Why do people not like mk3?

So true lol. Brutalities were the worst. It's as if when they do the combo, they constantly go back in time 1/10 of a second for every hit and eventually at the end there's 20 characters overlapping different points in time and they kill them all at once. It's the only way I can explain the redundant bones. Well there is another explanation, they did it on purpose so people will talk about it...FOR 10 YEARS.

I haven't played MK3 in a long time, but I it's my least favorite MK game.
I didn't mind the changes. The run button, the combos, Sub-Zero unmasked, the cyborgs, and the post-apocalyptic feel of the game took a little getting used to, but didn't bother me any.
My problems with the game are/were:
Roster- No Scorpion, no Kitana, no Mileena, no Reptile, not even Raiden. By then I was SICK of Liu Kang. I'd already lost interest in Jax and I never was really into Shang Tsung. At the time I didn't care about Sektor or Sindel, although I admit I've recently grown to like them. Sonya and Kano were back and I didn't care one bit. Zero interest in Sheeva and I thought Stryker and Nightwolf were just jokes.
With no Scorpion I clung to Cyrax and Smoke at first figuring they could take his place which didn't work. That leaves Kabal, Kung Lao, and Sub-Zero.
I only enjoyed playing as three to five characters out of a roster of 15, which isn't a good start.
Finishers- The majority of fatalities were laughable. There were a couple of good ones, some decent ones, and a lot of crap.
The Friendships were getting old and the Babalities were already played out.
And the Animalities...more trouble then they were worth IMO. You win a round, they win a round, you win the last round, do a Mercy, THEN you could do the Animality, of which there were only 1 or 2 decent or original ones. All the others were pretty lame.
Remember the three arenas, The Balcony, the Bridge and the Soul Chamber? And how if you uppercut someone in the Soul Chamber you go back to the Balcony? And then you're back on the Bridge and back into the Soul Chamber and if you do an uppercut you back in the Balcony again and it kept going until you finished the Soul Chamber without doing an uppercut.
This got annoying real fast.
I was also stuck with the SNES version. The less than steller graphic and sound quality didn't add to my enjoyment of the game.
Considering the game took place in a post-apocalyptic, end of the world enviroment where everybody was dead, you'd think this would be the darkest Mortal Kombat. But with the cartoonish fatalities and some pretty poor character designs (Styker and Nightwolf) the game came across as very goofy, IMO.

Also remember that they couldn't release the game unless it was toned down. They added a warning screen to it, and when the censors viewed it and saw the ridiculous amount of bones and other unrealistically unrealistic concepts to character deaths, they probably said "This is sureal enough that kids won't think about stabbing eachother with sai's etc."
The thing where the stage order resets was a glitch, they made a mistake I believe on the order line up, because if you don't knock them through the Soul Chamber, the Balcony is not the next stage, but if you play through, the Balcony comes much later, and the Street is after it, and the last stage in the line up. This was fixed in Ultimate so I don't think it was intentional and they never bothered fixing it, it added an element of self control. Also if you notice in Ultimate launcher combos don't knock people through the ceiling.

I hate the Soul chamber-Balcony-Bridge problem. It's so annoying. I am so sick of The Bridge because of it. I would die happy if I never fought in that stage again. What really sucks is that The Temple, The Graveyard, Shao Kahn Tower and The Pit 3 are all really cool stages that I don't see as much because of that stupid "feature".
The multiple bones thing is funny.

I feel the exact same way. I even hate the Bridge's music, and the stupid papers flying around, the stage itself is ugly, even though the Street is almost identical it's still better cause of that damn music.

There is a definite order to the stages though in UMK3, you will eventually play the old stages no matter what as long as you play enough, but if you go through and beat the game without losing, you're only going to see the Subway, the Street (if you knock them through) Balcony (vs Motaro) and Pit 3 (vs Shao Kahn). Otherwise when you start a new game, you wind up at the portal again. You have to play other people to see the other stages.

The whole MK3 engine was great, i cant see why people critisize it. MKT was probably the best, i loved the characters, fatalities, fighting engine, story ect.

MKT was great!! i just wish they didn't chop out half of the damn frames it's so jerky compared to UMK3.
I absolutley hate Scorpion's Lair and Shao Kahn's Cave in UMK3. I don't mind the Waterfront or the Desert, because they have better music. To me, music makes the stage. Also, if it has bad music, it could have a good Pit. But, the Pit in Scorpion's Lair is suck butt. I don't mind the Bridge music, but the stage glitch in MK3 is dumb.

Scorpion's Lair had to be the worst stage fatality ever in anything.

Yeah I couldn't believe people some people actually voted for it in the "best stage fatality" thread.
But, call me crazy, I have always had a strange fondness for The Bridge. Maybe because it came up so much, it just felt like MK3's "home" stage to me. So when I see it or hear the music years later, the memories flood back. Maybe the music didn't get on my nerves because the Nathans' I always played at were mad loud, so when I actually did get to hear it it was a treat.

memories pop up a lot on the Soul Chamber and Balcony as well for the same reason. I don't particularly like the Balcony's look, but I love the music, and I love the Soul Chamber's look and music.

I rememeber when MK2 came out, and the almost frenzied atmosphere. You literally had to stand in line for 10-20 minutes just to play.
When MK3 came out, I remember, at the same arcade, maybe 1-2 people playing at any one time. The reaction was the same from those I talked to: hated the 'run' button, hated some of the new characters (Stryker esp.), and thought the fatalities were completely rushed-looking and lame on top of that.
Heck, when UMK3 came out, I remember having to ask the owner to turn the game on! He said "It made too much noise" and "No one played it anyway".
Personally, I think MK3 was decent, but it in no way brings back the fondness of competition that MK2 did.
But, that's just my opinion.

It's kinda sad how there was never really that much serious competition for MK2 MK3 and UMK3 in any one place, today you have to gather people from different states months ahead of time to a major tourny, just to have a few good games that don't count as a real tournament.

I have to agree with most of you about MK3.
But, it still is one of my faves. I got it for snes when it came out. It was also the fist Mk I sat down and played for hours insted of 2 or 3 matches at the arcade. Stryker and Nightwolf have to be at least 4 or 3 on the worst fighting game chars in the world list. Most of the music sucked butt. The stages were weak as hell. I went back and played it last week and it put me too sleep. I hope the new one isnt as screw up as mk3 if it is I will cry.

Okay, so I lost my Kaillera virginity last night and it was amazing. It reminded me why I love UMK3 the best. Playing against humans again was a blast, and really showed me how great this game can be. Just a whole lot of frenzied, fast action - but very controlled and immensely playable. Later on I started a MKII game and it was a HUGE adjustment. I still had a blast with that one and will probably play some again tonight, but after all that MK3 has to offer I just felt... "handicapped" going back to MKII.
It's like MK3 just kicks things into high gear and you get into this zone when you're playing. Playing MKII after that is like slamming the breaks. Not knocking MKII because I love it, but I'm just saying what I noticed when I played them back to back.
