after defeating the first boss,and wait on the bridge(in ko-op mode) your oartner will say "Look the moon"

Perhaps it represents night time (seeing as though the moon appears at night) which may secretly portray the place is overpowered by darkness... hence the evil forces. Or something lol, I can see no reason. It's just stages with a moon in, no real reason.

Yeah, you unlock one of the items by throwing someone towards the moon on the pit there also if you watch you'll see a witch or something fly by it.

For MK 1, if you fight on the pit 1 I believe you fight Reptile if you do something but can't remember at the moment lol.
