I recently acquired MK:A last week.. and I am having trouble learning the combos effectively.

Do you press the keys simultaneously or after the character successfully hits his opponent?

pretty much a steady key hit for combos especially if no air is included.
If a popup is involved then you have to time it a little bit and start pressing the button when they start falling. Most of it is just timing. Start with 4 hit combos and work your way up. Try starting with Noob.
Also, are you on PS or Xbox?

PS2.

Why noob? He is the easiest to learn the keys effectively on?

I am coming from a PC user all my life.. PS2 is my first gaming console.smile

Thanks.

Cool cool. I am on Xbox 360. I play MKA and thats about it. I play Command & Conquer 3 on PC and thats it.
Yes, use Noob as his combos are pretty easy and pretty consistent. Also, Noob deals out some nice damage. Start with 3 and 4 hit combos and work your way up. Noob has a nice 50%er thats fairly easy offline.

Thanks.

I'll try him for a bit and see how it goes.

Ok.. so, I try some combos in practice.. work decent.

When I try em in arcade... it doesn't go so well. Why? Because a lot of the combos I try don't use a forward motion but a 'standing motion', as a "Forward + Square" has a different outcome than a "tanding + square", rendering my combo incomplete.

How do you get past that?

I don't quite understand what you are going through with this problem. Now it is about timing when you should attack the person whether you have to move forward or not. Try holding UP and execute your combos.
UP = auto-tracks

In other words.

A "forward + square" is very different than just a "square" when pushed.

And in combat, you are constantly moving (or your opponent is), so you generally don't have time to "stand and punch".

I'll try the "up" however and see what that does.

Use some defense then attack. Try to sidestep double tap UPUP or DownDown then attack which is called a counter. Also try to simply block or parry then attack right away aka counter. Taven can also be a good charatcer to practice with. What is your highest combo hit so far?

The most combos so far (in combat) is between 2 and 3.

Just curious, how about you?

Do you mean a 2 hit or 3 hit combo?
I could easily do a legit 10-15hit combo offline.

2 or 3 hit combos. Anything past that doesn't work in kombat... in practice I can get higher.

2 or 3 hits is so rediculously easy dude. Sucks man but it sounds like this game is just not for you. You should not have any problems at all doing a 6-8hit combo especially on Medium vs the first 3 fighters. :(

I can answer this, I hope.

Since you're a PC gamer, I can infer that you've played Counter-Strike or something like it. Know how the AWP always hits its mark when you stand still, so you let off the strafe for a split second? Do that. Let go of all directions just before starting the combo (provided you're in range) and you should get the desired result.

Also: Rain is another good choice to start doing combos with. I've always had an easy time with his.

I wish you would come to PS2 Version. I feel im a stronger player with a Sony Controller. I know it's about skill, but the controller's d-pad on xbox, ruins alot of my specials i attempt. For example, with X360's d-pad, when i try to do an Ermac lift2x i end up doing a wack punch, and then get parried. 1 Day though, i hope to play you on a PS3 or sumn, to show you, im a stronger player then what i portray on xbox.

That's exactly how it was for me playing Deception. I had such a hard time on the XBOX that I just stopped playing.

Actually, here's something for the original poster to do... I wrote a Rain guide over a year ago, and while it's dated, I'm sure it'll help you out.

It can be found here.

You are right man. The dpad on the 360 is horrible. The best controller is a ps2/ps3 controller. You can perform moves much easier.

Two questions;

Whats the purpose of the 'change style' at the end of the combo? I see some and it doesn't make sense?

Second, I see combo videos with block being pushed during the combo. Any reason y? Does it reset your stance or somethin?

Well, if it's a branch combo(meaning dial combo that ends with L being the switch style button that still hits) then that's the use of the combo.

What's not to make sense?confused

Perhaps you can elaborate more on your question.

What do you mean with block being punished? Do you mean someones blocking and taking chip damage? That's normal in all fighting games.

If you mean someones blocking and then getting hit, that means the person blocking is releasing block at the wrong time...most likely too early..

The trick is to block, then attack once you see an opening(counter well)

I see what you are asking. If you watched Check's videos he does what is called a Parry Cancel in the combos. Extremely hard to pull off and even harder to master as he did. Lol just don't worry about the parry cancel stuff. You don't need to press the block button at all when you are attacking.

How are you doing now?
