MKI featured an old man (Tsung) that wasn't all that powerful looking in terms of his size and physical attributes...he had GORO fill that void.

MKII featured KINTARO, and Kahn! Both bosses were large, and very powerful.

MK3 also had Kahn and Motaro, both were big and BAD ASS.

The TREND im getting at, is that bigger is better? I sometimes think so, and sometimes not. Sure a bigger end boss makes for a cinematic fight and makes you say "wholy fuck, i have to fight that thing?!?!" But these BIG boss type characters have little stealth, all they have are huge arms the better to throw you with.

Don't get me wrong, i LOVE the Dragon Kings look. But i sometimes wonder what a final boss would be if he was a crafty, stealthy Shujinko old man style fighter that was very gifted in martial arts. Maybe that was the DA?!?!

To me, bigger is better.

Shinnok, Quan Chi and Shang(not MK1) all made sorry bosses imo. I can't stand fighting someone who is equal to you for a final boss. I want something that bigger and better then you, since once you beat it, it gives a real feel of completetion.

Shang in MK1 was ok, since he was floating which gave him speed and he transformed into everyone.

But I still have to say that I like the big bosses.

Neither really.

Shang was an old man who you looked at and thought you could walk all over. That was your mistake.

Kintaro looked like he was going to crush you! He did!

Sometimes smaller guys are cool as they lure you into a false impression. They might had speed or some very powerful attacks. Big guys look the part and play it well. They have the intimidation factor and it's off putting to the opponent.

Both scenarios work well for bosses.

Unless you count Shao Khan, MKD is the first one to feature an oversized end boss. I like that. Save the best for last - and make Kitana or Liu Kang the sub-boss.

A boos has to look big and powerful in order to cause shock or excitement.

In Mk1 Tsung was perfect, but only because we had a very low number of fighters, he was amazing.

Now, it would just suck to defeat a high number of warriors and when you get to the final point, you face a normal human like boss. It has to be big and shocking.

No matter who the boss or sub-boss is, they should NEVER be immediately playable. That was one of the things I really disliked about MK4 and MKDA. Bosses are supposed to be more powerful than you, and making that character playable means they have to tone them down a lot. The best examples of small, nimble non-playable boss types are found in MKII (Jade, Smoke and Noob).

I'm backing up Bezou. I agree, in MK4 and MKDA when you make it to the end it's like... "Hey, I've fought that dude in Versus 20 times already." or "Oh, Shang's the boss?... well I'm playing as Shang aswell." It's like getting to the end of an adventure game and the boss is one of the clones you've been killing throughout the game. It's not to exciting or intimidating. Bosses should definely be POWERFUL and menacing.

I prefer the Big Bosses! Much like one of my favs, Eyedol from Killer Instinct.

I agree, bosses should be huge. It's been a part of Mortal Kombat, even since the first game.

Even if Shang looked frail, he was still much more menacing than the fighters that you could choose. He had the ability to do whatever you did, he floated..

I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't mess with a guy who was always in the air. That's almost like an infinite Jump Kick. ;P

I agree that the end boss (or bosses) should not be immediately playable. I think that was a big failing in both MK4 and MK:DA. It's far more fun to work up to something you haven't previously encountered.

Big or small doesn't really matter to me. I'd like to see something new, but the large monster-type bosses are fun, too. Kitana would be a cool sub-boss for a change. Just beef up her fan moves, give her more speed and some kind of energy or magic ability, and she'd kick ass (in my opinion, of course).

I kind of like the bigger more stronger bosses because when you go into fight them you're kind of intimidated and dont really know what to do until you get a strategy to defeat them. But with Small Bosses you can under-estimate them (Like I did with Shang Tsung in MK1) and they'll end up pulverizing you. Either way for me I like both sides.

I dont know about you, but when I think of a boss, I think of someone who is a challenge, who has more than 2x the stgength fo those you ahd to defeat to get to him. Some one who you wouldnt want to mess with. To me this is A BOSS. I could only hope they continue with this way of thinking, someon who looks liek they will kick your ass and kick it hard. someone who takes 1/4 of your life with 1 hit, and with the muscles the size of bowling balls! This is truely a boss!

i think it should be sum1 like shang tu sung agian....can transform into anyone all powerful....damn....or sum1 like metal gear solids phyco mantis! follows/studys your fighting style as u play the game then kicks your ass at the end....would be a good idea for mk7 if u think bout it ...then the boss could be shuinkugrin

I agree with everyone who thinks the Boss should always be big, crazy, and super strong. IMO a boss just isnt a boss if he's not all that.

Thats why i loved MK2/3 so much. You would fight a huge Sub-boss, and just when you thought it was over you would fight Shao Kahn next who was not only cheap, but insanely powerful if you didnt know what you were doing.

I like it better when bosses are only big and powerful. Afterall its the FINAL character your fighting, thus should be the hardest and most intimidating.

Overall the bigger bosses give you more of a satisfactory win when you beat them. I like both but the bigger bosses have definately seemed to be more liked. Shao Kahn, Goro, and Kintaro will all be welcomed back as bosses before Shang Tsung, Shinnok, or Quan Chi. Bosses and sub-bosses should also not be playable, that cheapens them.

Although I like the bigger bosses better, a really quick stealth-like sub-boss would be nice. Anyone remember the Final Fight games? I think on the second one they had a level boss called Rolento who has also been on a few other games and I found him to be more difficult and challenging than any of the oversized musclebound bosses. I think someone like him would make a good sub-boss.

Another idea I've been thinking of...wouldn't it make sense if the battle plan or the cast of people you had to fight would be mostly your enemies or people you have no friendship with? And like your main enemy would be the sub-boss with the boss being either the main good or bad guy depending on what alignment your character is? For example, if I picked Sonya, I wouldn't be fighting Jax or Cyrax...the sub-boss would be like Kano, Kira or Jarek and then the boss would be the Dragon King. Or if I picked Mileena I wouldn't fight Baraka or Reptile (depending on their storylines of course...just making examples), Sindel or Jade would be the sub-boss with maybe Raiden or Liu Kang being the main boss.

Maybe instead of your main enemy being a sub-boss, they could have like a "Grudge Match" right before u fight the sub-boss where you would face your rival. Sonya would fight Kano, Mileena would fight Kitana, Scorpion would fight Quan Chi, etc.

Let me know what you guys think.

I think it's a great idea. It would work well with the MK games because almost every character has some kind of arch-nemesis or rival that they hate more than the others.

Other than strength, bosses should ALWAYS do dog moves. Just like shao kahn and kintaro in MKII. The main advantage they had over a fighter was that they could throw in cheap shots much more easily and quickly than a normal person could. I know its one of the most annoying parts of fighting them, but it makes it so much more sotisfying when you finally manage to beat them, knowing that you were able to outsmart an AI programed to cheat you. And by looking at the DK, i'd say he's one of those fighters, strong and knows how to fight dirty!!!
Well, thats just my 2cents smile

I like the Big powerful make you shit your pants BOSS. But they need to get hit by the same moves that everyone else gets hit by. You played all the way to the end and now all your moves don't work on the boss. You can't throw the boss. Your spear does not work. lol sorry your favorite move does not hit. Your combos are batted away like a small bug. The boss has unblockable moves up the ying yang. Strong is one thing CHEAP is another. I want a fair hard fight. I would not mind a small nimble but powerful boss. But he has got to talk shit when you fight him. I used to get so pissed off when Kahn would laugh and point. then throw in a one liner, that stung after he beat your ass across the screen. It made me feel alive and full of MK badassness when you beat him. Also you thought to yourself it just took me x-amount of time to beat him with my best character how the hell am I going to beat him with my worst. DSB

this is the way that i see it.....

big bosses
+ very strong and powerful
+ very cheap
+ hard to knockdown,
- very slow and sluggish

sleek boss
+ very fast and quick
+ hightened reaction time
+ very good at countering and blocking
- not overly strong
- take normal damage

that is the pro's and con's of the two bosses, a good example of the two types would be goro and smoke( i count him as a boss in MK 2, cause you had to beat him if unlock the battle to go on)

there is a happy medium some where but i can't find it
