I think online play will be fine and all...but will it just be...enter room....challenge someone...fight...the end?
Or will there be more structure?
Either tournament style (32 people enter for example, one winner etc)
or quarter-turn, people enter a room and get in a line (or queue) and fight the winner and people play for winning streak

The only game that will be catering to different structures like tournament, player survival, tag, arcade deathmatch (where loser gets swapped), and 3 other modes with a lot of options (like spectators) will be Dead or Alive Ultimate Online currently. Also has ladder rankings.
MKD will have the create game and then challenge/accept for its Kombat Mode, Puzzle and Chess. No ladder rankings either.

Deception will have 4 modes of online play. Individual matches, tournaments, chess kombat, and puzzle kombat.

Nope, tournament modes + spectator modes will not be supported, Ed has already said this in his interview on gamespot. This is due to the fact that the team wanted all their modes (besides konquest) to go online and they didn't have time to implement it. They said they would in MK7 though.

Negative. Check the main site, under gameplay and look at Online. It says tournament.

I really do hope they will put in a tournament mode, but I doubt it mainly because the MKO staff has already thumbed through the menus for Kombat and they said it was arcade or versus, etc. and like the old MK Tourney modes, they appeared as part of the mode selection, who knows though.
They're probably referring to the eventuality player hosted tournament perhaps?
Do you know if they'll be doing rankings?

I remember watching that interview with Gamespot and Boon, it was right after E3. Well, from my understanding, the MKO staff didn't play the game online. I don't know how PS2 Online works, but with XBOX Live if you are signed in and connected you will see a menu that will have various things like create a game, quick game (connect to the first available game), optimatch (specify which game mode you want to search for and play), statistics, downloadable content, etc.
Now I think for Deception that we will see Create A Game (Kombat, Puzzle, Chess), Create A Tournament, Quick Match, Optimatch, and Statistics.
I'm pretty optimistic about all of this stuff, so it may or may not be as expansive. The reason why I think there will be a tournament, aside from it being confirmed on the main site, is that there will have to be a lobby system implemented in order to select your opponent. Now, if you had a lobby system, you could easily set up a King of the Mountain or tournament, with those in the lobby. We'll find out soon enough.

Hmmm.. how will users be able to communicate in a lobby without a keyboard for Xbox Live? Or is it just some kinda name list?

Well the lobby set up is a little different. You get a list of all the games that are currently running and you can join them. When you join the game you are brought to a lobby sort of thing. You use a headset, if you have one, to communicate with those who are also there. It's very simple to use.

Oh, so like an ingame list. Hmm.. I dunno, MKD going from we aren't allowing tournaments at E3 to we're going to have tournament modes with spectators, etc. seem iffy to me. But hey, maybe they tried to get it out hardcore once they saw the DoAU coverage saying that they'll have a billion modes that involve more than 2 people where you can spectate and cheer on, etc.
Yeah DMitch, that's what I thought too, but DoctorDrew pointed out to me that there was also a mention of "Tournaments" on the official website under game info.

And also that interview was back in May...and I don't think a tournament mode would be that hard to set up in 4 months.

There are three rules for doing scientific research. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.

Shit, I do hope there will be ladders :(. Although they may well be useless if the game is broken, it's still fun stuff.

Ladders would be so great. I mean, hell, I'd take anything that the MK Team will give me, but a tournament mode!?!?! Finally, and hopefully!!
