*Please don't move this to the classic forum, it gets almost no attention...*
Now that you can look back on it do you still think that Mortal Kombat was as good as the games it competed with? Do you even think it was really that great at all?
IMO Mortal Kombat was cool but just under the level of quality that Street Fighter 2 and other fighters produced. The digitized actors, blood, special moves, and fatalities were easily the things that distinguished Mortal Kombat from other games.
What do you think?

I always preferred MK to Street fighter 2 back in the days. MK was just so unique and fun for these reasons: The sweet character designs, the dark-feel atmosphere, the awsomed digitized graphics, the music, the great story and the cool moves really separated Mk from other fighters. Sadly all the things that made the original mk games so sepecial and cool are no longer to be found in the recent MK games.
Ever since MK3, midway has come up w/ the dumbest characters designs ever (e.g striker, Hso Hao, Drahmin....), the dark feel of the game is no where to be found any more, the music has become dull and no longer special, a stupid and messed up story, and just pure crappy gameplay. How I long for Midway to make another impressive mk game.

Darn this was moved to the MK classic forum. Why can't this forum and the general forum be merged?People hardly ever come to this board!!! Darn it.

Yeah I know, the classic forum gets no attention.
Anways...
After playing Street Fighter 2 again I realized that while it is more balanced it's just not as fun as MK 2.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 however....There's just no comparison. I can play Alpha 3 for hours and hours. MKT kinda leaves me bored after a couple minutes.

Mkt does the same to me too. mortal kombat is and always will be my favorite game. most of the new character designs are dumb. i prefere mk over any fighter even more than street fighter, tekken, ect...

Yes it was.
This isn't the midway forums, you can't post something somewhere else just because of inactivity. I happen to visit this section twice a day usually.
The Classic and the General boards should not be merged for obvius reasons
Classic: Most topics relate to the better era of mortal kombat
General: Most topics have absolutely nothing to do with mortal kombat.
Mortal kombat has always had that "cool" looking effect, with the blood and what not. Also some have good gameplay so it's win win.

Yeah, but what's the point in having this forum when most people dont even come to the forum? It's just so annoying when you discover that clever posts in the Classic forum just go unread due to the inactivity of the forum. In order for these threads to be read, they need to be moved to a more active forum. Alright, the general discussion may not be the wisest choice right now....but I think MKO should combine all the very inactive forums (Classic MK Games forums,MK Shaolin Monks forum, Pocket Kombat Discussion, and Mk Movies and Media Discussion) into one forum and should be called "the general Mk discussion forum". This way, I believe the forum would be more active and many posts won't be gone unread. Seriously, what is the point in having a forum when many people dont even post in it? It's a waste of freaken space.

Maybe because us fans of the classic board don't want non-classic stuff posted to the board we frequent? It was hard enough when they lumped MKDA in with this board. The idea of including all the junk from the General board too would be terrible.
To stay on topic, I don't think MK1 had the gameplay to stand up against something like SF2. It had cool graphics, a lot of fan appeal, and a storyline that was OK. MK2 had great graphics a ton of fan appeal, a fantastic storyline, but still not the gameplay to stand up against something like ST.
Really, UMK3 was really when the MK series reached a respectable level of gameplay quality. And then MK4 came out and it went down hill from there...

The Classic board is fine. It doesn't need to be filled with retarded nonsence, and n00bs like the other boards. This board offers refuge, and nostalgia for us old timers, lol.
On Topic:
I loved how MK used digitized actors. It made the game more real, and satisfying. The way GTA in 3d does.
The special moves were unique(some anyways). The characters were transported to a world that relied on magic, and power rather than technology.
MK 3 didn't keep to the beat.
The ninjas became robots, the feudal era arcitecture became the 'hood, and the token black guy turned his arms into bling.
Too many changes, too fast.
The change to modern theme was a step towards the edge of the cliff, MK4 was the leap off of it. The only place left to go, is down...

Well, let's see...
When Mortal Kombat came out in the arcades, I wasn't really big into going out to play video games. I've always been a huge console fan. I remember, getting a copy of MK on Sega Genesis when it first came out. Up until then I had always been into Street Fighter 2 Turbo on SNES.
Now, let's put it this way. SF2 and MK were too TOTALLY different games. You had vivid colors and intense (for it's time) animations in SF2, but a very realistic-dark feeling MK game. I think at the time I was more into Street Fighter, but I think the mark MK made was incredible.
For it's time, MK was incredibly realistic looking. The digitized actors (especially on the arcade) would blow people's minds when seeing them. It's funny to play it now, but even the blood was realistic back then. Tell me you didn't get chills down your spine when the arena would go dark and Scorpion would pull off his mask lighting his opponent on fire? Tell me you didn't spend endless time unlocking Reptile. What about the first time you knocked someone into the pit or went up against Goro. This game really took you for a ride and I loved every second of it.
So, yes, for it's time... GREAT GAME. Actually quite revolutionary. Think about how many MK replica's this game spawned. All of a sudden bloody fighting games popped up everywhere. Nothing touches the original MK though (except MK 2 in my oppinion). That dark and mystic feeling was incredible.
Just my two cents...
