weapons in mk 1 question

i saw that in the options section of mortal kombat 1 you could turn weapons on and off. I kept them on but who do i use them?

Weapons just mean the people's special moves, such as Scorpion's spear or Sub-Zero's freeze. There are no actual weapons like swords in the game.
