Does anyone like the idea of Kabal being from Texas? Should they make use of his origin for MKD?

The topic says it all, but Kabal being a Texan makes perfect sense in my mind. When I wrote dialogue for him, I always depicted him as a hardass with a deep voice and sarcastic edge, but with sort of a warm heart as well.

I don't know if the MK team even gave that much thought to his origin, but I can't imagine Kabal being from Rhode Island or Wisconsin(no offense to the nice peeps who live there).

But remember, they used Kano's Australian roots for Konquest, so maybe in MKD's version of Konquest, we may see an more in-depth view of his backround.

Being from Texas myself, I think it's a cool idea as long as he isn't wearing a cowboy hat and has a piece of chew in his mouth.

I completely agree. Just because I want him to be from Texas, doesn't mean I think he should be dressed in stereotypes.

Texas is not some remote desert or big prairie full of cowboys, there are a lot of kickers yeah, but there are a lot more 'gangstas' and preppy people and its really racially diverse half the population of the whole state is non white, alot of hispanics, a lot of blacks, and suprsiingly, a lot more asians nowadays too(infact in houston all the city phones now have lines in english, spanish, and vietnamese). Houston is kind of a shit hole but its diverse, Dallas isnt too bad, Austin, Austin is the bomb. It's relatively clean and not run down compared to the other big cities, its liberal, its a college town, its more cultured, its just nice.

I dont really like the idea.

Why Texas when there could be other more, like, interesting strange and almost forgotten countries?

Somewhere very far from the already ordinary common places.

It'd be nice if all the characters had their origins and backgrounds explored. The Earth warriors and those originating from Earth are best for this. Smoke being a Texan would be cool. Although exactly what would they have to gain in MK from his roots?

Mortal Kombat is predominantley eastern, with the exception of a few chracters, it is based on eastern mythology. I don't see kabal as texan, I always saw him as eastern.

I agree.

Kabal should never be northamerican. Same with smoke.

Its just not right! It does not fit their characters.

I can see Kabal being from somewhere exotic like India, or misterious such as Guyana, but not Texas.

Kabal was a crook who lived in the city, Alot of awsome criminals like in America, so Kabal should be American. No offense to any of the foreign countries.

Isn't Sonya from Texas? I seem to remember her profile in the SNES MK1 instruction booklet saying that.

(BTW, I only rented MK1 for SNES. I'm not buying it if it doesn't have the blood.)

Not a bad idea lol. Nightwolf is probably from Yellow Stone (Wyoming), Alberta or Saskatachewan.

Yeah, it said Sonya was from Texas.
When I read the suggestion that Kabal be from Texas, I just suddenly got this image of Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kabal being kind of like that and, I don't know, I think it works.

Yeah as a Texan from Dallas I could see a warrior such as Kabal being sprung from here, especailly since downtown Dallas and surrounding cities have a lot of crimes, it could be a perfect stage of how Kabal came into grips with the Black Dragon. And to the other poster, yes Sonya was from Austin Texas.

Just a thought; what if he was made into a non-stereotypical Canadian, or Mexican? I'm not saying that it'd be a bad idea if he was from Texas, but for the sake of variety, I think it'd be a good idea to have at least one character from North America who's not from the States.

That's a good idea. And how come all Earth warriors are from the United States, China or Japan. Howa bout a European warrior? Why not??

MK3 seemed to have alot of voice overs with a sort of "country twang" in them? I never really knew why with the "Ho-Hah-Hei" it's weird...? To me it doesn't matter where he's from, but if you want him to be from Texas, then fine with me...(what a whacko...?) lol

Cool. I am as well. smile

Tgrant: I guess his roots aren't necessary to develop MKD, but perhaps just to develop the interaction between different characters.

Everybody: I had no idea Sonya was from Texas. This is the first I've heard of it at least. Can anybody post some full confirmation of this?

Also, I think Kabal's origin could be Canadian. That sounds reasonable. But I think it would a stretch to say he's from anywhere outside N. America, and for him to be Eastern isn't even plausible. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with him being Eastern, but the special forces are an American unit, and I'm sure the Black Dragon is as well. Even though the Black Dragon recruits all nationalities, the odds of Kabal being anything other N. American are very slim. The only reason Kano was Australian was because they used some plot elements from the movie. But it's not impossible, I guess.

I always thought Kabal as more of an underground backalley type of person. With that being said, I'd say he'd be better off from Detroit or Chicago.

Yep. Our lovely Ms. Blade is from Austin, Tx. YEEEEEHAAAAAWW!!!!!!!!!!! lol. It has always made me giggle though, I just CANNOT imagine Sonya speaking with a southern accent...

-Sonya talking to Kano: "Alright' shugah, you're comin' with me and I ain't taking a no for an answer" LOL

About Kabal... Mmmmm I would never have guessed he was from Tx too. I don't know if it really fits him though...
