I believe he was originally meant to be of chinese descendant, but after the MK1 movie they liked the Aussie side of him so much that it was changed?

if you play as Kano in Konquest mode, I think there
are 'cockney' phrases in his instructions,
and also his accent in the movie is british.

Anyway, read the rules and don't do it again. Oh, and by the way, he was originally Japanese-American, but then they turned him Aussie after Trevor Goddard played him in the movie.

Before I close this, I have to chime in...
Despite the accent, there was never an official retcon of his lineage (that he was an American baby abandoned in Tokyo). There are enough British schools in Asia that teach English, so it's possible that despite his accent, he was still raised in Tokyo. Heck, maybe he spent a few years in Australia too.
