24 Characters?

A long time ago, it was said that there would be 24 characters, divided into three sets known as classic, MKDA, and new/original.

But it seems from a variety of sources(some being hidden links to insiders), we've seen a reasonable amount of the final cast, and it seems both classic and MKDA returning character limits were breeched(assuming that the characters mentioned will eventually be confirmed).

But some time passed since, and during the X-Box interview(I think), the question was asked again, and now the answer was something along the lines of "we can't provide a given number at this time."

Eh? What the fuck happened to 24? You guys seemed so sure last time we checked, now the info is under wraps again. But thankfully, the recent interview with Boon has shed some light on the situation by saying there will be more than 24. Whether that means hidden, konquest, or even just a referrence to the peeps in the prison stage, I don't know.

So what do you guys think?

Personally I think its all gone to pot and Boon & Co. arent sure who to class as being IN the game as far as numbers go. Cos we got the New/Classic/Returnin character set, plus people mentioned in Konquest/Intro and now this prison stage like you said.
I personally think in terms of playable, we'll have more than 24. But in total, sheesh who knows!
Hmm, I hope it's about hidden characters but I heard a some time ago that there were going to appear all the characters that have appeared in previous MKs. Maybe the characters seen in the Prision Stage (Jarek, Drahmin, Jade(?) and Fujin) are exactly that, just cameos.

FROM A RECENT INTERVIEW:

"The third video is an interview with the man himself, Ed Boon. While brief, he discusses various details about the game, such as the main grid of characters, gameplay improvements, and the Krypt and Konquest mode. As for the the number of characters that will be playable in the final game, the given number by Ed is 24."
I don't see how this suggests there is more than 24 playable fighters, the boss probably won't be playable.

Also, my running tally suggests we are right on track with Ed Boons's number.

didnt boon say in the 3rd gamesport video that there will be an amount of 24 characters + real hidden ones? I have listened to the video 3times now and I am sure he sait it that way which means that there will be more then 24 characters.

At first I thought 24 characters was crappy. I wanted MORE! But then I found out some of the characters and the return of Kabal and was like, "Maybe 24 ain't such a bad number if the rest of the characters are as kick ass!". Don't we know almost ALL of the 24 characters in this game though now!? So, NOW 24 is NOT enough! I think Ed and the team possibly have 24 characters already implemented into the game, and seeing as they still have some time to work on this game, they are adding more. Hell... I'll be happy with this game no matter what. But, I am hoping they add everyone's favorite Ketchup and Mustard! And please Ed..... make Shao Khan be part of Deception! Maybe have Khan be the Dragon King? wink
He was taken out of Deadly Alliance WAY too easy.

What I got from the interview (Gamespot Video one) is that there is 24 Charaters but he said there is more in the game but he didnt actually say there is more than 24 playable he just said there was more in the game itself which we know is true with appearances from all past MK'ers.

I don't know what to think on how many is in the game, I'm hoping its more than 24 but Boon has not said there is more than 24 playable just yet.. There maybe a couple or more being secret and unlockable but I think if there is more then it will probably end up being 30 if not then 24 is fine.

Ah, I smile when I think about mk1. How the awesome characters that started the game have evolved so much! I feel so proud of characters like Shang tsung, Sonya, Reptile and Cage.

they r cameos, i've posted about this before but no one replied. look at their clothes. they r the same from the last game they appeared in. absolutely nothing has been done to change their look which suggests they rnt playable. look at sonya and kano in MK2. they kept their outfits from MK1 and they wernt playable

Good points. But I wouldnt jump to any conclusions about this. While those characters may not be playable, there is a possibility that there are more than 24 characters. The best thing to do is not to take anything as fact until Midway reveals it.

i think there are going to be more playable characters and hidden characters in the game... but it is possible he is just talking about characters cameos

Well im hoping there will be more than 24. And there probably will. Back when MKDA was going to come about, they had said there was going to be 15 characters in MKDA. But it turned out to be 21 i think. So anything could happen.

I agree that the characters shown in the prison and other pics are most likely cameos. Why put them in as playable and not change their outfits? Everyone else has had theirs changed. Look at Noob, Ermac and the rest.

I've always said that I believe there will be more than 24 characters. The more important characters from MKDA are missing. Shang, Quan, Mavado, Nitara and some others. If anyone should be in, it should be them. They are more than likely hidden in this game.

i think there are going to be more playable characters and hidden characters in the game... but it is possible he is just talking about characters cameos


Boon could mean they are doing what marvel vs capcom did. The begining character selection screen could fit about 40 characters including the secret spots. Then once the character selection screen was full they put the pic of the next secret character in an area above the selection screen. or they will do what they did with mokap and blaze.

Well I'm thinking back to how early in progress it was when that 24 number was thrown out there...I mean it was quite a while ago, since then any number of things could have happened...maybe they decided that 24 was just a low number, and the decided to add more because they have so many great characters to choose from...maybe their main story point changed a bit and as a result that needed to add certain characters to make the new twist work...either way I, for one, am glad that there will be more than 24, I mean it's not a tiny number, but for an MK that is going to be as big as it's sounding so far, 24 just didn't seem enough to me especially since over the years they have created some pretty awesome characters.

According to realiable sources and such, there will be more than 24 characters, but you may not be able to see them on the character select screen. They may be chosen like the blaze/mokap way, or perhaps a button combination. I wouldnt be suprised if they used the old modern day technique, when at the beginning of the round, you hold a few buttons, and the characters explodes into a different character.

Overall though, i'm sure there will be more than just 24. There are way more characters to be added. Shang, Quan, and Mavado are some of them.

i think the final amount of characters wil be around 30 including hidden

What happened to my original title? confused Mods, you could have at least left a note in my post saying why it was changed.

Anyway, I appreciate the replies guys. I too think they might be going with the MvsC2 idea(only not as many characters).

i hope theres more than 24, but if theres only 24 playable, thats fine too, i mean, look at the one game they made with the highest amount of characters playable, MK trilogy, it had over 40 characters i think, 43 i think, i forgot exactly, but you could even play as the 4 classic bosses, anyway... i really hope shao kahn makes an appearance somewhere in this game, maybe he'll be a character ya meet in konquest mode in the netherealm or something? i cant wait for this game, smile

Im hoping that the secret characters will be shown in the select screen after you have unlocked them. I dont like what they did in MKDA when you had to go to a character and hold start and whatever to choose that character. Its just annoying having to do that all the time. They should do it like in UMK3 when they had the dragon logo and then once you unlocked them their face would show.

Somehow I think Boon is trying to relive MK2, lacing the game with more secrets than you can shake a stick (and possibly false leads like the "Kano Transformation"). I'd expect anything, definately more than the 24 standard characters.
