People don't like Liu Kang because he's the typical bland hero. He's just there to save the day and that's it. His romance with Kitana was forced and under-developed and aside from that and dying, nothing interesting ever happened to him. He's always the same. A boy scout.
Not to mention it's very hard to take him seriously as the "main hero" when he screeches like a turkey whenever he fights.
People hate Johnny Cage because many feel a movie star character has no place in Mortal Kombat. Like Liu Kang, the only interesting thing to ever happen to him was dying. Then his death was just flat-out ignored like it never happened which didn't help. Like Kang, he never changes and aside from possible comic relief, he adds nothing to the game.
To sum up, many dislike Cage and Kang because they're stale characters who never change and add nothing to the game. Many find Kang uncharismatic and undeserving of being the "hero" and many simply find Cage annoying and meaningless.

One big problem with Liu Kang was that he had so many constant victories. He defeated Shang Tsung in the first tournament which is fine. In MK2 and MK3, he defeated Shao Kahn. In MK4, he defeated Shinnok. Then he was killed in MKDA which was a great move. Unfortunately, they brought him back in MKD. I mean, if they are going to bring him back, it should be later on and not so soon. One thing I do like about Liu Kang in MKD is that he's no longer the main hero.
Johnny Cage's big flaw is basically his storyline. In the first 2 MKs, his storyline is acceptable and all even though it's not great. However, the rest of his storyline is utter shit. Now, originally, he was killed by Shao Kahn's extermination squads but cheated death with the process of the Earthrealm and Outworld merger so he came back, helped out his friends, and then went to the afterlife. Of course, John Vogel retconned this to those bits never happening which also cuts out the MK4 bio stuff. His MK3 - MK: DA storyline was very, very crappy. Of course he gets killed off and is resurrected by Onaga to become one of his servants. That's about it. His storyline has NEVER really built up to anything interesting. It's the same old shit. Now, with Johnny Cage under Onaga's control, there may be chances for redemption in the storyline if it's done properly.

Johnny Cage is my favourite character, but he's always been a guy you either love or hate. For me, that's part of the appeal of him, that he's not super popular and overrated like Scorpion. Johnny badly needs a new storyline direction, but MK is not MK without the cocky pretty boy, imo. He has more personality than a lot of other characters put together, and he's not your typical hero, a big part of him is also out for himself, while still involved with saving Earth.
He adds a very important lighter touch to the series, a little humour, but just enough without going too far (like Bo Rai Cho). Johnny Cage needs a more active role in the story, one that does justice to him as a longtime MK veteran, and one of the most well rounded fighters. Plus they need to explain what exactly he was doing when he was previously supposed to be dead (Vogel retconned his death, which ended up a mess).

PQ5 hit it on the nose. cage is just bullshittin the whole time and hes a hollywood coked up cocksucker. he thinks its all a game and thats why hes dead so nuuuaaaa...
liu kang aint nothing special and everybody thinks he is the star of the game or the hero or something stupid. hes just an annoying karate guy that gets shoved down our throats by the makers of the game.
personally i think there shouldnt be any heros or stars of the game, they should just let the player decide which side to be on and which character they make the hero.

I liked and disliked things about both of them.
Liu Kang:
Pros: He is a talented fighter.
Cons: I don't find his frequent victories too realistic. Honestly, he's just a guy who's very, very good at martial arts, but that doesn't put him on a level of killing a former Elder God.
He makes the most irritating noises when you fight with him.
He doesn't actually ever have a personality, really. He just saves the day.
Kitana is Rain's girl. Seriously, Liu Kang, that's not cool.
Johhny Cage:
Pros: A movie star enters a tournament over the fate of the earth for publicity. Funny because it's true kind of thing.
Cons: Retconning is a terrible, terrible thing. There are clever ways to avoid continuity issues, rather than just saying 'Oops, that didn't happen, sorry guys, my bad.'
In MK2, he left a green trail after the Shadow Kick. What was up with that?
Those sunglasses.

I don't think Liu Kang and Johnny Cage are the ones the creators are shoving down our throats... Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the overrated pricks that Boon and Co. shoves down our throats. Sub and Scorpion have appeared in EVERY fighting game (MK3 don't count because it was upgraded to UMK) at least Liu and Johnny disappeared for a game or two. Hell Sub-Zero had his own game (which Scorpion was involved) and they also wormed their way into Shaolin Monks (Sub as playable, Scorpion as a boss). If there is anyone who is overly annoying and needs to take a Hiatus from MK it's those two fools.
i think that liu kang is ruined....what they shoulda done, atleast, was let kahn win a few tymes, n then liu comes back to win it, its not much, but its better than: mk1 winner- liu kang, mk2 winner- liu kang, mk3 winner- liu kang, mk4 winner- liu fuckin kang. its a twist no1 wood expect, they beat the game "oh yea, liu won it again.....wait, what the fuck!? kahn won!?!?!"
n i dont even think that cage would be saved by the servant for onaga would bring him up a bit, cuz that would prolly last 1 game, n then what happens after that? cage either dies but stays on earth with the same shit or stay alive n do the same shit
in my opinion, they can stay, but dont give liu all the shine, n jus make cage into a regualr character, not some fuckin show off movie star, if they gunna do that, fuck'em, get rid off them 2

ReckMaverick you got a good point but liu kang is so overdone, lets look at the bruce lee style charcters from various fighting games form the MK time
Law-Tekken
Fei Long-Super SF2
that Kapwan guy from Fatal Fury (i think thats his name)
the list goes on and on and on and on......
now lets look at the sub-zero and scorpion copys from other fighting games.
*jeopardy music plays*
...
...
...
*DING*
none, i think they are slightly overdone but they are so original, none else can overdo them.
point is lie kang style characters existed before MK, but sub-zero characters didnt so its alot harder for them to be overdone

I think the difference between Scorpion and Sub-Zero's roles and Liu Kang's role is that Scorpion and Sub-Zero have been in every game (well, sort of. One of Sub-Zero's family has), but have grown in every game. Liu Kang has been the same story, personality, and same everything over and over again, and always wins the tournament, which gets a little old. Also, the Turkey noises.

its very unfair to say that they should be hated when they fight well, but Liu (aka "turkey") as many ppl say, makes stupid noises, (not my oppinion, but...) and Johnny Cage is the movie star type of guy, which, in the world of MK, doesn't fall into place, tho that said, he can do all the super-natural sh*t too, and like i say, he fights well for a mortal.

Kung Lao did not win MK2. MKD tells us about Liu Kang's FOUR victories in Mortal Kombat (MK1, MK2, MK3 and MK4). It is possible that nobody beat or even fought Kahn himself during MK2, but beat Shang Tsung and the rest of Outworld's fighters. Kahn's army must have lost somehow, or the Sindel ressurection plot of MK3 would not be needed.
Liu Kang was the champion from MK1 right until the beginning of MKDA, he beat Shang Tsung in MK1, Shao Kahn in MK3/UMK3/MKT and then Shinnok in MK4/MKG. Kung Lao sadly has never defeated the main bad guys, he was almost killed by Kahn in MK3.

^Actually, it seemed as though Kung Lao intended to lose to Shao Kahn so he could fake his death and retire from fighting. I like both, all they need is more story developments, besides guys Liu Kang (along with Kung Lao) is getting his own game, so we'll probably see more development on his character.

but thats the thing rite there, LIU KANG IS ALWAYS THE HERO!!!!! the least they culd do, even if for one game, let someone else be the hero.
that is what i think has gotten ppl to disliking liu kang.
as for johhny cage, hm now, lets see, he's just a movie star, nothing that special about him and two words to sum-up "punching bag".

That doesn't really tell us why we should be grateful for Liu Kang. I'm hoping that MKSM gives Liu personality beyond "unbeatable goody two shoes". MK1 and MK2 were Liu Kang in his prime. In MK1 he was the underdog who triumphed against Shang Tsung to save the world (come on, he wasn't the most obvious choice for MK1 winner). And then MK2 gave him new moves and a makeover to suit his hero status. After that, he got really stale, nothing changed, he was just an invincible boy scout, kinda like Superman (another boring character, imo). His MKDA death was a breath of fresh air for MK. Maybe MKSM will be the game to make Liu Kang a likeable character again.

I hate to admit it...I actually started liking Johnny Cage. At first I always thought of him as a joke character but lately I noticed was that was what was so great about him. He's the comic relief, the type of guy who just takes everything around him as if all part of a game. As for him needing a new story...he is already one of the more unique characters in the entire MK line up. How many other actors do you see? All other characters have their little niche you might say. You have your ninjas, solderier/cops, sorcerers, gods, etc. All plural but only one clown *grin* Mortal Kombat would be too bland with out the occassional (sp?) laugh created by Johnny Cage.
Now as for Liu Kang, I have little to say that is good. He was a good idea to start with but....lets just say Kung Lao is the better monk in my opinion. Liu has those annoying sound effects and like so many others have said he is just so bleh.
