The August issue Electronic Gaming Monthly, which I just got yesterday because I'm a subscriber (for some reason) has the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP on the cover. Anyhow, in EGM's Opinionated Guide to What's Next, which starts on page 62-63 you'll find MK:D. Now, most of these opinionated previews are small blurbs, and this one is no different.
Now there's a little old school style character next to every game. Looks like he's from an old atari shooter but I can't remember. He has four faces. One for fantastic, one for good, one for so-so, and one for bad.
MK:D got the third one, which was a little guy with no smile and a bunch of "zzz's" over his head.
The article is short, and the one picture shown of Ben and Ermac is old. The article says "The Basics: The flesh-flaying corpse-dismembering fighting game is back with a couple of new modes, including a cheap Puzzle Fighter rip-off and a chesslike game where you fight out the conflicts MK-style. How Was it? These sluggish warriors need a little more spring in their steps to make the hemoglobin-spilling combat more exciting. The puttle game didn't do jack for me, but I really like the chess mode. It's a completely fresh idea that works well here--after you try it, you won't want to go back to boring ol' versus mode for any fighting game." -Shoe.
That's it.
So it looks like those who feared the game would be too slow can now share that fear with many more other people. Perhaps it's early though, as many other games including Goldeneye2, Dead to Rights 2, Ace Combat 5, Jak 3, and Conker all got a so-so rating.
Still, it's not surprising to see EGM, the Mag that has covered MK:D the least, giving it a poor preview. I swear they've got something against this series.
PS: To the Mods, if I'm not allowed to print the article (though I'm not sure why I wouldn't be able to, I gave credit do EGM) just let me know and I'll edit it out of my post.

They just hate Midway after Game Informer got the first impressions on MK:DA when they were supposed to. Don't worry about EGM, no one has respect for those potheads.

Yupp i got that issue yesterday also i cant believe they gave MKD a "zzz" but EGM has no info. about MKD ever so i mite switch to game informer
You guys are giving EGM a hard time. Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe they're right? Deadly Alliance, Special Forces, and Mythologies proved that the MK team can mess up once and awhile. And the puzzle game is a rip off, no denying it. Besides, it dosen't matter if some magazine didn't like MKD, all that matters is that we do. Don't let it get to you that ONE game magazine isn't kissing Boon's ass.

I like egm because they are the only ones to tell the truth about a game before it comes out. they wil criticize what needs to be criticized and they dont praise it just because its a cover story. they complained about driv3r being to short in the preview, and in the review same thing. it was because of the preview i didnt buy it and looking at reviews im glad i didnt. if they say the fighting was sluggish then its probably true for right now and midway needs to work on it. just because a magazine bashes a game you like doesnt mean "they hate that series and have always gave it bad reviews", they, just like me, want to see a REAL improvment. at least theres dead or alive ultimate to fill my online fighting needs, and according to them, its turning out good (also cant wait for MGS3:snake eater, burnout 3, devil may cry 3,God of war, and the best of all, Halo 2)

PSM2 (well, the british version) does the exact same, no-one else gave the last Lara Croft game what it deserved (55%) and Devil May Cry 2 70%.
Also on the DVD you can listen to the people who make the magazine themselves and they will tell you why the games are good or bad.
My favourite mag

suffer for a bad rating? well why dont they just give every thing a good rating then. ITS THERE JOB TO TRUTHFULLY REVIEW SOMETHING. jsut like EVERY game magazine. would you buy a magazine that gives everything a rating you want, cause that would be pointless. its called a opinion, everybody has one and EGM gives theirs just like you give yours. why dont you just start a magazine and give every MK that comes out a 10 if you hate EGMs opinion so much
EGM is like a gamers they have different taste like gamers do, they giving their impression on MKD as other magazine are. Some like Gamepro magazine has Mortal Kombat on it cover like eleven time and they give what they think need to be fix when they play the preview of the game.

egm sucks. bottom line, theyre still pissed at midway over the mkda thing. not only that, mk is one of the greatest games of all time, and egm has always treated it like shit.
its official..those guys are on crack. sluggish my ass. mkd is faster than mkda.
every game mag and game site has been impressed and had something positive to say about mkd thus far. it won 3 awards at e3...but, egms still eating those sour grapes.
did anyone read some of their reviews for mkda????they said it was the same old mk blah blah blah. that goes to show you that the person that said this didnt even play the game. every other mag besides egm game mkda good scores..and if mkda got good scores, mkd will surly do way better.
and for the few of you who actually think egm is being honest, must be smoking the same thing they are. that mag is completly biased. the mkda review proved that.

EGM can perform degrading sexual acts on me, then go to hell. Ever since they gave Dragon Ball GT: FInal Bout and Star Wars: Masters Of Teras Kasi fair reviews, I've placed their opinions where they belong: lining the bottom of my friend's birdcage.

I use to be one to defend EGM, however, I've seen they do indeed hold grudges and act "elitist" at times. I think the fact that MK:D was running slow is one of the two.
1) Early build, and will be fixed by October.
2) EGM being immature about the MK:DA issue.

EGM does that to games all the time. Basically, the entire crew at EGM is nothing more than a bunch of fanboys for one PARTICULAR game of a genre (or have NO idea what they're talking about), and say everything else sucks besides it. They don't do anything right. They're like the Gamespot of gaming magazines.
If you want a decent gaming mag, get GamePro. Its been around twice as long as EGM, and a much better view of games as a whole.

I smoke nothing, but i agree with EGM. i like there opinions and agree most of the time. i hate to say this but one reviewer gave MKDA a good rating, so shut up just because it didnt straight 9s and 10s. EGM liked MK 1,2, and even 3 but then fighting games changed and MK didnt. after playing tekken 3 how can you give MK 4 a good rating. and after playing soul calibur how can you give MK gold a good rating. finally, VF4, DOA, and Soul Calibur 2 are fun and deep fighting games, mkDa was bland so it deserved the rating it got compared to others. and they said they liked the chess game, so if MK made other improvments they would like those too. yes it is early, but if it has problems then you should point them out. ill say this again, just because you dont agree with them doesnt mean there idiots or biased. It means you think every body should agree with you and you dont want to think anything is wrong with MK(which there is). now if you like the way mk is going, fine. but most fighting game players prefer deeper fighting games (which is why im renting this first) especially if you want a competition online (and not just who can memorize the longest combos).

they said the puzzle game sucked and the game was still sluggish... basically they are reviewing a game 4 months before it comes out... big deal.
Actually MK:DA got an average score from EGM, they didn't just blast it as many of you seem to believe. They gave an opinion, and if yours differs that's fine, they never said they were the final word on all video games. You say they were biased in their review, but even some longtime MK fans(including a good number that post here) weren't high on DA. I've been a fan since MK1, and I thought I would always love the games unconditionally, but even I didn't actually buy DA untill just last January. The only reason I bought it then was because it was $10. My point is that we all have different views, so don't say that the one mag that didn't feed Ed Boon's ego is biased. Maybe they just didn't like the game.

Sorry, triple post.
Sorry, triple post.
My only concern is the speed. I'm hoping that the version they got was not near the final product version that we will get. Cause I was hoping for this game to be faster then DA cause Boon said it would be, so I expect it to be.
Oh I hope it gets faster.

Wow, some people really have problems.
Sonof100Maniacs is obviously going to defend EGM until the end of time, just ignore him.
As for others talking about EGM being gamers with different "tastes", you need to understand something. If you are going to be a successful gaming review magazine, you can't only like certain types of games. If you don't like fighting games, you don't preview MKD and give it something bad. You pass it on to someone else working with you who will give it a fair review based on how good it actually IS, and treat it like other games in terms of fairness. You can discriminate against one type of game if you want to, but you CAN'T do it if you expect people to respect your opinions, ESPECIALLY being a big gaming magazine. *Most* people out there will give ALL games reviews based on how good they actually ARE and NOT how much you love racing games and hate fighting games.
EGM blows my ass, enough said. They obviously don't know what it is like to be fair and just. And, if you don't like MK games, you SHOULDN'T be posting on these forums. I will say that over and over again.
Go to IGN, they are always fair and they know what they are talking about. Game Informer is so-so.

I dont know why ANY of you guys are surprised..
EGM has never liked Mortal Kombat after part 2, and has always had something negative to say about it.
But for some reason, no matter how garbage a TEKKEN sequel is, it seems to get decent scores...

If baraka407 is indeed quoting the review of the magazine, the words chosen by that reviewer hardly sound professional. I don't subscribe to game magazines (any more), but by the language used, I can tell there are better mags out there.
I am going to buy the game anyway, because I want to play the game.... anyway I don't know why people don't like the puzzle game I think it would be cool b/c in MKDA after you finish with Konquest, unlocking Koffins, and Arcade there was nothing to do... except play with your friends. So at least in MKD you can switch from chess, puzzle, to VS, so it would have a lot of different things. but this is just my opinion though.
