice based on race. Prejudice is to prejudge something. That is, to judge prematurely based on a certain quality, in this case, race. By that definition, not all racists are restricted to hate groups or zealots hell bent on ridding the planet of certain peoples. The majority of racists are not so vocal about it and there are many of them throughout the world. As long as different people are indeed different and as long as there are people who are thickheaded enough not to understand or at least try to understand those differences there will be prejudice. The most dangerous thing is to ignore it. And to think that racism is restricted to the US is to ignore it.

LOLLLLLLLLLLL!

that was some funny shit man.. anyways I've never heard of Sambo as a racial slur in my life either. As far as I know, Sambo is a wrestling/ street fighting style used by Russian, Armenian, Georgian, and other former Soviet nations' KGB's and some police officers. Sambo is also used as a sport just like WWE, but I'm not sure if there are any organizations like WWE in Russia or whatever.

Well how do we know if Cyrax is black? just cuz of his skin color? maybe he's Dominican or Guyaneze (sp?) or some other country that has dark skin colored people as well. And I truly don't understand how any other race can be considered as a Chinese "Lin Kuei". Anywayz.
It's all good, Cyrax is one of my favorite characters, I like his cyborg costume, I use it very often, and he has one of the koolest fatalities in MKDA.

In the minds of most people, dark skin (like cyrax's) suggests a black person. There's really no evidence suggesting that he's NOT black. Again, I highly doubt the "sambo" style was intended as a direct insult. However, the fact that it was used for a character who appears to be black demonstrates either ignorance or poor taste on the part of the MK team. Granted, "sambo" is not the most commonly-used racial slurs (in fact I don't know if it would even be considered a racial slur, rather than a general stereotype) but it should certainly be considered careless.

Well, maybe the MK team made the assumption that people wouldn't be so uptight about it. I mean, it's just a fighting style like any other. I personally think it's pretty damn obvious there's not some kind of secret motive behind giving it to Cyrax... This whole discussion is pretty silly, IMO.

Sorry bout the typo it's meant to read 30 percent.

I know what racism is. And MK DA doesn't have it in any shape or form.

if ur country has achieved 'Zen', then more power to you, but sad to say we have not..we have a lot of organizations just based on hating someone because of the color of thier skin an such..anyways, this is getting off topic..kinda...

MK is not racist..this is silly

I don't think MK developers meant for any racial insults. I don't know if many people are strongly offended. I do know that in some situations, legally, one cannot claim ignorance. I can't cheat on my taxes, get busted, then say "Well, I never knew it was against the law. In fact, Its your fault for not teaching me"
OK that is a very different example but if I were developing a game I would try to avoid over-used sterotypes and try to be sencative to others. If I wore orange on St Patricks day and went to an Irish bar I might piss some people off, even if I don't know- I still have to take responsibility.

I could see nobody at Midway noticing pretty easily. Yeah, there's a lot of people on the team, but how many followed development enough to know that? I doubt people that worked on the opening movie or other jobs like that know Cyrax has Sambo or know he's black. Even if they did know those two things, how many people would catch it? I know when I think of Cyrax "robot" comes to mind not "black guy" and I'm a hardcore fan of the story and all that not just some random Midway employee doing marketing.

I'm disgusted with this topic and everyone in it. Why is everyone so conscious of "Politically Correct" stuff?

Sambo is Russian, Despite it's name having connections in other forms.

So really, If you guys want to be racist....Why do the only two black guys in MK:DA have cybernetic implants? I could spin a tale around that if i wanted to, But like i said, Why is everyone so politically correct?
