Pub: Midway Dev: Midway Release: Arcade, 1995
With a few more characters, Mortal Kombat 3 bumped the total number of playables to 15. The new trick this time around were the Animalities where a fighter could turn into a critter and then deliver some Fatality action on the opponent. But the real news here is the graphical upgrade after two years of development that made the background much more interesting to look at and the moves that much more spectacular. Missiles flew out of a cyborg's chest and bombs started to get tossed around the screen.
Excluding the expanded version, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, this was to be the last foray for the series in two dimensions. After this title, the series goes polygonal and moving in and out of the screen gains importance. Some may say this is good, but for those who want the action fast and to the point, this is the final version of the game as it was originally imagined.
September 15, 2004 - This our chance to do it! Now we can finally step away from the burdens of a polygonal world and engulf ourselves in memories -- memories of an ancient time when men were men, women were women, legwarmers were legwarmers, and your average arcade game was good and not covered in nacho cheese. We remember, and so does Midway. With Midway's Arcade Treasures 2, you too can experience the joys of non-polygonal gaming as it existed over a decade ago. Expected on the timeless entertainment compilation are games like A.P.B., Arch Rivals, Championship Sprint, Cyberball 2072, Gauntlet 2, Hard Drivin', Kozmik Kroozr', Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat III, NARC, Pit Fighter, Primal Rage, Rampage World Tour, Spy Hunter 2, Timber, Total Carnage, Wacko, Wizard of Wor, Xenophobe, and Xybots. In addition to the games, Midway also provides histories of the titles and interviews with some of the game creators. Do you remember 1995? Clinton was rocking out in the White House and Monica Lewinsky was just starting her internship position. Meanwhile, gamers were getting use to the gory stylings of the first two Mortal Kombat games. Ah, the days of innocence. After getting used to all of the fatalities, babalities, friendships and other secrets, 1995 brought alongMortal Kombat 3. Want to know a little bit about the game, it's history, and see some media...? Look down and enjoy. Leading all the way up to Arcade Treasure's release later this October, we're going to offer a day-by-day profile of each of the games to be included on the disc (with movies, too). Today's game of yore is Mortal Kombat 3 :

I really don't know. It's too annoying to even bother with anymore. I don't really even care at this point since I'm not going to buy it.

They mean that Mortal Kombat 3 was to be only 15 fighters. Ultimate MK3 was never an idea until after MK3 was out close to about a year, and Midway realized that players missed the older fighters. That's when they went back to reshoot for the older fighters. MK3 was Midway's final version of the game as they imagined. Sucks though, because UMK3 kicked MK3's butt out of the water. Hope that helps.

This is very misleading, and false advertising. |
Actually, I think they were planning to put out UMK3 from the beginning. I even remember reading about UMK3 in magazines before MK3 came out. I forget the mag (probably a GamePro) but there was a big preview for MK3, and it said something about how Midway was planning to release an updated chipset for the game around the end of the year, adding more characters and stuff like that.

When I first saw stuff for MK3, one thing I saw was the Kitana vs. Scorpion in hell, and other returning characters. I was so excited that a new MK was gonna come out. When I looked for more articles, all I could find was stuff for MK3, I was like WTF? I was dissappointed playing MK3, then UMK3 came out, and I knew I wasn't seeing things. Ermac was the first character I used in the arcade.
