Thew new controls sucks big time. I still prefer the old style low punch, high punch, low kick and high kick. This would have been a perrfect game, only the controls sucks. I even had more fun playing MKII & MK3 on Midway Treasure 2. I wish Midway would release an arcade online version (Xbox Live arcade) of this 2 game. $10 each with one on one online play is awesome.

What are you talking about? This isn't a 2D Mortal Kombat. All the styles have low and high kicks their just not all the same button. Its really not complicated...
I agree.
Yeah, there are high and low attacks, and no SHIT this isn't 2D MK.
But K.I.S.S..... Keep it simple stupid....
Not every one, even new comers, want to learn 2,000 different moves. It's more annoying than it is innovative.
Face it, MKD doesn't feel like the MK we use to play. Yeah yeah... we all know you have to move on, but keep at least the controls the same. Back towards for a spear now when it was back back for years and years?? Gimmie a break.

if you want simple stuff go play Nintendo crap, how bout some auto target metroid prime, or super smash brothers with a whole 2 attack buttons.

^There is MUCH more involved than two attack buttons in SuperSmash.. I won't get started..
I would agree with low and high punch etc. if they were all different for each character and used with directional properties etc. instead of the mixed up way it is now with buttons (only). But whatever.. it has classical sweeps and uppercuts, what more do you really need?

I totally agree, the "new" controls SUCK!!!
And why did they change the controls for spear and stuff???
MK II & 3 are REALLY more fun to play, and I have to mention:
The "new / improved? / evolutionary" gameplay really disapointed me!!!
And i can hardly understand how some guys say: "MK has improved" or "MK had an evolution, go with the time"
Well, I ́m a MK player since day one and "the new MK" isn ́t MK anymore, to me...
Imagine the same game with different looking characters and another name: U wouldn ́t even give it a try!!!
So don ́t keep posting how amazing this game is just because there ́s Mortal Kombat written on the box.
This is no flame, just posting my opinion
P.S. I ́ll go and buy MK:D, coz I still love MK (not loving what it has become)

I vote....No.
The old style probably wouldn't work now because it would force them into a certain mold. A kick would HAVE to be high to be maped to the high kick. With all the styles it would be hard to force them into following any flat standard and therefore kill alot of the differences between characters. That was a big problem with MK4. Eveyone was the same.
The old controls have been around forever. Give the new ones some time. I didn't have any trouble adjusting. You just have to give up the idea that eveyone is going to work the same way. Embrace thier differences.

Do you wanna know the PERFECT solution??
Imagine MK with the fighting engine of Dead or Alive or Soul Calibur!!!
THIS would really rock!!!
Who needs different stances and styles?? noone does!!!
I pray for a Mortal Kombat like this!!! Coz this would really be evolutionary in MK!! And also other former non MK players would join us

yeah lets go back to the old controls so we can get another mk4, everybody knows how good that one was (this message board needs a smiley icon with rolling eye's, cause this is where i would put one of those). the only reason mortal kombat is starting to not feel like mortal kombat is because it is becoming less dark (characters look too strong (only jax use to be the really strong one), blood effects are stupid (bloodrayne 2 has awsome blood effects), and fatalities and certain characters are becoming crappier), not because the controls changed. i think this game isnt deep enough, the last thing it should do is regress.

I don't want another Soul Cal or DOA. We already have those games. MK was always different. That was the point. It had an actual story to it and was more fun and flash than hard core fighting.
Back when MK came out I thought it sucked. MK2 had enough "COOL" factor to keep me interected but I never liked the gameplay much. I do like it all now. I think its a great balace of depth and fun. Not Too much depth just the right amout for what MK should be. As time goes on I'm sure they can work this and that into it to refine everything more. The Break system needs some retooling for sure.
Mostly I would have to agree with it being a mood shift thats the only real problem. There seams to be this camp factor that is working its way into the game. Ying Yang Island, Bo' Rai Cho, and Kobra for example.

I agree. DOA is way too button-mashing for my tastes. That and Mortal Kombat will always have a special kind of mood about it.

Midway wanted to keep MK alive, and able to compete with games like DOA, SC, VF, Tekken, etc. That couldn't happen with the old fighting system. The old system is just too simplistic.
Also, look at it from an artistic perspective: a good painter doesn't keep his style or his subjects unchanged; he develops new techniques, and has new, creative ideas. A good band doesn't release the same album over and over again; the band members improve their skills and experiment with new directions in song writing. It's the same thing with MK. They can't just release the same game over and over again. They develop the storyline, and make new characters and stages, but that doesn't mean they should let the gameplay stagnate. From MK1-4, they added new nuances: faster movement, the Run button, the MK3 combo system, etc. When MKDA was made, the MK team felt the high punch, low punch, etc. system couldn't make the transition into a marketably viable game. Some people hate the new system, some people love it. But you can't please everyone. Like it or not, the old system is history.

I don't like the new controls at all. In fact, they're why MKDA is my least favorite game in the series. The old system was far more fun to play. I think they should either have given us the option to use the old system under the game play options, or given each person a fourth style that's based on the old system. Call it "Klassic" or something like that.
"Imagine MK with the fighting engine of Dead or Alive or Soul Calibur!!! "
Exaclty! Those games are more fun to play than the new MKs (MK:DA & MK:D)
Non-Japanese developer that makes fighting games sucks. Only the japs really knows how to create good fighting games. They should abandon the current controlls and use the old one.

I like the old controls much better as well.
I don't like the addition of combos or weapons either actually.
Simple uppercut and roundhouse kicks were the best, but...it had to change.
I'm an old skool MK'er but times are changing. The game must move on. It's the 3D world now and MK needs to stay up with it's competitors out there. New things are required to keep everyone entertained.
It also requires alot more skill & dexterity to master these new functions.

I think they should have
one button combos.One button
kills an all.Then it would be
some what okay.

I think the controlls are pretty much Kig/low Kick/punch.... especially in Deception (against DA...) Only sometimes the button corrisponding to what punch/kick changes depending on character/style...

The old controls would hold them back too much for what they are trying to do with the game.
The new system gives them the freedom they need to have the many different styles work well.
The reason for changing Scorpions spear toss command is simple.
You tap b,b to do a back dash. So if you tap b,b+1 the back dash would cause a problem because it might come out on accident instead of the spear. +1 solves that problem.
But here is the thing. The new system while it could be very intricate and complex, is still simple enough so that they could still make use of the old style.
Why?
The lack of attacks.
You have like 2 or 3 attacks per button.
If you had around 7 to 9 attacks per button, then the old controls would be holding them back too much.
I'll make an example of a new fighter in MKD with the old controls.
HP and HK could have the High and Med attacks.
LP and LK could have the Low and Med attacks.
Hotaru example using the Ba Shan Fan style.
Click the image
Another thing to think about is that if they did use the old style controls and they keep the limited style MKD combos. Like a lot of the characters combos are all high and med hits.
If they use the old style, you would end up with more 1 button combos.
That's not really bad though.
For exemple Hotarus juggle combos would look like this.
MKD= 2,1,L,.....2,2,1
Old = 1,1,L,....1,1,1
MKD= 2,1,L,.....2,2,u+1
Old = 1,1,L,....1,1,u+1
MKD= 2,1,L,....d+1,...>>+4
OLD= 1,1,L,....d+3,...>>+2

Yea Soul Caliburs Engine sucks. Its basically button mashing, and the bigger the weapons the better.(Maxi can never last against Kilik) Once you hit a guy to the ground you just keep hitting him til he dies because he cant get back up because you're hitting them everytime they try to stand up.
Dead or Alive is ok, but the people who make it obviously can't get a woman. Every woman in that game have big breasts and fight half naked. Thats way to distracting in a fighting game. Other than that, the game is pretty good.
MK is cool because you have 2 real martial arts styles and a weapon style, although the weapons usually appear out of no where.(I don't get why Scorpion has 2 swords, but only uses 1) Its all good though.

There are HP,LP,HK,LK attacks in Deception, its just not as simple as they were in past MK games. You just don't press a button to do so. One example for the most part a low sweap attack like like down + button 4. Not that complex but not just pressing a simple 1 button.

Have you seen Li mei in MKDA and Mileena in MKD?
They show more than the girls in DOA.
MK does the same thing.
Now as for not being able to stand up in SC2.....
The game doesn't suck it's the player. It's very easy to do tec. rolls and get out of harms way in SC2.
Just tap Block when you land, or hold the D. Pad to roll when you land.
Of course you can be hit while on the ground, that's why you are able to hit a floored opponent in the first place. But it's still easy to defend against that.

Exactly! We want an MK game, not a Tekken like game. MKDA, and MKD did loose a lot of fans where I come from. MKDA killed most of them. MKD brought a few back including myself. However, when the CPU in trainning is asking for you to deliver four low attacks, you immediatle think the two lower buttons where LP, and LK once were. But now, some low attacks, are in the uppper buttons too. Sure it is cool to see different styles of martial arts, but like he said K.I.S.S. Changing the controls is what killed a lot of fans off of MK. I do like the new graphics, and gameplay. I hate the controls, even though I am used to them, and some of the finishers make no sence, or are plain stupid still, and some are the same thing! Even though we can complain, it takes real talent to make a game, and we have to at least appreciate the programmers who take their time to make them, even if they are not as good as the originals. Like in movies. Sequels barely pass the originals. But yeah, K.I.S.S.

Quit complaining. If they would have made MK: DA and MK: D like the old games, only die hard fans would have bought them. That control style is too old and outdateed--just look at Street Fighter--they have to resort to the vs. Marvel/vs. SNK series for anyone to be interested, and most still aren't. Get used to it--the old is out and the new is in, thank god. If you want the old style back, go play the old games. And if you remember well, MK3 and 4 nerely killed the series due to the terrible characters (3) and lack of change (4). That's just how it is. Go ahead and whine about it, it'll do you absolutely no good.

first of all, why does everybody here think soul calibur 2 is a button masher. is it because it doesnt use dial-a-combos that basically just takes memorization to master and uses instead a system that allows you to be more creative with your combos? first of all, the bigger weapon is not better, cause i can kick the ass of anybody who plays as nightmare when i use ivy, and maxi is fast enough to hold his own to a big guy. second, wow, soul calibur has a ground game that lets you choose when you want to get up, roll, attack while an opponent is down, and attack while getting up, something all 3d games should have. seriously, if you are being continually hit on the ground and lose because of it, then you just suck at the game.
dead or alive, while perverted (as is mortal kombat, bloodrayne 2, king of fighters, ninja gaiden and every other game that has at least one female character in it. face it, thats what happens when horny guys make games). is my personal favorite hand-to-hand fighting game. the combo system is awsome, and i like the way you can use the environment to help your attacks (like slamming somebody into a fucking tree). but yeah, the characters suck as does the "story".
and personally, id rather have one well thought out and balanced hand-to-hand style in mortal kombat as well as a well thought out and balanced weapon style.
