What software is used to develope mortal kombat 5? I saw in the making of video, it looked like they were using Macs, which isn't too surprising, but as for the actuall language. Did they use java, or C++, or VB or what. Does anyone know for sure ?

none probably, they probably used an engine

you couldn't actually go into a compiler and draw all of that shit and expect to keep track of it so they use an engine to translate it for them.

I heard somewhere that most games nowadays are programmed in C.

I should think C++

They would have used a program like maya or 3D Studios max to design the backgrounds and character models.. but they would still have to use a language to take that data, and put it to the screen. I should think they would have written their own engine to do all that (as opposed to buying an engine)

you guys don't understand.... they most likely used an engine, most likely bought it or got it for free and probably used something like bryce to make the 3d characters

if you don't understand what an engine is download Mugen, it's free and it's a basic engine for making old school games (like MK1-3, Street Fighter, Capcom vs Marvel, etc). You can easily download sprites from old school games and make dream game for it.

I program in C, C++ and many other languages, it's MUCH to hard to program in just straight C... I guess what you could say is the engine would translate what you want into the C language.

Im sure i read somewhere that for MK6 they are stripping apart their engine and rewriting it from scratch - which would indicate to me they wrote the rendering engine themselves (instead of buying it). It would give them the greatest control over the finished product instead of having to fit in with someone elses engine design. I guess it depends on time constraints, if they were rushed for time, buying an engine would make life easy, but profits would be seriously hurt.

I remember how much of a pain in the butt it was when I was writing my rendering engines - i can only imagine the knightmares some developers have had over whats gone into some of the powerful 3d engines out there now.

I guarantee they programmed the engine themselves. What the frick do you guys think Ed Boon does??? PROGRAMMING. I believe they use Lightwave for 3d design and one of the other apps previously mentioned.
Anyway - they made the game completely. look into it. What programming language I do NOT know- but I'd assume C or C++

Guys, no offense, but, he wants cold hard facts. Not guesses or thoughts. It is pretty obvious in the Making Of MK5 (one of the clips in the Kontent part of MK5) that they used Photoshop for a little bit. And I really doubt they were using macs. I'm also not sure if peeps these days build an entire game off of just one language.

yea it is Maya they use...i posted this awhile ago...i think it in documentary of making the game you see a designer using it to get the animation for cyrax's fatality right. I also know this cause i had downloaded the free program to try and the interface is recognizable in the documetary.

Several weeks ago I visited Midway's employment webpage, all of the listed programming jobs required a great knowledge of C programming, so one would think that Midway games have to be programmed using C.
