Should Mortal Kombat return to its 2D format in the upcoming Mortal Kombats? What are some good ideas to improve the existing engine?

Because of mass-appeal of new games, they will NEVER return to the 2D format, unfortunately
but I'm betting they're planning on doing something as a side-game or handheld game in 2D

Yes, but Midway has put themselves in a situation where there isn't room for improvement. In my opinion, Midway has hit its peak with this engine and can't really generate any more fresh ideas.

They must get out of this MKDA engine. They can't start comin out with all these games that play exactly the same. Notice the differences between the classic games, they're pretty noticable after each one. Yeah, Deception is a step way up from MKDA, but it just plays the same, and basically feels the same. They should get some new graphics, new player movements, new atmospheres for levels, new types of music (more melodic, they're just a bunch of noises now), things like that. Just my opinion...
Peace.

They should really revisit an older time in MK....
err well MK7 will probably be a step forward in the timeline, probably involving Shao Kahn, the One Being and maybe Onaga again
but for MK8 or any side game, go back in time! Do one of the ORIGINAL Mortal Kombats. Do an EDENIAN Mortal Kombat...

damn I'm just actually itching to play UMK3 :/

There is no such thing as an Edenian Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat only exists between Outworld and Earthrealm. Mortal Kombat was created by the Elder Gods at the request of Wise Men from the east to defend Earthrealm from falling into the rule of Outworld.

I am really not sure how they could improve on Mortal Kombat from this point on, aside from a few minor things. Whatever they do in the future will be a suprise for me now.

Um yeah there is. That's what Edenia had I think....and then the wisemen received visions of Shao Kahn's takeover so they did it too

Well I think the next step should be graphical, a return to photorealism. So many polygons that they look like REAL REAL people..I think that'd get media attention. They need to do it with real people too

.

Wrong. The Elder Gods rule ALL realms, and make sure everything goes smoothly between them. Mortal Kombat was created by them as a sort of failsafe to keep neighboring realms from conquering each other unconditionally. That's how Edenia, Zaterra, and a whole bunch of other realms got fused with Outworld: they lost 10 tournaments in a row. It's been widely known by now, with referrences in the games to confirm it.

I agree, since MK7 will, most likely, be the LAST MK in the storyline, lets see how it got to this point. Let's see the MK tournament where the original Kung Lao was defeated, or the Edenian MK.

I want the next mk fighting game to be 2-d and have mk2 graphics and umk3 fighting engine that would own.Sadly i doubt Boon will ever go back to 2-d hes been brainwashed by society to believe that the game needs to be3-d to keep up with the other 3-d fighters that is not true at all mk would do better if it went back to its roots. And why the hell is Boon making another mk adventure game wasnt subsmyth a lesson jesus i swear i think hes trying to ruin his own franchise sometimes.

I want a fan service add on to a 3D game where you can choose to play it in 2D mode UMK3 style.

MKD was a chance to take a step towards a future. They could have revised the engine, made it tight and balanced, and taken a step towards the level of gameplay we see in, say, Virtua Fighter 4.

That is what they did with the 2D games. Each added onto and refined the previous, working up to UMK3. They just have to do the same again.

I think MKDA was a good basis for starting the engine, because the gameplay was fairly unique amongst 3D fighters. They just have to aggressively refine it towards true high level play.

The problem there is, it will have a steaper learning curve and people will get pissed at it.

So i guess this whole thing is moot. F' it.
