Any players who live within traveling distance of Philly listen up. I'm taking this time to ask any and all players who'd like to take part in a UMK3 tournament at North East Championships 6 to come and represent. I am most likely running it along with the Prophet, just awaiting confirmation from the tournament coordinator Eric to make sure it's OK and the day isn't too filled up. You guys got over 9 weeks to plan it out if you want to go, I'd like to see a decent turn out, I'm going to talk to everyone I know who doesn't come to this site as well.

Further update on the UMK3 tournament for all of you whom I KNOW are interested...this is a post actually from last year's NEC tournament that Eric re-added from the Prophet.
Attn: All Those who whill be attending NEC6:
(As Eric already stated above) EWA Shock and I (with much thanks to Mike/aka GosBroDansFan for all his contributions) will be running an Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 tournament. Arcade sticks will be provided/on hand, as well as PS-to-USB converters for those wishing to use their own stick/pad/whatever.
For those who are wondering how this is going down we're gonna purchase a bare-bones PC (strictly for fighters) and run UMK3 off MAME, so this is the actual arcade game that will be played...we're gonna go all out with an S-Video TV for the sharp graphics and such...
Anyone who's interested in playing (or if you have any questions/concerns/etc.) post here or PM either me or EWA Shock.
This is gonna be the UMK3 *Universal Championship* people, so start practicing so you can represent come Dec. 4th.

No I'll be using stick, but if anyone wants to challenge me on keyboard as Ermac or Kung Lao only I'll gladly oblige them.

glad to hear it, i think its pretty disrespectful to use a keyboard in a UMK3 'arcade' tournament.
im probably better on a n64 controller or ps2 or watever they have but im stickin to the stick as well.

Well, the whole place is a console based tournament so anyone can use whatever they want, if people want to use PSX controllers to play UMK3, they can, it'll be available. I really hope there's more people who want to show up.

I just put it in the first post. The more people who show, the more the winner gets. If there are 16 players 2nd place will also get some cash. Any less than 16 players and the total prize money goes to first place. There's a good chance we'll hold mini tournys on both Saturday and Sunday, but we're hoping at least one day a lot of players will show up. It's $5 to enter, so if there's 15 players, first place gets $75, but if there's 16 players, the total would be $80, so the split would be like $65 for first place, $15 for second place. If a magical amount of players shows up, 3rd place will also get some, but never beyond 3rd place.
For a game like MvC2 that can have 128 players (seriously I have seen brackets with my own eyes of 100+ players in a big tourny like this), at $10 per head entry fee, that's a total cash pot of $1,280, and usually the split is like 70/20/10% unless there's no building cover charge, ($10 cover charge to get in to take care of costs which more than reasonable for NEC). That means first place in MvC2 would get $896. These tournaments take all day. The biggest UMK3 tournament I have ever been involved in was maybe 14 players and that's terrible. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get around when the big UMK3 tournys were happening in the 90s, and now dwindling player lists are all you see.
If everyone who has even vaguely mentioned they'll show up does, plus players I know will be there whom I haven't talked to, there's 13 right now, plus of course people I don't know will be there and might want to give it a shot. At NEC4 there were a bunch of random people who played MKT on PSX with us, but we never got a real tournament together.

Unfortunately throwing is a major component of gameplay, eliminating it changes key moments in the game usually in favor of the person who is on the defensive. To prevent a throw you just hold back, at any time, during any move. For instance you cannot be throw while doing a special move, or if you're locked in a containment move if you are holding back, however, here are some times when throws are useful or present. Remember, thows don't do a ton of damage, if you're getting thrown left and right you're in no simpler terms: bad.
Cross up throws on turtling opponents by landing on top of them making it difficult to determine which way is back upon landing, or beating uppercut cross up counters with throws, this is obviously avoidable by uppercutting with D+B.
Throwing people out of special moves (like Kabal's spin) or even on sudden rushes especially the person is obviously pressing forward and cannot be holding back.
As a method to avoid run jab situations against certain characters by letting yourself be thrown setting up possible counters and trying to get on the offensive.
Allowing yourself to be thrown into the corner by some characters, for example the male ninjas, a throw from a ninja results in a free uppercut before they get up, or a free spin from Kabal, etc.
