Imagine that Mortal Kombat started out now in this generation of games instead of when arcades were still popular. Still following the original story, let's think of CGI openings to the games from MK1-MK4 (Well I guess MK4 had an opening but nothing like the ones now)

Mortal Kombat

(scenes opens to a sunset with Raiden narrating)

There is a tournament fought with nobility and honor host by the Shaolin Monks of the Order of Light. The Great Kung Lao, the Champion of Mortal Kombat had succeeded in saving Earth 50 years prior, but the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung, the one who Lao had defeated returned.

(Shang Tsung comes in, in his withered old man appeareance)

Along with an old pupil...

(Goro appears and roars)

Kung Lao battled long and hard against Goro..

(Lao and Goro go at it for a bit until Goro wins the fight)

But he could not defeat the Shokan Prince. This victory plunged the tournament into dark times as Shang Tsung would draw closer and closer to unleashing a dark power onto Earthrealm. 9 tournaments have been won, should they win this time. Earth will be destroyed.

(Cut the Shaolin Temples and it eventually pans down to where we see Liu Kang meditating)

But there are warriors, 7 will decide the outcome. The battle for Earth begins...

(We then go into a quick action clips with Johnny Cage standing in front of a large crowd, holding an award in his hands. Then we see two jeeps speeding along a Hong Kong dock, Kano appears and jumps onto the Special Forces truck where we see Sonya... then we see Sub-Zero with his powers of freezing, and we see him decapitate a man, who's blood spills onto the ground, from that it cuts to Scorpion rising from Hell. Then we see a ship sailing to an island...)

Only 1 will defeat Goro and Shang Tsung and save Earth.... Mortal Kombat begins...
