I am talking arcade only and the orginals only, no UMK3 or MKT.
I would have to say MK3 cuz i remember playing it arcades so many times and it blowed me away everytime, so many great fatalities and characters too.

Personaly, i liked MK2 alot better. I remember playing it alot more than MK3 and enjoying it more because it seemed harder IMO. With the whole dark feel to it and such, i LOVED it.
I didnt play MK3 as much at the time because it never had Baraka, Scorpion, and such in it. Also, i beat it pretty fast.

I actually vowed to someday get a UMK3 machine..so MK3, definately. On and btw I'm just going to build the UMK3 machine myself.
But yeah MK3 had so many more cool features, especially the ultimate kombat kode as well as other kombat kodes

Even though i love MK3 i have to say MK2 i never seen so many people line up in arcades ever.Just imagine how many quarters where in the machine.Everybody knows MK2 was the best mk game ever and still is. Nothing can beat that game nothing the characters in the game looked beautiful the music was superb. And seeing Shao Kahn for the first time was amazing listening to him taunt you was cool as hell.Mk2 totally owned at the arcades it fixxed everything that was wrong with mk1 and made it much, much better graphicwise and gameplay wise and it has the best and most original fatalities.

MK3. I played that almost tons in the arcades. And in arcades in my town MK3 is still as regular of a game as the Dance Dance Revolution series.

MK II, easily.
I just remember heading up the block to catch the school bus, and stopping in the deli...and seeing Mortal Kombat II, the arcade game...and seeing this guy use some unfamiliar looking character, and then I heard the announcer say "Shang Tsung Wins"...in such a dark tone...so much darker than MK I...and I was like...WOW, this is totally badass....Shang Tsung? playable? and young? WTF?
I was a big MK fan after MKI...but MKII just pretty much had me hooked throughout the entire series, through thick and thin, I would just be a devoted fan of MK. MKII just owned.

MKII definitely had the biggest impact of fighting games in history. I remember how people were saying "Oh it's not going to be violent, no blood, no fatalities, it's going to be like Street Fighter." Well it was far more violent than MK1, more brilliant, etc, and I'm pretty sure it's been listed as the most popular fighting game ever, not just the MK genre, I'll have to check up on that though.

couldnt have said it better myself. mk2 was more popular and had bigger impact but around my arcade area mk3 was the big one because well we didnt have mk2 around my place.
I never saw people line up for MK2, course I may have been a bit too young since I was in 3rd grade when it came out.
But when MK3 came out I remember the movie theatre have line rails for people waiting to play. Not only that, but hordes and hordes of people standing around the game watching. It was pretty sweet.

I'm going to have to go with Mortal Kombat 2. I remember playing it the first time in a Burger and Dog joint when I was little. More characters, (Including Shang Tsung and Reptile!!!!), secret characters to fight (which I found out about later), 2 Fatalities, cool moves, Babalities, Friendships, more stage Fatalities, a scarier Goro (Kintaro), and Shao Kahn who I could never beat until years later. And playing against my brother and sister... priceless. MK3 just didn't up the ante as much for me. Motaro was easier than Kintaro in my opinion, I was older so Shao Kahn wasn't as hard, and they got rid of great MK2 characters.
MK3 was good, but it just wasn't as good a sequel to MK2, as MK2 was to the original. =P

Around me MK3 was big, but MK2 definitely OWNED the arcades. Bigger lines, more rumors, generally more of a buzz around the whole scene. Places actually gave prizes to people for beating the game. A local Nathan's even had a MKII tournament!
YEARS later, in 2001, I stumbled upon an MKII machine in a hotel lobby. To my amazement, a crowd formed around the machine, and people started LINING UP THEIR QUARTERS ON THE RIM. It was so awesome, it was like 1994 all over again. I think that's a testament to the staying power of this game.

What a great thread. Too bad we can't have threads like this in the Deception Forum. Anyways....
I remember (like all of you) way back in 1994 when people lined up in the arcades to play. MK3 was popular and had more stuff to it, but didn't seem to have that "umph", you know? Know if Ultimate MK3 was the first version of MK3 to come out, it would have been the shit and would have probably generated as much excitement as the 2nd.
