Sonya Vs Kano:

Why? A number of reasons. One is that it's one of the longest running rivalries in the series and is one that just instantly comes to mind when you hear the term. A young, tough as nails warrior hunting down a criminal thug for reasons only known to herself. Both characters are unique and many great traits for likeable characters. Sonya is heroic, loyal but cautious when trusting others. Kano is a self-serving asshole who you just wanna slap. The rivalry pretty much died when Kano was defeated by Sonya in MK3. Sonya, as far as we know has no idea that Kano is even alive. She's had no interaction with him, unless Kitana told her but I doubt she had a chance to with the war against Kahn and then the DA.
Fans of either character or not, Sonya is the one who is most likely to win this battle. She is the one who deserves it more out of the two characters. She defeated him once but Motaro helped him elude death. Since then Sonya wiped out the other members of the Old Black Dragon, joined the OIA and fought against other threats and ultimatley fighting the Deadly Alliance. Sonya and her allies died. That's canon. What happened to Kano after DA is unkown. We'll find out shortly. Sonya should kill Kano in Armageddon. It's only right, Kano's a really great character but his time is up, his usefullness is finished along with the other Black Dragon members. A new rivalry should emerge from the ashes of this one, only against Red Dragon members Mavado, Sonya's most dangerous opponent (according to MKDA), Hus Hao, Jax's murderer (I can dream can't I, and the newly recruited Kira.

I have a question. Would Raiden vs. Onaga be considered a rivalry? if it is, then it would be my fav.

If not, then probaly Raiden vs.Shinnok, or possibly Sub-zero vs. Scorpion.

For me:
1. Sub Zero vs. Frost: Classic master vs. student

2. Scorpion vs. Original Sub Zero (Noob Saibot): First Sub kills Scorpion, then Scorpion kills Sub. THEN, Scorpion promises not to hurt his younger brother

3. Sonya vs. Kano: Sonya is a strong woman and Kano is a strong man. Can't get any better than that.

4. Cyrax vs. Cage: Pretty funny. Cyrax felt he was robbed of eight dollars when he saw Cage's flick "Ninja Mime". Not really a rivalry, just really funny.

5. Liu Kang vs. Shang Tsung: This has been around since MK1. It's even further explored in the Armageddon opening movie, with a great fight scene.

6. Raiden vs. Shujinko: Raiden get really upset at Shujinko for awakening Onaga, and then Raiden turns all evil because of it. He even abandons his duty of Earthrealm protector.

7. Noob Saibot vs. Sub Zero: First introduced in MKD: Noob's ending. Older brother vs. Younger Brother. What more can i say.

~ Sonya Vs. Kano ~

One of the oldest rivalries of MK, evident even before the start of MK 1. There's really no other like it: like stated before, we have enemies of opposite genders, which is very unlikely in fighting games. Not only that, but it is a rivalry where the female is the superior, again, making it even more unique. Although, like Keith stated, it has been forgotten since Sonya "killed" Kano in MK3, I can definately seeing it being ignited once again in MK:A, where Sonya will definately kick Kano's ass once and for all. Two complete opposite characters in every way possible who hate each other's guts in a way that goes beyond "tasks, assignments, or just rival clans".

~ Mileena Vs. Kitana ~

What makes this one of my favorites is the complexity of it. It's not a rivlary where you cheer for the good guy and hate the bad guy's guts. You can actually understand Mileena and her motives, and maybe even be on her side (I know I'd hate to see her get taken out for good). She is driven by jealousy, and although (I believe) she could easily make a truce with Kitana once and for all, she refuses to submit herself to that, and has a drive unlike most other MK characters do.

~ Scorpion Vs. Quan Chi ~

A bad-ass warrior against one of the most evil villains to ever make themselves known in MK. I think the MK team made a very good move pairing these two guys together. There is no "good guy" in this rivalry, and although it's driven by nothing more than revenge, it's got such such unique and interesting characters that you forget all about it, and I personally can't wait to see these two confront each other once again.

Sonya Vs. Frost

Ever since Sonya was first introduced as Frost's only enemy in MK:DA, I've been interested in their rivalry. Although it is very new, I think it has a lot of potential just because of the two characters involved. Sonya is, like I stated before, one of the most bad-ass females in MK: although she is on the side of the "heroes", she has a distinct way of serving her own interests no matter what secondary task she is assigned to, making her unique among most of her "bland" allies (ahemliukangahem). Frost, although basically a female Sub-Zero, makes an interesting villain just because she started out as a good guy, and looks like she belongs as an ally of Sub-Zero: the irony in her storyline makes her a worthy character. Having these two clash is very intriguing, even though the exact reason of their rivalry is unknown. MK:DA's Storyline states that Frost just hates anyone who she believes is superior to her, and that she believes Sonya thinks she's prettier o_o' ... but I think there's a lot more to it that either exists and is unknown or can be added in the future, hopefully next-gen.

There's my breakdown. There's a lot more interesting rivalries (Shao Khan vs. Onaga, for example), but the ones above would are definately the most interesting ones and the ones that have got the most potential in my opinion.

* Kitana VS Mileena: Awesome and deep.
* Shang Tsung VS Liu Kang: Classic
* Johnny Cage VS Goro: If done, it would be awesome. Calssic nostalgia.
